It was happiness that made one smile, then.”- Anne Holm, author of I Am David. This is what David learns throughout the story, and this idea remains the same in both the movie and book. Although there were major similarities like this, there were many differences between the I Am David book and movie. Johannes, the painter, and King all played an important role in telling the differences between Anne Holm’s book and the movie based on it. Many differences between the movie and book lead to affecting the viewer’s enjoyment as well as the telling of the story. First of all, the cause of Johannes’ death was a major change to the existing elements of the story. In the book, David is told that Johannes had a heart attack. In the movie, David stole a bar of soap from them and Johannes took the blame. Johannes was shot then and there in front of David. This affects the viewer’s pleasure greatly because it makes the audience depressed and sad for David. It affects the telling of the story because it makes the scene in the house different because David has second thoughts and unpleasant memories about the soap while taking a bath. Although many modifications to the movie, the story of I Am David is a heartwarming book and film about the Holocaust through the tale of a
