Basketball and Soccer
In modern life, most people enjoy amazing sports. Two of most exciting and common sports to participate andappreciate are basketball and soccer. People can not only watch both of them on television, but they can also playthem for recreation and health. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the differences and similaritiesbetween these two sports. There are three aspects of these two sports: athletes, popularity, and equipment.
The most noticeable difference between these two kinds of sports is their requirement of players. Both these twosports require different physical qualities of athletes or players. Basketball is one kind of sport that uses the upperbody; in contrast, soccer uses legs to control the ball and to win scores. Basketball players should be taller thannormal people, because basketball players need to get the rebounds and block(McDowell, Fryar, Ogden & Flegal, 2008). The average height of the NBA sportsmen is 7'15.93" ("2006-07 player survey:," 2007). On the other hand, soccer players do not have to be very tall. Soccer have great players of all heights, such as Maradona 1.65 m, PeterCrouch 2.01 m. Albeit physical differences, both of these sportsmen are strong and powerful because both kinds ofsportsmen occur numerous physical confrontation during games.
The second difference is popularity from different areas. While basketball and soccer are both popular, they differ inthe degree from areas of the world. The ten most popular countries for soccer are Spain, Germany, Uruguay,Netherlands, Portugal, Brazil, England, Croatia, Denmark, Argentina("Fifa/coca-cola world ranking," 2012). However,American people do not crazy for soccer like other countries'. "soccer has been less popular in the United Statesthan most other parts of the world"(Waddington & LastRoderick, 1996). In comparison, soccer is more popular inEuropean, Asian, African and South American countries. Similarly, basketball is also a popular sport in the wideworld. However, basketball is a sport that American people really enjoy. The most famous, popular basketballleague, NBA, was founded in the United States of America, and NBA stands for the top degree of basketball in theworld.
Another aspect between these two sports is equipment. Although basketball and soccer belong to ball games, thereare some differences of equipment for these sports. The first difference is the field. Soccer is played on a natural orartificial grass surface that is 125 yards long and 65 yards wide. Basketball, on the other hand, is played on awooden floor 94 feet long and 50 feet wide at the college and pro levels. The second difference is the ball. Whilesoccer typically uses a thickly-padded, smooth leather ball with black and white pentagonal sections, basketballuses an orange leather ball encircled with thin symmetrical lines (Martin, 2011). In conclusion, soccer andbasketball use different equipments for athletes to compete.
These are the three basic similarities and differences between basketball and soccer. As we can see, through thecomparison above, people love these two kinds of sports because they contain good competitiveness based on fairprinciples. These two sports motivate people to keep fit and to be stronger. Thereby, basketball and football betterannotate the proverb "Life lies in the movement".

Comparison-Contrast Essay

...Aaron Hailey 2.9.15 Comparison-Contrast Essay Block 2 Cowardice can be shown in many ways. Torturing others and putting fear into the hearts of innocent people is one of them. In Yevgeny Yevtushenko’s “A Precocious Autobiography” and Burton Raffel’s translation of Beowulf, Red, a Russian bully who rules the streets of his neighborhood, and Grendel, a terrifying monster who can never be loved by God, are two bullies who, though they are worlds apart, share many of the same characteristics. Like red, Grendel enjoys petrifying his victims with his intimidating presence. Red has an advantage over the other boys because he is much bigger than them. “Red could stop any boy and say impressively the one word “money”(490). He appears to be unbreakable with his strong build, but the reader should know that just like any other bully, red is a coward deep down. Grendel’s appearance would send chills through pretty much anyone’s spine since he is the Devil’s child. Grendel is described as a “powerful monster, living down in the darkness” (ii 1-2). Even though he is a demon, he’s still capable of being a coward. He insists on feeding on the lives of innocent people who stand no chance against him. If that isn’t pure cowardice, I don’t know what is. However, Grendel works alone while Red works with his “lieutenants.” Red needs the assistance of other boys so that he may look much tougher than he actually is. “Two or three lieutenants, in peaked caps back to front like Red’s, trotted...

