...Comparison Matrix Marquita S. Henderson Grand Canyon University: PSY-801 July 10, 2013 Comparison Matrix A Comparison Matrix is a grid created specifically to display information in a structural format. In week two of the PSY-801 course, students were presented with the task of completing a comparison matrix, consisting of empirical articles and details of their content. The intent of this particular document is to revisit the matrix from week two and compare the provided findings on a deeper level. The following qualitative assessment will serve as a tool of preparation for the doctoral program. The purpose of developing and reviewing a comparison matrix is to ultimately compare, contrast, and synthesize researchers’ discoveries and conclusions in their works. The comparison matrix in reference, focuses on different facets of bullying in professional environments. The first article, titled, “Individual and situational predictors of workplace bullying: why do perpetrators engage in the bullying of others?” is an examination of the explanation(s) that aggressors tend to intimidate their co-workers. The second article, “Does trait anger, trait anxiety or organizational position moderate the relationship between exposure to negative acts and self-labelling as a victim of workplace bullying?” highlights traits relative to whether or not an individual is indeed a victim of bullying and the correlation between bullying actions. The emphasis is on influences and determinants...

...This essay will compare two articles that will conclude how personality and skills are essential in being a good leader. The premise for each article all had the same hypothesis in mind, with regard to effective leadership. The studies that will be compared will be “Personality traits, management styles & conflict management in a military unit” by Salimi, Karaminia, and Esmaeili (2011) and “The leadership skills strataplex: Leadership skill requirements across organizational levels” by Mumford, Campion, and Morgeson (2007). A comparison of the research questions, sample population, and limitations will be discussed. Salimi and colleagues (2011) investigated personality traits with regard to management styles. They wanted to find out if personality traits had any affect on a leader’s management style and conflict resolution. They found that extraversion and when conscientious leaders were more successful. Northouse (2010) in regards to personality traits gave perfect examples on how personality traits in fact can affect how leaders resolve issues and tribulations. Northouse (2010), stated how leaders are more tolerant for uncertainty, openness, and curiosity. When leaders are confident they are more inclined to be helpful in sudden situations that involve conflict. Mumford and colleagues (2007) addressed the skills needed by a leader to help perform their daily job functions within an organization. ...identity of the doctoral student through their social and academic environments. It is believed that their identity has been developed by the educational environment where they studied, and that the introduction of the Internet created a community of change. Distance education was introduced and the opportunity to teach critical thinking strategies was becoming the norm of the classrooms. Today socialization is the main force in the development of one’s academic identity, the role of the scholar and becoming critical thinkers. Presented in this paper is a comparative analysis of three articles: “Socialization of Doctoral Students to Academic Norms” by Weidman and Stein (2003); “Developmental networks and learning: toward an interdisciplinary perspective on identity development during doctoral study” by Baker and Lattuca (2010); and “Critical thinking distance education and traditional education” by Visser, Visser and Schlosser (2003). Comparison of Research Questions The three articles studied presented a look at the relationships between the faculty instructors and the students and what can be done to help in the socialization of the students. Article one ask the question regarding the preparation of the students for a scholarly role or the role that a student is expected to have after they have earned their doctorate degree. It explores the socialization of the doctoral student to the academic norms of research and scholarship (Weidman, 2003) and what effect that it has on the...

