...In an article, “Understanding Jazz Audiences: Listening and Learning at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival” Karen and Stephanie attempt to measure how Jazz audiences are influenced by a live performance at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival (EJBF) in 2007, and assess the role that music plays in their broader cultural and emotional lives. The authors use data gained through organizational surveys of fifteen performances to observe the audiences, venues and the experiences during the festival. This research focuses on assessing the audience profile which contends their motivation to participate the festivals and the factors to attend musical events. Moreover, the researchers examine audience expectations and their experiences of jazz listening....

...release which would be a full length jazz cd of original music by a new artist. ANALYSIS OF THE PRODUCT: JAZZ CD There are a couple of things to note as a preface as it is important to note in relation to the economy that will be affected by the product, and the product by the economy. This artist would be a relatively unknown artist on a countrywide scale, however has a strong local market in the Midwest. What this means is that depending if the product is to be focused and released on a local level it will change the approach, terms, and results of the analysis. In this case, the product would have a countrywide focus, and that country being the United States of America. With the focus being on a countrywide market, but the guaranteed fan base and loyalist group being in the Midwest, it should be expected the elasticity of demand will be less on a countrywide scale than a more focused Midwest market approach. The question would then be posed of why would the artist stray away from a guaranteed more elastic demand? If there are promising aspects where the marketing team shows a high demand for local jazz music in certain pockets of the USA, it expands the possibility of a more elastic demand if the artist is exposed to all those pockets in the USA. So while the initial approach is considered an inelastic demand for the product based on the audience, it is expected to become more elastic once the product is exposed to these pockets of jazz music enthusiast and...

...Jazz Appreciation Aaron Wolf 12/1/10 The Comparison of Two Jazz Concerts Jazz Appreciation class presented me with the opportunity to attend two, unique jazz concerts that differentiated in various aspects. I had the pleasure of listening to The Jameson Sanagin Aaron Wolf Duo and The Cuesta Night Band one night after the other. The differences between these concerts could not have been greater and while I closely observed the performers, their music, the venue and the audience, I found few commonalities between the two. Each was very intriguing to listen to, and the large range of differences between the concerts made it easy and interesting to compare and contrast them. Upon my arrival at these concerts, my attention was instantly drawn to observing the venues and the audiences. I first went to listen to The Jameson Sanagin Aaron Wolf Duo perform at the Steynberg Gallery, which is a café that contains a small room displaying many beautiful art pieces on the walls. The concert took place in this room and had a very relaxed, intimate vibe because of the size of the venue and the audience (about thirty people). This aspect of the concert contrasted with The Cuesta Night band’s performance the following night, which took place at Cuesta’s large auditorium. This venue attracted about seventy people who created a louder atmosphere because of the applause, shouts and whistles from many individuals. The high ceilings...

...David Phung Period 6 AP English IV 2-27-11 Buildings (Architecture [Modernism]) and Songs (Music [Jazz]) A foundation is a key to the structures standing. The buildings structure must be sound and balanced in order to rise as a building. A structure is a composition, of parts, the make up of materials that are joined together to make a building. The Fountainhead, with Howard Roark as the protagonist, is an individual that truly sets him part from collaborations and compromise. His independent, rebellious attitude towards compromise strikes him as an individual that has roots of foundation, but prospers in his own wants. His vision, with the combination of music gives him a sense feeling and imagining the abstract structures he has in his mind. Although Roark does not compromise, he’s composed of the roots like a tree, the foundation of the structure that never change, along with the branches and leaves that fall like a deciduous tree, but grow to wave to the winds. Modernism is a style that Roark prefers and only designs. Modernism is the rejection of classical and traditional forms, to modify and break the point of design and new abstract forms in an architectural perspective. The Fountainhead is basically Howard Roark verses the world. The word tries to balance him out. This reflects me with the scene beginning with setting: “ The leaves streamed down, trembling the sun. They were not green; only a few scattered through the torrent, stood out in single...

