Comparison/Contrast Essay As the world’s fastest-growing major economy, China’s economy has been developing at a high speed in past 30 years. It, to some extent, leads to dramatic changes of the Chinese society in many aspects such as living standard, education level, and communication methods. There is no doubt that the value of every generation is greatly affected by these social changes. In my opinion, there is great distinction between my generation and my parents’ generation on view of love, view on a job, and view on consumption.
First of all, compared to my parents, my generation takes a totally different position towards love. Nowadays, most young people insist on choosing their boyfriends or girlfriends by themselves. Moreover, statistics show that divorce is not a big deal for many young people. B in 30 years ago, traditional culture shows strict rules on choosing a spouse. My parents’ generation could never violate the traditional rules which supposed that parents were responsible for helping their son or daughter to pick out a mate, and breaking up with spouse was regarded as ominous. Those who violated rules were considered allegedly disobedient. Second, view on a job is varied among generations too. To consider what job position is most appropriate for them, the younger generation in China has to evaluate on many factors such as possibility of promotion, work atmosphere, and interest. The older generation, on the other hand, only cares about how much money he/she could earn. No matter whether a job needs a long working time or provides a harsh working environment, they might still choose it. Third, unlike my parents, people of the same age to me think that the purpose of earning a salary is to enjoy their life. Thus, they are inclined to spend most of money on clothing, electronic equipment or entertainment. When buying something, they are used to using credit cards and pay off the debt in the last month of a year. In contrast, the older generation spends money on seemingly practical things such as house, household appliances, or health insurance, and he/she may deposit most of his/her money to saving accounts. One of the most important reasons is that they experienced the worst time in China when they could hardly afford common food. So saving is important for them. To sum up, my parents’ generation appears more conservative on their attitudes toward something than my generation does. However, my parents’ generation retains many good qualities that I must learn. I should not only learn to make the best use of money rationally, but also learn to think of a problem from a more realistic view.
