Deceitful Truth

...story wrestles with the idea that often people become blind by the quest for the “truth”, so mesmerized by its light they also become obliterated of what else may wait beyond that one “truth”. Firstly, this two sided manipulative truth is evident when the dead rise from their cemeteries and start to expose what they actually are like compared to what others portray them as. This event is encrypted when one of the dead rise and write “here reposes Jacques Olivant, who died at the age of fifty-one. He hastened his fathers death by unkindness, as he wished to inherit his fortune, he tortured his wife, tormented his children, deceived his neighbors, robbed everyone he could, and died wretched”(Maupassant 152). This horrifying truth of the dead coming back from the afterlife to prove a point of how the perspectives of there loved ones is incorrect compared to how the dead truly are from the inside, referring to there motives, thoughts, and aspirations they had while they were living. This relates back to how people blind themselves and simply fail to look beyond the horizon just because they know the real “truth” is going to be so much more harsh then their made-up softened version of the “truth”. This event depicts how this dead man did so many heinous deeds that not only deceitful for those around him but, at the end deep down in his heart didn’t let him rest in peace even after death. Going back to the message of the...

Johnson * Young and Isolated by Jennifer M. Silva Sleeping With Guns By BRUCE HOLBERT THE summer before my sophomore year in high school, I moved into my father’s house. My father had remarried and the only unoccupied bedroom in his house was the gun room. Against one wall was a gun case he had built in high school, and beside it were two empty refrigerators stocked with rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. My bed’s headboard resided against the other wall and, above it, a resigned-looking, marble-eyed, five-point mule deer’s head with a fedora on its antler rack. The room had no windows, so the smell of gun oil filled my senses at least eight hours each day. It clung to my clothes like smoke, and like a smoker’s cigarettes, it became my smell. No one in my high school noticed. We all smelled like something: motorheads of motor oil, farm kids of wheat chaff and cow dung, athletes like footballs and grass, dopers like the other kind of grass. It did not appear to anyone — including me — that residing within my family’s weapons cache might affect my life. Together, my three brothers own at least a dozen weapons and have yet to harm anyone with them. Despite their guns (or, arguably, because...

...Yellow Wallpaper." by Charlotte Perkins Gilman which was written in the year 1892 and "The Story of an Hour." by Katie Chopin which was written in the year 1894. Both stories will be discussed with details in the preceding paragraphs. To look at the stories in comparison one can identify that both of the females lived during the same era.  It was a time when women whose husbands had a decent income were expected to be demure and fragile.  Women were considered to be delicate creatures that should take to their bed and rest.  The husbands controlled the entire destiny of the woman and family.  In both stories the women are fragile women who have become psychologically ill due to the pretenses they were expected to demonstrate. The differences were that one woman is living in the city, her husband has gone off to work, she has a heart condition, and she had believes him dead.  The husband appears and she dies because her chance at freedom is lost. The woman with the yellow wall paper is in a country house on vacation.  She is forced to play sick and is told she must rest by her husband and doctor.  As a result she descends into madness believing the wall paper has come alive. The most intense level of comparison between both is the idea of a woman seeking to define her own narrative.  The woman in "The Yellow...

...Sahira Younas In the two sonnets, “Remember” by Christina Rossetti and “The Cross of Snow” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the authors address death and remembrance indicating similarities when exploring grieving process but also demonstrate its differences through literary techniques. They both utilized symbolism, imagery, and metaphorical language but showed differences in tone. Christina Rossetti and Henry Longfellow utilized symbolism to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that guides the reader to understand the poem as a whole. In “Remember”, the poet incorporated the volta-the shift. Before line 9, the speaker insisted the beloved remember ought to remember her. Afterward, she changes her mind and says it is better for her beloved to forget her because remembering her will be painful. That shift symbolized the speaker’s love. She would rather sacrifice the only thing keeping her “alive” and metaphorically kill herself, than to ask her lover to hold onto the pain. In “The Cross of Snow” incorporates symbolism in the title. The “cross” is a symbolic meaning before Christians because Jesus died on the cross and “snow” is white which represents purity. Longfellow essentially says that his wife is angelic and pure. Both poets incorporated imagery to means to use figurative language to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. In Rossetti’s poem, she includes diction such as, “silent” (line 2), and...

Comparative Religions

...Compare and Contrast: Buddhism and Christianity Comparative Religions, HUMN 448 Buddhism and Christianity are both popular religions with many followers, and both have had an impact on the history of the world. While these religions have both subtle and drastic differences, they also have similarities of the same manner. To see these similarities, we will compare and contrast three sets of articles. The first is an examination of the early lives of both the Buddha and Jesus. The second set is a comparison of “The Lost Son” parables, and the third set is a comparison of the Buddha’s last words and the interpretation of Jesus’ death in the book of Acts. These examinations of Buddhism and Christianity will help to show just how similar the two religions are, for all their differences. First, we examine and analyze the early lives of the Buddha and Jesus. For the early life of the Buddha—the beginning of his mission—we turn to a story called “The Four Passing Sights.” For the beginning of Jesus’ mission, we read Mark 1:1-13. The Buddha began life as Siddhartha, son of a king. At his naming ceremony, priests foretold that he would grow to be either 1) a world ruler if he followed his father’s footsteps; or 2) a world teacher if he were exposed to the sight of suffering. And so Siddhartha was kept in the palace, surrounded by servants and finery, and was never exposed to the world outside. He asks his father’s permission to go to a nearby park, and his father allows him after...

