Comparing the love story of “All that heavan Allows” (Der Blaue Engel) 1930 and
"Angst Essen Seele auf" (Ali: Fear eats the Soul) 1974.

Introduction “All that heaven allows” and “Ali: eats the soul “ are both 20th century German movies. The scope of this paper will focus more on their love stories and how “mise-en-scene” is used in the films, including shots, sound and relating the historically events at time the movies were made. In contrast “Ali: fear eats soul” is written and directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. It is referred as one of the biggest work masterpiece of Fassbinder in the new German cinema.[1] This film is based on discrimination against Guest works in Germany specially Moroccans. Though both are compelling in different ways, they hold more similarities than you may realize.

The love stories Both professor Rath and Ali met their loves ones in the bar. The high school cruel professor Rath finds out that some of his students hangout at night at blue angle the beer hall bar and were having fun with performing singer Lola. Before he saw, the students ran away and hide to a cellar underneath Lola dressing room. He converts Lola to stop turning his students to failures but with her beauty and decent personality the professor couldn’t resist and melt in her presence. Similarly Ali who hangs out at the bar with his immigrant works meet Emmi a cleaning lady in her mid fifties who come in to bar because of heavy rain and feeling loneliness in her apartment. Ali asks if he can dance with her they dance and have a good conversation, to her Surprise young Ali walks her home. She asks Ail to spends the night with her and she falls in love. Both Ali and Professor Rath begin affairs with age difference partners, which lead them to their marriage. The obstacles they both ignored comes to reality for Professor Rath who was very respected middle class man falls in love with Lola the performing singer in the beer hall. The next night the students and the professor met at bar, when they saw his behavior with Lola they lost the respect for him .In the next class the student draw him and wrote nasty messages on the blackboard. As he tries to clam the students he lost control of class and the school director intervenes and he finally gets fired. After Ali and Emmi made their weeding official everyone goes against them specially Emmi’s family, Neighbors’, and co-workers, when Emmi visits her children to introduce her new husband a guest worker they lost respect for her and walkout from the room. To clear their mind they decide to go on vocation. luckily by the time they return everyone try to be with peace with Emmi. After some time both ali and Professor Rath their relationship takes turn and things never becomes the same. Both of them movies have a tragic endings Ali falls on stage unconscious he was run to the hospital where there was a little chance of survival. The professor comes back to school and dies in the classroom. Some of the major difference about the two movies are, “the blue angle’s “ has international Hollywood director, its black and white, based on middle class professor. The movies was mostly shot in doors, the professors authoritarian can be related to the Nazi leader Hitler. While “Ali fear eats soul” is a new German cinema movie that is on color, the has more shots on outdoors, and based on a guest worker on this film one can relate the hatred against guest works to in Nazi period when German show a lot of hate to Jewish immigrants.

“Mise- en- scene” Shots , sounds and lighting .

The Produce of the movie blue angle Universum- Flim A.G (ufa) brought the Hollywood Director Josef Sternberg to German to create one of the sound film of its kind.[1] Although you can still recognize the traditional ufa expressionism its was very notable the sound film was a break through for the German cinema. the movie use the sound in different ways for example one can recognize direct sound, off-screen and ambient sound and example of ambient sound is on the scene where the professor Rath go to the blue angle for the first time you as he gets closer to bar you can here the background of the music and Lola singing. Later when he goes in side you can here the DirectSound in the bar. When it comes to lighting the blue angle is a black and white movie on the scene when he is coming out or going in the blue angle as he walks through the alleys you can see darkness and shadow. In the last scene when he leaves the blue angle you can see snow on the ground, which shows danger, and as he walks to school you can see shadow that means tragedy is about to happen. The professor Rath dress two different costumes in in the movie when he was a professor he wearing suit but when he his life style changed you saw him dressed as clown on the stage. The setting in the movie was mostly shot indoors except in the first opening scene where the lady is cleaning the mirror of the shop and the other scenes where the professor is walking to the blue angle bar On the other hand In the movie “Ali fear eats soul” is color movie that has a sound all in the opening scene you can recognize expressionism as Emmi walks in the bar and how the camera was shot which you can clear see a space between Emmi and the rest of the people in the bar. This film has a lot of shots that was filmed out doors for example the weeding scene and the other notable scene is when Ali walks home and leaves Emmi with here lady fiends. In this film the camera was shot on angle mostly on Ali for example on the first scene where ali is standing in the bar. Also on the other scene when they are coming back from vocation. the neighbor asks Emmi some help of moving staff you can see Ali stand on the stairs the camera only captures Ali on the angle. The last scene is when the doctor tells Emmi that there is a little hope of survival Emmi walks to Ali’s bed where he lies unconscious. The small window that is closed you can see the dark sky which also reflects that is a little hope as Emmi stairs the sky.

Historical The two movies have two different important events for example “the blue angle” is right after the World War II where there were still some and political and economic problems. Although the movie was based on the novel in early 20th century the film’s screen rewrites the ending of the story and changes the date from 1905 to 1925-29 the heyday of the Weimar Republic didn’t include any visible specific to the period. [1] Although you can relate the cruel behavior’s professor Rath to Nazi Hitler
For the “Ali eats the soul” Fassbinder the direct of the film not include the current events that are happening in Germany but also reelects German history. Form 1955 to 1973 the German economic was booming and a lot immigrants or guest workers come from east Europe and North Africa [1]. Around 1970s the changing ethnic background in Germany was visible thus this created a backlash against guest workers as notable in this film. This film can be related to the Nazi period on how they treated Jewish immigrants
