A Comparison and Contrast of Two Major Fast Food Chains
In today’s era of low-carbohydrate diets and obsessive exercise routines, people are more careful with their food choices. The 21st century necessitates convenience where fast food restaurants accommodate the need for cheap food quickly. Unfortunately, these foods are not always the healthiest of choices. Historically, fast food restaurants have been synonymous to processed high fat foods. In rejection to this stereotype, two major fast food restaurants, Wendy’s and McDonald’s, now offer healthier menu choices low in saturated fats and carbohydrates without sacrificing taste. Wendy’s and McDonald’s fall under the same umbrella of fast food yet possess noticeably different characteristics in healthy choice menu items. Despite differing considerably in the variety and presentation of healthy alternatives, both Wendy’s and McDonald’s offer numerous salad choices as the healthy food staple.
Perhaps the most incredible breakthrough Wendy’s and McDonald’s have had health wise was the introduction of healthy burger alternatives to their menus. Wendy’s has one healthy choice sandwich to offer, the Ultimate Chicken Grill that boasts only 6.5 grams of fat when loaded with all savory toppings. Although Wendy’s offers only this one item as a healthy choice sandwich, Wendy’s has always been a leader in the provision of various healthy menu items. Its small order of chili, containing only five grams of fat, is a healthy alternative favorite. As well, the baked potatoes, minus large quantities of fatty toppings, are a great choice to satisfy the healthy appetite. For example, a baked potato with chives and sour cream has only five grams of fat; whereas, the hot-stuffed baked potato with cheddar cheese and bacon has a high twenty five grams of fat. Both chains were renowned for their broad spectrum of consumers on a global basis. McDonald’s spearheaded global expansion with its first overseas outlet in Canada in 1967 and entering Japan in 1971. McDonald’s outlets experienced tremendous success in Japan with record breaking daily sales and speed of expansion in the initial stage. KFC similarly started global expansion early with its first overseas outlet in England in 1964 and entered Japan in 1970. However KFC was not as successful as McDonald’s and did not experience profit until six years after entry. KFC opened outlets in Hong Kong in 1973 which all were closed within two years. The company would eventually gain the confidence of Hong Kong customers ten years after its entry. There was a completely different experience in China for KFC. They were recognized as the leader in foreign QSR as well as a significant player in the Chinese restaurant industry as a whole, contributing 1% in the country’s total food and beverage revenues in 2005. In 2005 KFC outlets in China recorded an average on 1.2 million in annual sales per store, compared to just 900,000 for similar stores in the US.
