However, when judging the stories we read we should understand the different kinds of values it presents. Looking at “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty and “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, we can see that both works of literature bring a variety of things to the table. In this essay we will compare and contrast these works of literature and their relationships among the following elements: content, form, and style. In the poem “The Road Not Taken” (Frost, 1916) or the short story “A Worn Path” (Welty, 1941) the theme is similar. While one speaks of a “Path” the other of a “Road” the theme that each of these writings share is presented differently throughout each piece. “The Road Not Taken” (Frost, 1916) sets the poem with a man on a forest road on an autumn morning. There are many words that are used to describe the word journey but what does it really mean? Many people consider the word journey as merely a distance in which they have traveled or will eventually travel; often they fail to recognize that there can be great meaning beyond each step that is taken. Too often, people become more focused on the destination rather than the process that it takes to get them there. While focusing on destination people neglect to recognize the value of whole process that gets them there. A journey can bring forth exhilaration and excitement as well as agony and anguish. ...Thesis: The same path taken will not lead to the same destination This thesis is important to me. It is a commentary on our humanity and both our common and disparate journeys. In our collective sojourns not everyone will arrive at the same destination even though the same path was taken. Is this statement altruistic or naïve? I think this comment is about humanity at its best. Conformity is not an answer but a compromise. Mediocrity is another outcome of taking the same path with the expectation of arriving at the same destination. The same path will not lead to the same destination, and for one, I am thankful. While both stories have similar themes, they have different points of view; both show that life can change during the journey. In addition, both stories illustrate that things aren’t always as they seem. This paper will compare and contrast the two stories and how despite the different viewpoints, there is one thing in common; regardless of the journey a person takes, there are many obstacles and hurdles. Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” has been often interpreted with different meanings but is one of the most quoted poems of all time. Many interpretations of the poem believe it encourages individualism and self-reliance. There are others that believe it is not what the author intended. Upon closer examination we can determine that Frost’s intended message is that life choices are inevitable, a natural part of the life process, and that we cannot know whether the decision was the right one until we are in the future looking back at that particular moment in time, nor can we ever know what choosing the other path would have meant for our future.