You can’t talk about the development of vampire hunters without speaking of where vampires first started and where they’ve gone now. You start off with Nosferatu and the concept of “vampire hunters” as a book Johnathan Harker finds on his way to Count Dracula’s mansion. He reads it in an inn and ends up taking it with him, after meeting with the Count,...

The Parallels of Dracula and Religion

...running children’s television show) or “Count Chocula” (on the cover of a children’s cereal box). When people hear either the word vampires or Dracula, most of the time people tend to think about the mythical blood sucking race of immortals called vampires and also some people that know a little more than the average person does about vampires may think about several of their stereotypical characteristics such as: they are from a place called Transylvania, they have sharp, pointy teeth to draw blood from the necks of humans, they can not come outside during the day, they sleep in coffins, turn into bats, and they are killed by pure silver, garlic, and several religious artifacts. However, people do not really think about all the connections between the vampires and all of the religious artifacts that are said to kill them. Religion plays a major role in the story of Dracula, because when one looks closely enough to what vampires and Dracula are all about one can see that vampires are basically the antichrist. Without religion the alternative ways of killing a vampire would make them seem almost as though they are regular humans. “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”, which was first published in the year 1897, was not the first story of vampires written in Literature but it most certainly did become the most famous world wide, the idea...

...Assignment-sk ‘. . . if we admit the existence of a higher or permanent Ego in us -- which Ego must not be confused with what we call the "Higher Self," we can comprehend that what we often regard as dreams, generally accepted as idle fancies, are, in truth, stray pages torn out from the life and experiences of the inner man, and the dim recollection of which at the moment of awakening becomes more or less distorted by our physical memory. The latter catches mechanically a few impressions of the thoughts, facts witnessed, and deeds performed by the inner man during its hours of complete freedom. For our Ego lives its own separate life within its prison of clay whenever it becomes free from the trammels of matter, i.e., during the sleep of the physical man. This Ego it is which is the actor, the real man, the true human self. But the physical man cannot feel or be conscious during dreams; for the personality, the outer man, with its brain and thinking apparatus, are paralyzed more or less completely. -- Transactions of the Blavatsky Lodge, p. 50 Thus,Sleep and death are brothers, according to the old Greek proverb. However, comments G. de Purucker that” they are not merely brothers, born of the same fabric of human consciousness, but are in all verity one, identical. Death is a perfect sleep, with its interim awakenings of a kind, such as in the devachan, and a full human awakening in the succeeding reincarnation. Sleep is an imperfect fulfilment of death, nature's prophecy...

Comparison and Contrast Between “Young Goodman Brown” and “the Lottery”

...SHORT STORY ESSAY Comparison and Contrast between “Young Goodman Brown” and “The Lottery” “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, the two writers uses symbolism, characterization, and conflict to illustrate the hidden dark side of mankind in normal people. The characters in the stories struggle with the conflict between good and evil. To stress the theme of both stories, symbols are applied as a tool for the development of the story. Hawthorne applies objects and names to intensify the theme and Jackson uses names to bring out his theme. Young Goodman Brown sees the conflict with evil and society. The protagonists of this story deals with Satan on a personal level. He lets the evil take over his faith and beliefs, and also realizes some important people in his life can portrait evil. As he says, “My faith is gone!” cried he, after one stupefied moment. “There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name (Hawthorne, 1835). He loses faith in the many people he once looked up to, after witnessing his wife and townspeople perform a sacrifice in the dead of night. The experience distorts his view of good in people, and leaves him feeling uneasy and abandoned. In the Lottery, they also had the conflict of good and evil in society. In an annual lottery, together, friends...

...example of this is I have been to Bahrain numerous times, and all my mother would see on the television is riots and unruly behavior there. I on the other hand did not watch the news, got the security brief from my superiors and carried on my mission. While I was there it was nothing as what my mother and the news had depicted. Every time I have been there it has been peaceful and the locals have always been so very nice. Audience The intended audience was originally for locals, as it was broadcasted on the local news channels. The written news article I chose was from New York Times. Since the incident occurred in Phoenix, AZ, I purposefully chose the New York Times as it is located across the country. This choice makes for a better comparison of data from across state lines. Credible MSNBC and the New York Times are both credible sources that individuals rely on everyday to hear anything from the weather to local in international news. Both of these reports were similar in nature. The New York Times tends to go more in depth, so their article had more specifics such as why the family was arguing and the possible cause of the gunshots, which ultimately took the lives of five family members. Since most arguments and gun related injuries are caused by disputes involving money, the reasoning that the New York Times gives “the family’s limo business” makes a legitimate reason as to why there was such a headed and deadly dispute....
