People die every day, all over the world, but we must question how many of those deaths are the fault of others more powerful than them. In the stories Lord of the Flies, Macbeth and The Rocking Horse Winner, all three authors suggest that people who have power are often overcome with its lustful nature, through Jack, and The Twins, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth, Paul and Mother.

In The Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses Jack and the Twins to demonstrate the effect of lust overcoming an individual. Jack was given the position of head hunter by Ralph, but soon after receiving this position he became obsessed with the thought of more power. Lady Macbeth was delighted to hear that her husband and just became the Thane of Cawdor, but as soon as she realized the witches prophesy had been true the influential ability of power took over. Lady Macbeth wanted it and she realized that the King need to be dead in order for her to gain it. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that if he killed the King “to be more than what you were, you would be so much more than man”. Moreover, Lady Macbeth disregards morals because she is overcome with the authority and control she will gain becoming Queen. However, Macbeth is not much better as he gains more power he seemed to care less about who he had killed. Macbeth had Banquo and his son killed by two assassins proclaiming “It is concluded. Banquo, thy soul’s flight, if it find heaven, must find it out tonight”. Macbeth wanted them dead by tonight because he needed the job done not thinking about what he is really doing due to how absorbed he is in the idea of being King and leader. Both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are enveloped with the idea of being King and Queen that they forget about what the consequences for others may
