...Week 1 DQ1 Nikki Parkinson Grand Canyon University Week 1 DQ1 What comparisons can be found between the GCU Mission and Domains/CON Mission and Program Competencies (for your selected specialty track, links located in the Course Materials) with the AACN's Essentials for Master's Education for Advanced Practice Nursing (link located in the Week 1 Topic Materials)? Explain your rational. Both the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and Grand Canyon University (GCU) focus on providing students with a program that is "practice-oriented with a goal that professionals develop advanced skills and knowledge for professional roles, and those programs that are more theoretically or research directed with a goal of developing scholars for the generation of new knowledge." ("The Essentials Of Master’s Education For Advanced Practice Nursing," n.d., p. 1) The AACN and GCU both see it important for the masters prepared nurse to be culturally sensitive and understanding of others, and themselves. Thinking critically and using evidence based practice through research helps the masters prepared nurse to provide only the highest quality of care to their patients, families, and communities. Within GCU the College of Nursing (CON) also sees the AACN's essentials as part of their own recognizing that masters prepared nurses need to be able to provide health assessments that are in-depth and accommodating to the person as an individual, as a family or as a community...

...March 10, 2013 The Differences in Competencies Between Nurses Prepared at the Associate-degree Level Versus the Baccalaureate-degree Level. Although both an associate-degree level and baccalaureate-degree level prepared nurses may sit for the same NCLEX-RN exam, “nurses prepared at the baccalaureate-level are linked to lower mortality and failure to rescue rates” (AACN, 2012). This is simply one difference between the competencies of a nurse prepared at an associate-degree level versus one prepared at a baccalaureate-degree level. In the mid 1900’s an associate-degree level nurse was thought of as a “technical nurse”, closer to the role of a limited vocational nurse; created to assist the professional baccalaureate-degree level nurses during nursing shortages (GCU, 2013). Since then associate-degree level prepared nurses can very much function and practice on their own, once passing the state board licensing examination. However differences in patient care and nursing approach are evident between associate-degree level and baccalaureate-degree level prepared nurses. According to Table 2-1 “Comparison of Nursing Education Programs” in Conceptual Foundations: The Bridge to Professional Nursing Practice, the purpose of an associate- degree level program is to “prepare competent, technical, bedside nurses for the secondary care setting” (Friberg, 2011). The table also shows, that the purpose of a baccalaureate-degree level program is to “prepare professional nurse generalists...

...nurse (ADN) verses a baccalaureate-degree level nurse (BSN) when it comes to a nurse’s competence? The purpose of this paper will review and compare competencies between nurses studying at the level of ADN versus BSN and describe a patient care scenario where the decision-making process would differ between degree levels. Nursing Education According to the American Association of College of Nursing (AACN), there are three (3) different levels of education for registered nurses that are offered. These include, a 3-year diploma (offered in hospitals), 3-year associate degree from a community college and the 4-year baccalaureate degree which can be obtained through universities or senior level colleges (AACN, 2014). In order to become a registered nurse, specific amounts of education is needed to receive a degree. Education is imperative. Once graduated from one of the three programs, the same National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN®) will be given. This exam tests minimal competencies to enter the nursing profession and there is no comparison in the passing rate (AACN, 2014). Associate-Degree Nurses Associate-degree nursing programs include one year of general education and two years of clinical courses which prepare the nurse for working in community hospitals, long term care facilities and learning clinical bedside skills (Creasia & Friberg, 2010, p. 26). The associate-level nurse is trained in entry level competencies. “Graduates are prepared with the...

...Running head: COMPARISON BETWEEN ASSOCIATE DEGREE AND Comparison between Associate degree and Baccalaureate degree Candace Haggard GCU Comparison between Associate degree and Baccalaureate degree Nursing education traces its history from the humble beginnings incorporating “on the job” training to a modern era of PhD program at today’s research universities. Currently, there are three levels of education found in entry level nurses: diploma nurses, associate’s degree in nursing, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Often there is confusion as to why nursing students will put forth the extra effort to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As the discussion unfolds, it will become apparent that the nurse trained at the associate degree level tends to practice at a technical level, whereas the nurse educated with a Bachelor of Science degree practices at a professional level. Nurses may have different competencies depending on whether they were educated through an Associate Degree in Nursing Program or a Bachelor of Science Program (Hood & Leddy, 2003). ADN graduates practice within the guidelines of eight core components and competencies identified by the National Council of Associate Degree Nursing Competencies Task Force. These core components are: professional behaviors, communication, assessment, clinical decision making, caring interventions, teaching and learning, collaboration, and managing care. These core components help with clinical decision making...
