There have been 44 men to have the honor of holding office as President of the United States in our great nation’s history. Many of them were spectacular and memorable leaders, while others are commonly forgotten. Two Presidents who both fall under the superb category had very opposing views to one another. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and President Ronald Reagan had differing opinions on the proper role of government in the economic sphere. Although they held office at very different times in the United States’ history, their policies can be easily contrasted. He is also known for promoting what is commonly known as “a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis security and prosperity can be established for all regardless of station, race, or creed” (“FDR: State of the Union”). Unlike the first ten amendments, these rights are guaranteeing that somebody has to give you something. Including the “right to a useful and remunerative job,” which could have been better received as a right to work, but in this context it basically states the right to demand employment. The “right to adequate medical care and opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health” would also guarantee healthcare to an individual with no insurance or money. So who would pay the medical bill? Would the doctors and nurses work for free? Would the medicine be free? The “right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation” is also a guarantee; after demanding a job, you also have the right to demand a certain salary from that employer. Just with these examples one can see that this second Bill of Rights requires an expansion of the government to make this a possibility with federal government programs.
