How do concrete and steel compare in the construction of large commercial buildings? Office buildings, Hotels, Sports Complexes, and other buildings have the purpose of bringing people inside. The goal is to keep occupants comfortable and safe, while keeping the cost associated withe the construction and maintenance of the building low. Both materials have advantages and disadvantages. However, when it comes right to it, the differences between the tow materials balance themselves out . There is no truly better building material.

There are many advantages in using steel as a building material. Steel is a very structurally stable material. It is also eco-friendly and energy efficient. construction steel is recyclable with the rates of over 90 perce there’s no need to worry about the material rotting or damages caused by insects. It is very durable and can withstand most weather conditions. There’s also no need for deforestation that are harmful to the environment. Steel frame compared to wood is stronger and sturdier. It is also lighter and flame resistant. With the advancement of technology, steel can be form and bend to the user’s need. Constructing steel is faster than most materials, thus making it more cost-effective.

Though steel contains many advantages, there will always be a few disadvantages along with it. Steel may be more resistant than wood, but it can also develop molding during the winter. Since steel also contain metal material, if not treated carefully it can be toxic to the environment as well. It may also have a tendency for corrosion and rust if not maintain correctly, thus it might not be as cost effective due to constant maintenance.

Concrete can handle the compression stresses 10 times more than the tension and the most of loads in our life is compression. and its better resistance to fire. also it is a britile material which gives the advantage to make a rigid structure. and it is easy to handle over specially now there is plants that give you ready mix concrete. But it is also weak in handling tension and concrete always needs another material to reinforce it against exssive shear.67

compare between concrete and steel advantages and disadvantegs : aesthetics steel is a very flexible material and it gives a very clean shapes but it is very hard to shape. concrete can cast to take shape required but aesthetically steel is better. sustainability concrete is the material of choice to resist severe exposure conditions without maintenance but it also cause environmental impact. Steel is the most recycle material in the world but it needs maintaining. Steel is ahead of concrete since its recyclable properties can be recovered, melted and use again by future generation in any type of application, and at the end this is what sustainability means; it is creating a balance between our present needs and the use of natural resources by limiting the environmental impact for our future generations.

Steel buildings have better strength and flexibility to protect in natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes. Stronger, more flexible steel buildings can withstand much of the pressure that topples traditional structures, and save lives in the process.
A collapsed concrete structure is often the cause of fatalities and injuries. Under high winds, a lightweight, tilt-up building roof can become compromised, adversely affecting its connection

to its concrete panels.

But, concrete can resist fire for extended lengths of time better than steel. Because of this, concrete structures are less likely to collapse in the event of a fire. Steel will both soften and melt when exposed to high temperatures for longer time periods. But builders can improve safety by using spray-on fireproofing spray to strengthen the steel.

For many years the foundation repair industry has primarily used concrete piers. While concrete is effective it does have it's short comings. The primary problem with concrete piers is the lack of depth. On average concrete piers are installed 6 to 10 feet and less in the summer months. To get the best results the piers need to be installed deeper. The advantage of a Steel Pier is 16 to 25 feet and sometimes deeper. The deeper the piers the better results can be expected.
The Steel Pier will support 10 times the weight of a concrete pressed piling and will not break under the weight of the load. The actual weight of the house can change due to weather conditions such as sleet and snow on the roof of the structure. The additional weight can undermine the concrete method.
The sole purpose of any foundation repair method is to re-support the foundation in the area of settlement. This support can only be effective if the support piers are installed below the weather effective zone. Only Steel Piers can achieve this because they are installed deeper than the other methods.

Often, depending on the design needs, buildings are built with both concrete and steel for the best possibilities. It is not uncommon for buildings to incorporate concrete tilt-up in their lower portion and steel in the upper.

A hybrid type building using steel column and roof system is a great way to go. A full tilt-up with open web joist is very technically difficult to build. It takes experience to form, pour and tilt the panels especially if they have openings for doors or windows. But with a pre-engineered metal building combined with a partial tilt-up system, even though the expertise is still needed to lift the panels, the panels have a weld point and together they complement each other.

These include the necessity for auxiliary steel reinforcement and the requirement for thick-sectioned members that are both aesthetically unappealing and consume significant quantities of aggregates. The aggregates are an increasingly scarce resource in many urban areas. An emerging technology with the potential to overcome these limitations is reactive powder concrete (RPC). RPC is a cold-cast cementitious material in which the mechanical properties of the composite matrix are improved by (i) suppression of the weak interfacial transition zone normally developed around the aggregate through improved particle packing and (ii) refinement of the hydrated paste microstructure by extensive use of pozzolanic silica and elevated temperature curing. Tensile capacity is provided by steel micro-fibres rather than conventional reinforcement. The result is a material with the potential for flexural strength up to 50 MPa and ductility and energy absorption values approaching those of steel.