...Jazz This was a very interesting piece of work by Toni Morrison. I have read other works of Morrison’s and she has a way of writing that can’t be only captured in one point of view or perspective in my opinion. There is always this underlying metaphor or meaning that isn’t recognizable from first glance. In Jazz I feel that there are two things that are the major overtones of the novel. The first is the different affects and types of desires and the other would be the comparisons that can be made back to jazz music. First I want to touch on her concepts of desire. Morrison is theorizing the nature of desire; particularly African American females desire (Cannon, 235). The desires of the two main characters in the novel are what give the story its flare and captivity of the reader. The first example would be the husband Joe. He gets caught up in a love triangle with his wife Violet and mistress eighteen year old Dorcas. First was his going and seeking out Dorcas and having found that sexual desire he yearned for he then kills her to “keep the feeling going” (Cannon, 235). This is what brings Violet’s emotions to light. With her finding out about her husband’s disloyalty drives her into an instant state of anger and depression. Initially Violet only understands sexual desire and that becomes confusing upon the finding of her husband’s doings. Now that everything is in the open her sexual desires then start to manifest into jealous rage. Her first outburst of this jealous rage...

...A man who needs no introduction in the circles of Latin Jazz; Poncho Sanchez is self-taught and is described by many as the hardest working musician in the genre. Sanchez is a world renown congero that has amassed great fame in recent history. Aside from being a great musician, arranger, composer, lead man, and band-leader, he was recognized by the Grammy’s in 2002 for his album titled Latin Soul. Sanchez went on to win his nomination, defeating other great figures such as trumpet player, Bobby Rodriguez, and Cuban Pianist, Chucho Valdez. I initially met Sanchez back in 2001 for the 6th Annual Latin Jazz Caravan. I figured since Sanchez was in town and I needed to write a critique, he would do just fine. Poncho Sanchez was born on October...

...Desire can take many forms; romantic, familial, material, spiritual and emotional. It’s treatment within literature has been widely explored, as demonstrated in the novel The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald and Sonnets from the Portuguese, a collection of poetry from Elizabeth Barrett Browning. These texts convey the notion of individual desire contrastingly and only through comparison can the reader understand their distinctive qualities. The same issues of desire arise within Gatsby and EBB but it is the context that discerns their importance. EBB wrote her sonnets during the romantic era of Victorian society; consequently her treatment of desire was influenced by romanticism, gender expectations and social hierarchy. Her subversion of these influences are unique to her period and through comparison with The Great Gatsby, readers can see how distinct this quality is. Fitzgerald portrays his jazz age America as a spiritual wasteland; a lack of moral values led to the characters to desire the vain values of money, power and status. Thus, desire is seen as a motivating force towards such negative ideals, personified in Daisy and Gatsby’s relationship. Gatsby...

...Valerio Sanders Music Appreciation Final Exam My comparison will go between two periods that was classic vs. romantic classical music composers were satisfied to stay and work within a definite boundary of what made up the acceptable music. In this era the chord resolutions were at all times the identical, and furthermore the connection between keys, sections, and movements, maintained proportion. On the other hand the Romantic composers extended these boundaries or rather limitations, and in place they brought in new chords, atypical key changes and in numerous ways went in opposition to the way they were made in the classical period Romantic period dealt with more emotions. Ludwig Van Beethoven - Symphony No. 5 in C Minor which is my favorite piece from the classical period and Franz Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody which consisted of great story telling through the music. Exoticism influenced by some ethnic groups music groups from the late 19th-century. This means when different ethnic cultures start to make a dramatic influence on the primary music at this time which led to a major change in music. Nationalism is the fact that various types of political evolution were achieved in each country that in turn affected musical nationalism refers to the various national schools that consciously tried to separate themselves from the standards set in the Classical period. Trying to remove themselves from the boundaries of which classical music set transcending music itself...

...Boogaloo, as described in the texts, is a mix between African-American style jazz and Latin music. This melding of cultures had appeared in the United States in the late 1960’s in a very intriguing combination. Today, when one thinks of Latin music, they typically think more about the catchy, high-pitched rhythms, like salsa. Boogaloo, however, has a more relaxing “blues” feeling and also incorporates English and Spanish within the lyrics. On the other spectrum, jazz has a more mellow and thought provoking atmosphere to it. By combining the two, you get a combination of both mellow and upbeat, and not necessarily more so in either direction. Within the article “Bastion of Boogaloo”, Mathew Warren described the life of Johnny Colon who became...

