Webster Dictionary defines an odyssey as a series of experiences that give knowledge or understanding to someone. Both O' Brother Where Art Thou?and Homer's Odyssey have characters who go on epic journeys in a search for their home. With help from their friends, both characters make the perilous journey home, but not without costs. Both heroes must face many villains and challenges along the way. Although Everett and Odysseus have their differences, both are just men who want to return to their families.

In both O’ Brother Where Art Thou and The Odyssey, Everett and Odysseus would not have been able to return home safely if they did not have their allies to support them. In O’ Brother Where Art Thou, Everett needed to get back to his wife Penny before she remarried. He knew he would not have be able to escape prison alone, so he told Pete and Delmar there was a treasure so they would agree to escape with him. Even after Pete and Delmar learned Everett was lying, they still continue to help him get back home to his wife. They put themselves at risk of going back to prison so they could help their friend. In the Odyssey, when Odysseus is getting ready to kill Penelope’s suitors, Telemachus and the loyal swine herders help him fight. Telemachus even offers to go and fetch weapons for Odysseus. “Father let me bring you a shield and spear...I’ll give outfits to Eumaeus and his cowherd. Better to have equipment” (Feldman et al 1506-1510). Telemachus and the other men who help Odysseus fight care about him enough that they offer up their lives so Odysseus can reclaim his home.
