Compare the ways in which Blake and Heaney write about loss in their poemsBoth poets write about loss in different ways varying from physical loss e.g. in Chimney Sweeper, the little boy physically loses his mother to death; to mental/emotional loss e.g. in Death of a Naturalist, Heaney loses interest/curiosity in nature/natural happenings. The two poems also variate slightly in structure, syntax, imagery etc. which, as said before, allow us to interpret the poet’s contrasting views on loss. On the first line of stanza one, Blake writes “When my mother died I was very young…” We are able to see that Blake has used a plosive because of the hard consonants “d” from the past tense verb “died” to emphasise the massive loss of a maternal figure that the young boy has had to endure. We are now able to understand that Blake used this type of lexis to draw emotion out of us, even though it is the first line. It is fair to suggest that the young boy has experienced the loss of innocence, due to his mother dying and leaving him to grow up without a nurturing guide. Similarly, on the first line of stanza one, Heaney writes “All year the flax-dam festered…” We are able to see that Heaney has used alliteration and a plosive from the words “flax-dam” and “festered”. This is shown by the hard consonants “f”, “d” and “f”, Blake has allowed us to visualise a graphic image of a rotting flower swamp, however, because of Heaney’s curiosity he blind to the horrible sight and smell of the flax-dam. We can see that by this quote, Heaney has not at this part of the poem, suffered any sort of loss of innocence, and so experience hasn’t taken over yet.On the third line of stanza two, Blake writes “Hush Tom never mind it…” We are able to see that Blake used direct speech between the two boys, to shows us that even though the speaker is going through the same situation; he has taken on the
