“The Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove” is a book written by James Moloney. It is set in Wattle Beach, a small town located near a beach. In the book the protagonist Carl goes through many tough times in his life, however he always finds help to get around them!
With Carl’s family gone, he’s only got his brother Harley and aunt Beryl. Beryl’s belligerent attitude towards him and Harley shows him that she’s not part of his family. It’s imperative that Carl finds his true family that loves and cares for him and Harley. Her attitude is the main reason that Carl doesn’t feel like he belongs in Wattle Beach. “Carl, I’m not your mother” Beryl tells Carl when he shows a little sign of joy. She later goes on to comment “Who’ll love you if your own mother doesn’t…” Joy Duncan realises that Carl and Harley need help, so she allows Harley to stay with her. She proves this when she says “You’re [Carl] just about family now; with all the work on Dad’s barge and Harley living in the house with us.” The book ends with Carl and Harley with the Duncans.…show more content… He feels like nobody wants to be his friend, and that nobody cares for him. Carl then meets Justine who councils him about his emotions and his family. “You [Carl] needed her [his mother] to love you” is only one of her priceless words of guidance to Carl. Justine not only cares for him, but also loves him! She admits this at Maddie’s farewell party “You couldn’t hide it. I felt like I was melting just watching you and I knew straight away that I wanted you to look at me like that. ” Justine helps Carl overcome his trepidation of Wattle
