I have been asked to write an essay on the similarities and the differences the between Soccer and Football. If on the surface, you were to just to say football and then say soccer to someone. Then ask them the similarities they probably would say there are none except that are both sports. In actuality there are both differences and similarities in the two sports. In the following paragraphs below we will discuss both the similarities and differences of the two sports. We will start off by discussing the players themselves. Both sports allow a total of eleven player’s maximum, on the field at one time during play. Also, each player has a particular job to do on the field that they are responsible for. Substitutions in players is where the differences lie, in football they are allowed unlimited number of substitution during a game. Where as in soccer they are restricted to three per game normally, but if it a game for fun or just recreation the limited can be raised to 6 per game. Another interesting point where there are noted similarities and differences between the two sports are, the use of the hands and the feet. Both “Football and soccer players use their hands differently to improve performance.”(Hoefs, 2011). Where football players use their hands to carry the ball and to pass the ball, where as soccer players use their feet to pass to advance with the ball and to pass it. They only time hands are in use on the soccer field is either by the goal keeper or a player making a throw in when the ball has gone out of bounds. There are also technical likeness and well as differences in the sports when it comes down to the twos playing field. They are both played on natural or artifical turfs, but the difference is in the size of the fields. A football field measures 120 yards within this there are two, 10 yard in zones; with a width of 53 yards. Where as soccer field is 130 yards long and a width of 70 to 80 yards. With all the differences and the likeness in the two sports soccer and football their mission remains the same ultimately. “Players in soccer and football games rely on teamwork to move the ball toward their goal to score.”(Ellyn,n.d). Both sports have an offense and a defense as well as, having strategies to play the game. “Players pass balls to each other, try to keep the ball from opponents, and interfere with, or screen, opposing players to help teammates.”(Ellyn, n.d). In the above paragraphs you have been shown some of the basic differences as well as the basic similarities in the sports of soccer and football. These are just a few of them. In my personal opinion as one of the above quotes say it’s about the team work in both sports, it is a necessary element regardless if it’s soccer or football.
