Love stories are not always like what many think with two lovers destined to be with one another. Although many stories end with “happily ever after,” some end in death or unfortunate situations. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is about two lovers from enemy families, face many great obstacles to be together but results in multiple deaths from both families. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, is about a teen named Katniss who volunteers as a tribute in the Hunger Games, where competitors kill one another to be last one standing. Katniss gets paired up with Peeta and together, they pretend to stand out from the rest through romantic story, gaining attention and a higher chance of survival. The Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet by Shakespeare, is about two lovers attempting various approaches to get away from the chaos around them and be together. One last attempt is drinking sleeping potion the day before Paris and Juliet’s marriage and deceive everyone into thinking Juliet has died. Juliet’s death reached all the way to Mantua where Romeo is residing at after getting banished. Romeo returns to Juliet’s tomb but is interrupted by Paris and they fought until Paris dies. Before committing suicide, Romeo cries “O my love, my wife, Death, that hath sucked the honey of thy breath... Eyes! Look your last. Arms, take your last embrace… Here’s to my love. Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die (5,3,92-120)”. Romeo is heartbroken when he sees Juliet “dead.” Romeo commits suicide since he believes that there is no purpose to living after his lover has left the world. In The Hunger Games by Collins, when the Gamemakers only allow one victor, Katniss and Peeta decides to die together instead of leaving each other. Collins writes, “I loosen the top of the pouch and pour a few spoonfuls of berries into his palm. Then I fill my own.. […] I spread out my fingers, and the dark berries glisten in the sun. I give Peeta’s hand one last squeeze as a signal, as a goodbye, and we begin counting. It’s too late to change my mind. I lift my hand to my mouth, taking one last look at the world. The berries have just passed my lips when the trumpets begin to blare (Collins, 339).” The Hunger Games usually only allowed one winner but since Katniss and Peeta’s romance grab the attention of the audience throughout the Games, the Gamemakers must crown both as champions. Collins’ use of figurative language builds up suspense and put the readers wondering if the Gamemakers would allow Katniss and Peeta to die. Even thought Katniss states that she has never “loved” anyone throughout the novel, why would she die for Peeta when they were the only ones left?
