Grendel’s blessing and curse
Grendel’s last words can be seen as either a blessing or a curse depending on the reader’s perception of the book. Throughout the whole novel Grendel goes through many realizations in his life, in the beginning Grendel seeked out for answers, that maybe he can find out who or what he really is. Grendel throughout his life has labeled himself as a loner because he had no one to conversate with. His shadow alone was his only friend. I believe that Grendel is giving them a blessing. When I first read the line "So may you all", I assumed that he was cursing the animals because moments before he describes them as "evil, incredibly stupid, enjoying [his] destruction" (Gardner 174).