...Dytayja Cohen English 101 In Class Essay: Comparison Contract Essay Professor Brown Rich Neighborhoods vs. Poor Neighborhoods In America, there are Many types of neighborhoods, but two specific types of neighborhoods are rich neighborhoods and poor neighborhoods. Rich neighborhoods are usually inhabited by people who make upwards of $100,000 per year. Poor neighborhoods May be inhabited by people who Mame much less than that. These two types of neighborhoods are usually drastically different. In rich neighborhoods people tend to live in huge houses. In some Cases, it may seem as if all of the houses look the same, maybe not on the outside, but all of the houses may have the same building structure. The outside of these houses may be nicer than many othwe houses in different neighborhoods, because these people either have the time to mow the lawns cut their grass, plant gardens, and trim the hedges or they may have the money to pay other people for these services. Rich neighborhoods may be seen as snobbish, or that people just buy these houses as a status symbol, because there usually aren't that many people living in one big house. For example, one person may live in a five bedroom house. Some people may think that one person simply does not need to live in a house that spacious. Living in a rich neighborhood is also more beneficial for the kids because there are better resources. For example, there may be more options to different types of schooling...

Comparison And Contrast Synthesis Essay

...Michael eliminates the letter “l”. Therefore, in the word “plane”, Michael eliminates the “l” and pronounces it “pane”. He alternates between eliminating the first consonant and eliminating the second consonant. c) Sarah is simplifying her consonant cluster pronunciation by using a few systematic rules: she has two separate treatments for different types of consonant clusters and she is consistent within each type. Michael seems to have followed a similar system to Sarah. This can be observed when the consonant clusters “st”, “sp” and “pl” are compared. d) Based on my observations, I think Michael would pronounce the word “blame” as “bame” and the word “scale” as “tale”. The “k” sound conversion would likely still hold true in this case. Essay 2 1) a. hand motion b. palm orientation c. hand position d. hand shape 2) Duality of patterning is demonstrated here because the pairs of sign show their ability to give individual and different messages. Duality of patterning refers to the ability of human language, both signed and spoken, to form discrete meaningful units. In other words, individual hand signals develop intrinsic meaning when combined in certain ways in situational contexts. 3) The principle of universal grammar holds that all languages must have an underlying, common structure corresponding to the innate language processing abilities of human beings. Linguists do not all agree on what exactly defines a universal grammar, but can identify many traits that all languages...

As can be seen, I am so very similar to Shrek in ways that may seem impossible to some. First of all, there are countless similarities between me and the large green ogre, Shrek. Shrek has his own movie franchise and even some spin-offs of his friends such as Gingerbread man, Puss in boots and Donkey. He also has his very own swamp which, has no trespassing allowed. After all, Shrek has his own movie franchise made by...

Comparison And Contrast Essay: Basketball Vs College Basketball

...The NBA and college basketball are both very exciting and entertaining but is that all they have in common? Fans may think the two leagues have more differences than similarities, but this article will show you both sides and you make your own decision whether the leagues are more similar or more different. Both leagues have the same number of players on the court, obviously five, and the same type of play style, set up your offense by driving to the basket and kicking it out to the three point line. They try to facilitate the game by not staying stagnant. Teams stay tenacious to be intimidating. They try to hoodwink others to keep their plays unguardable. The dimensions of the court and ball are the same. The court is ninety-four feet by fifty feet and the ball is twenty-nine and a half inches. The height of the basket and the distance of the foul line are also the same. Some teams are daunted by others. Through all of these similarities, there are some key differences that might persuade people to think the leagues are different. The shot clock is a timer that counts down, and the team has a certain amount of time to get a shot off. In the NBA, the shot clock is twenty-four seconds but in college, it adopted a thirty second shot clock last year. This happens to be one of the biggest differences between the two leagues. It is hard for players to adjust to the shorter shot clock when the make the pros. Another difference is the length of the game. In the NBA, the game has four...

Comparison And Contrast Essay: Service Dogs Vs. Service

...Dogs are those kinds of animals who have supernatural ability to determine if we feel sad or stress, happy or angry, and instead of staying away from it or ignore it, they look more attracted to it. Dogs do not keep notes and they are good listeners, and they help humans in many ways that humans themselves fail to do so. Dogs have the ability to connect to humans on emotional and spiritual levels. Now we can find dogs in everywhere, in hospitals, airports, police departments and schools, and they refer to us as service dogs. Comfort dogs and search and rescue dogs are two kinds of service dogs that I will write about, and I will focus on three main points in my discussion which is the differences and similarities between these two kinds, the purpose of each one them, the importance of the job for both of them. Comfort dogs or K-9 Dogs are specially-trained Golden Retrievers kind of dogs, and the comfort dog program started in 2008 by Lutheran church charities. They travel through the United States a lot visiting cities that been devastated by a disaster or tragedy one after another. Those dogs can be seen mainly in hospitals and schools to deliver solace to everyone who hurts. On the other hand, search and rescue dogs are professionally-trained German shepherds’ kind of dogs, and Ellie our main character was one of these dogs who worked for search and rescue unit in a police department. Those dogs do not get to travel; on the contrary, they stay in the same city work for the...