...This Case study is an example of what happens when life gets in the way. Mr. Rogers originally called a meeting with Jeff Dean and Celeste Brown to go over any questions the Mr. Dean had in regards to the survey findings. Mr. Rogers had to excuse himself from the meeting for personal reasons and instructed Ms. Brown to find out what questions Mr. Dean had. He then instructed her to run the analysis and they would go over the results the following day. Ms. Brown ended up with six questions that Mr. Dean was especially interested in. (Burns, A., Bush, R. (2006) p518) The problem with this case study is even though Ms. Brown may be a competent employee she isn’t Mr. Rogers. Mr. Rogers called the meeting and has his own agenda in regards to the survey findings. Unless Mr. Brown and Mr. Rogers are on the exact same page she may not be able to determine the right questions that Mr. Dean may ask: furthermore, her analysis may be in complete depending on what information she has taken form Mr. Dean. Mr. Rogers should have rescheduled the meeting so that he could ensure all pertinent areas regarding the results of the survey and questions were adequately addressed. The strengths of this case are apparent in that it is assumed that Ms. Brown has a good understanding of what Mr. Rogers wants. If she is able to accurately gather the information from Mr. Dean in regards to his concerns about the survey, then her analysis should be accurate: however this will not be known...

...Early Beginnings: Black Swan Records Black Swan Records was a small, black-owned record company created in the early 1900s under the direction and leadership of Harry H. Pace. Although Black Swan’s lifespan was brief, an examination of its history and activities provides a glimpse into the complex, racialized music and recording industry in the early twentieth century. Discrimination in the world of music was just as prevalent as discrimination in other spheres of society, making it difficult for African American musicians to earn a stable, living wage. Moreover, white ownership of clubs, hotels, concert halls, and record companies created a power differential. In contrast, blacks were given less prestigious performance sites and regularly received inadequate pay for their artistic contributions and musical performances. Given these conditions, Pace and his colleagues decided to create a black-owned record company that would promote and support African American musicians, treating them with respect and paying them equal to their talents. In addition, Black Swan Records had a lofty mission that included a desire to reshape negative racial conceptions of black music, as well as to develop strategies for greater access to, and gain material resources that would support and encourage African American business. Early on when record companies finally agreed to allow African American artists to record their music, the industry only permitted styles that conformed to white stereotypes...

...Americans and thoroughly consumed with their talents, the French displayed a respect for Blacks unseen in the United States. While a great number of African-American soldiers remain in Paris, many journeyed back to the United States. Those soldiers certainly were not greeted by change. The United States remained the same racially tensed nation. If there was any change, it was the increase of racial tension. In the summer of 1919, the intensity had peaked so that race riots rampaged throughout the country. At this time, African-American, World War I soldiers fled the country. They return to Paris baring gifts of talent, intelligence, and art. Among the great talent brought to Paris by African Americans was the introduction of Jazz music. The explosive jazz...

...The Evolution of Music: Offensive to Women, yet Acclaimed in Society Victor Hugo, a well known French Romantic writer, once stated “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” Though this statement was made in the 19th century, it continues to stand true to this day. Through decades of evolution, music has constantly been a way for anyone to express themselves through melodies, timbre, dynamics, and lyrics. People around the world are composing, as well as listening to, all kinds of music, and this unifies nations in all countries and continents. Introduction to Literature is an anthology that consists of a variety of literary works – poems, short stories, and excerpts from novels – that discusses globalization. I believe that a chapter regarding the subject of music and its evolution should be included in the Introduction to Literature. Music has continuously been changing ever since the first beat was tapped, the first piano was struck, the first violin was plucked, and the first horn was blown; however, in the last 150 years, the meaning of lyrics and the style of music has changed drastically. From Bing Crosby to Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Eminem, the artists and composers have altered the way music sounds on the radio, computer, and other musical devices. Every genre has artists, who have songs, which have lyrics that contain a story. Whether the story is from a memory, a dream, or an ambition, it becomes...
