For many years, authors like H.G Wells and Jules Verne have blown readers away with their creative predictions of the future. Science fiction is a genre that includes fictional books about technology and science in a future setting. Popular science fiction novels are 2,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Hunger Games, and The War of the Worlds. But science fiction is also seen in short stories."Old Glory" is a dystopian short story about a future United States. Unlike in The Hunger Games, the narrator does not feel like the setting is dystopian. In the future United States, people cannot say anything they want. If they speak out, they are killed. First, in "Harrison Bergeron" , there are greater examples of how technology controls people. The handicaps are worn by almost everyone in "Harrison Bergeron" , but in"Old Glory" only people who speak out against the government are affected by the new laser weapons. Also, "Harrison Bergeron" does a better job displaying the new ideas effect on people. In Old Glory, most people love the government and the strict laws have little effect on them because they have been brainwashed. In Harrison Bergeron, the Bergerons are sad and tired most of the time because of handicaps. Finally,"Old Glory" is less believable than Harrison Bergeron. "Old Glory" is less far away in the future than Harrison Bergeron. That makes the story less believable because it is unlikely for America to become corrupt in less than 30 years. The corruptness in"Harrison Bergeron" is more likely because it is more than 60 years into the future. "Harrison Bergeron" is more possible, so the theme is more intense.