Comparison and Contrast Essay of “the Destructors” and “the Rocking-Horse Winner”

...Within this essay, I will compare and contrast the characters, conflict, settings, and tone that are found within the stories of “The Destructors” by Graham Greene and “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence. I will also point out the vast similarities in both of these short stories. It is my intention to show you the how these are centered around biblical truths. Both of these short stories are written by British authors, but in different eras. Each of these stories was written during post war periods. “The Rocking-Horse Winner” was written shortly after World War I and “The Destructors” after World War II. This is integrated into the story of “The Destructors” as part of the history of the area. After each of these world conflicts, the economy and living conditions of England was that of simple survival. I believe that these events are used by the authors in describing the hardships of the times within both stories. Both stories are centered on young boys. Paul is the main character of “The Rocking-Horse Winner” and Trevor in “The Destructor.” Besides their young age, these two boys had quite a different life. Paul did not have any friends that were his own age in the story. The two predominate characters in his life were the gardener, Bassett and his uncle, Oscar. Paul led a secluded life, away from other children. He turned all his frustrations and energy inward toward a personal goal of obtaining luck and money. In contrast, Trevor was a member of...

Comparison And Contrast Essay: Deep Sea And Old Growth Forest

...Compare and Contrast Essay The Atlantic deep sea and an old growth forest are a complete opposite, right? No, the deep sea and an old growth forest are almost the same. There are many reasons why the PNW old growth and the deep sea are similar and different. Both the deep sea and the PNW old growth forests are very interesting places. One has no air, and the other one is only air. As Wade Davis once said, “A language is not just a body of vocabulary or a set of grammatical rules. Every language is an old-growth forest of the mind." I feel like that relates to an old growth because it’s something lingering that is always there and can be very beautiful. The Atlantic Ocean covers 41,100,000 square miles. The Atlantic ocean is 6.5 times bigger...

Comparative Essay: Comparison and Contrast Between Big Bang Theory and Biblical Beliefs

...BIG BANG THEORY ------------------------------------------------- The first primordial stars began as tiny seeds that grew rapidly into stars one hundred times the mass of our own Sun. Seen here in this artist impression, swirling clouds of hydrogen and helium gasses are illuminated by the first starlight to shine in the Universe. About 13.7 billion years ago, the Big Bang is thought to have created our universe. For about 1.5 billion years, the universe went through a cosmic dark age, until finally the first stars and galaxies were born. Many details of how those stars were born are not known, but the new experiment helps fill in some gaps. "The first star formation is a really fascinating intersection between chemistry and cosmology," said researcher Daniel Savin of Columbia University in New York, during a Wednesday press conference. "What it's telling us is that in order to understand the very beginnings of star formation, we need to really understand fundamental chemistry." Early universe unveiled The early universe was made mostly of hydrogen, with some helium and trace amounts of other elements. This matter clumped together under its own gravitational pull to form clouds. Within these clouds, scientists think hydrogen atoms (which contain one proton and one electron) bonded with negatively charged hydrogen ions (one proton and two electrons) to form molecular hydrogen, consisting of two hydrogen atoms chemically bonded. This chemical reaction served to cool...

Comparison & Contrast Essay - Living at Home and Living Away from Home as Students (During the Higher Education Studies)

...Comparison & Contrast Essay Living at home and living away from home as students (during the higher education studies) Millions of students are often faced with the question of whether it is better to live at home or to go abroad and hence away from home for the period of their studies. Many would probably intuitively say that leaving home is an effort that is not necessary since the same opportunities for one’s study are often given where one lives, thus at the home city or home place. However, there are a number of advantages that can be found about the same decision. To begin with, living at home while studying means being close to family, friends and colleagues one knows, likes, and loves. It is simple, convenient and beneficial to keep and foster those relations. In fact, most friendships are built in the environment one grew up in, went to school, or worked. Hence, staying home during the studies provides the possibility for spending more enjoyable time with these friends and family members. This means that one can go out for a drink with friends after the university or college, have a dinner or enjoy a movie at the cinema together. More importantly however, apart from spending the good times together, very often study-related problems occur. This could mean to have troubles with a lecturer who does not grade fairly or fellow students who do not treat someone appropriately, i.e. teasing or even fighting. Especially during times like these, will it be essential to...
