George S. Counts and Margaret Haley would agree on that the individual must take the responsibility. Counts talks about how the individual that would aspire to lead society must be responsible to pay the costs of leadership: to accept responsibility, to risk both reputation and fortune, as well as more. Haley says how the American people cannot be made to realize and meet there responsibility to the public schools, no self-appointed custodians of the public intelligence and conscience can do it for them. Both Counts and Haley talk about how it all comes back to the individual. I think Dewey though would respond to George S. Counts, he would agree with him because he as well shares the same beliefs towards progressive education, they both see the problems with it.

One part of Counts writing that is confusing is how he talks so bad about progressive education, even listing ten fallacies about progressive …show more content…
Both Haley and Counts write extensively about the individual. Counts talks about his social theory of the individual, and how it wouldn’t apply to progressive education. That the weakness of progressive education thus lies in the fact that it has elaborated no theory of social welfare, unless it be that of anarchy or extreme individualism. Haley says that the individual is responsible for making it work with the public schools, so everybody can comply together. The importance of teachers is expressed a lot as well. Haley advocates for the teachers a great deal, saying they are not only unpaid, but also have no power in what they are teaching, choice of equipment, or regulations which can hinder the children’s needs. Counts also talks about the teachers, as how they should deliberately reach for power to make the most of their conquest, and that the teachers have to get the students to perceive that they are a greater power so they are seen as a higher up in
