Despereaux is different from the other mice in a lot of different ways. Some examples would include: reading not eating books, he didn't learn to scurry like the other mice, and even the way he looks is different: small body, huge ears, and big eyes. Also because Despereaux was so different he like fairy tales about princess and knights which taught hum traits such as chivalry and courage even though his causes him to be ostracized by his elders. This effects the story because Despereaux has an archetype of what kind of mouse he wants to be. He then goes on to be the knight and falls in love with the princess.
The four books are stories of each character. The first book is about Despereaux’s sad love story with Princess Pea. The second introduces Chiaroscuro, also known as, Roscuro different from the pack; loves the light which is how he ends up in the castle and the queen’s soup. The third book is Miggery Sow’s sad story of her dream of wearing Princess Pea’s crown. The fourth book is the connection of all of there lives.
The human world is the kitchen and the castle. They also represent two distinct settings: the upstairs of the castle where the light pours throughout and the dungeon where is always dark. Throughout the novel characters are people who are forced into the dungeon first Despereaux and then Pea who was kidnapped by Roscuro. But it also serves as as a vehicle for strive to reach the world of light which could metaphorically mean reaching for life and hope. Even Roscuro is bossed with light and even though he lives in the dark; he tries to escape to the world of light upstairs, but is sadly forced back downstairs.