...national market economy, the Chinese aviation industry is now confronted with international competition. Therefore, it is necessary to research the competitive status of Chinese national aviation, as well as advice on how to enhance the competitiveness of the Chinese aviation industry. The main objective of this paper is to propose FAHP as an effective solution for resolving the uncertainty and imprecision in the evaluation of airlines’ competitiveness. In this paper, we review the research of industrial international aviation competitiveness at both home and abroad, discuss a theoretical framework for the study of aviation competitiveness, establish an index system with 5 first-order indicators and 17 second-order indicators, set up a Chinese aviation competitiveness model based on simple fuzzy numbers from the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process, and evaluate the competitiveness of 5 major Chinese airlines. The results show that this model and these indicators are scientific and practical, with a wide range of application prospects for the purpose of improving and increasing Chinese airline competitiveness in the international market. The effective approach presented in this paper is especially applicable when subjective judgments on performance ratings and attribute weights are not accessible or reliable, or when suitable decision makers are not available. ...TRANSACTIONS ON ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT, VOL. 49, NO. 1, FEBRUARY 2002 59 R&D Project Selection Using the Analytic Network Process Laura M. Meade and Adrien Presley Abstract—The analytic network process (ANP) is presented as a potentially valuable method to support the selection of projects in a research and development (R&D) environment. This paper first discusses the requirements of the R&D project selection problem, which requires the allocation of resources to a set of competing and often disparate project proposals. Among the factors complicating this task is the need to make the decision within the framework of an enterprise’s strategic objectives and organizational structure while considering and integrating financial and strategic benefits of each project. The paper discusses the use of the ANP, a general form of Saaty’s analytic hierarchy process, as a model to evaluate the value of competing R&D project proposals. A generic ANP model developed by the authors, which includes in its decision levels the actors involved in the decision, the stages of research, categories of metrics, and individual metrics, is presented. The paper concludes with a case study describing the implementation of this model at a small high-tech company, including data based on the actual use of the decision making model. Index Terms—Analytic hierarchy process, analytic network process, multicriteria decision making, project selection, R&D management, R&D projects. I. INTRODUCTION OR MANY firms...

...of 6 ANZMAC 2009 Adjusting the BCG Matrix for the Recession Avichai Shuv-Ami, The College of Management aviami@colman.ac.il Abstract The idea of the BCG matrix is that managers are able to evaluate their businesses using objective criteria and to develop strategies suitable to the business' particular situation. The BCG matrix can be used for portfolio analysis in times of economic crisis, but adjustments must be made. The first adjustment involves adding two more criteria – profit margins and cash flows. The second adjustment involves redefining the breaking points between the high and low of the relative market share and market growth rate averages of the industry and/or the company. The third adjustment is to add two more strategies – freeze and cut. Using all these adjustments provides better flexibility for BCG matrix analysis in a shrinking economy and recession. 1 ANZMAC 2009 Page 2 of 6 Adjusting the BCG Matrix for the Recession Introduction The BCG matrix has been used in the real world in a variety of ways for such business analysis tasks as analyzing value, business strategy toward customers, segmentation (Dibb 1995) and brand portfolio analysis. As a result of the current financial crisis, which has affected strategic market planning decisions, businesses and practitioners are using the BCG (Boston Consulting Group) matrix in a flexible manner. This paper provides several adjustments to the BCG matrix in order to adjust it to the current economic...

...Paired Comparison Kristy Pidwell University of Phoenix MGT 350 – Critical Thinking: Strategies in Decision Making Group: _____A_____ Dr. Jennie Wong, EdD, MBA, SPHR November 14, 2011 Problem Formulation and Decision-Making Tool The importance of using decision making tools has been helpful throughout man kind, although the stated theories came about not too long ago in 1927 by Ernst Heinrich Weber and Gustav Fechner. Naturally, a person will make a decision based on what they see fit to be the best fit for their needs or wants. Paired comparison is an effective method of decision making. “When our pattern of decision-making is irrational, we live an irrational life. Rational decisions maximize the quality of life without violating the rights or harming the well-being of others. Rational decisions maximize our chances for happiness, successful living, and fulfillment” (Paul & Elder, 2006, p. 1). Decision-Making Tool Paired comparison decision making is a tool used to come to a decision. This allows one to see two people, items or options and compare “apples with oranges”. With this tool, one would take pairs of items and choose the preferred item from the pair; either the preferred item, or the item that has been established to hold the most value. Strengths of this tool The advantages of this tool are for the individual to provide ample information for the decision at hand and to make a sound decision. One must research the options whether...
