“The Fun House” vs “All I Wanted to Do as Dance”
“The Fun House” and “All I Wanted to Do Was Dance” are stories written by Sherman Alexie in his book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. “The Fun House” is centered on Nezzy, the aunt of the narrator. Throughout the story, she struggles with the lack of gratitude she receives from her husband and son which leads to an anger that drives her desperately to change her life. However, In “All I wanted to do was dance” the story is focused on Victor, who is the narrator of “The Fun House”. The story goes through Victor’s love life where he suffers from a broken heart. The pain started to prevent him from moving forward in life. He tries to compensate his pain by getting drunk and dancing. Both of these stories depict the protagonists’ love relationships and the pain they carry. However, in “The Fun House” aunt Nezzy strives to change her life, while Victor, the protagonist of “All I Wanted to Do Was Dance” is trapped in depression.
Both stories illustrate the symbols of pain that the protagonists carry throughout the story. “The funhouse” begins with the narrator stating that his aunt Nezzy sewed a beaded dress that was too heavy for anyone to wear (76). The weight of the beaded dress is a symbol of burden she carries for the family. Aunt Nezzy has to put food on the table for her husband and son, while her thirty year old son still needs a job. This put an extra weight on aunt Nezzy's shoulder. Nezzy mentioned, “When a woman comes along who can carry the weight of this dress on her back, then we’ll have found the one who will save us all” (76). When Nezzy came back from swimming in the creek, the narrator illustrates how she put the “heaviest beaded dresses over her head” and “almost fell from the weight” (82). This symbolizes that she is no longer capable to carry the burden for her family; therefore, she went to the creek although she never knew how to swim. In contrast, a symbol in “all I wanted to do was dance” is alcohol, which represents the pain that prevents Victor from moving forward in life. The pain dwells within Victor in the beginning of the story. As the story moves on, he couldn’t drink alcohol anymore. The narrator mentioned that “he would open one [bottle of alcohol], touch the cold glass to his lips, and feel his heart stagger” (89). As time goes by, he starts to heal from his pain and throws all the alcohol he bought away. The narrator later implies, “the small explosions [of the alcohol bottles], their shattering, was the way he measured time” (89). At the end of the story, Victor met a stranger that advises him to let the alcohol “breathe” as he should let his pain rest.
Another symbol in “All I Wanted to Do Was Dance” is the images of bright/white color that symbolizes the woman that Victor lost. Every time when Victor sees or envisions a bright/white color, it reminds him of the white girl he used to be with. Living through these visions without her beside him leads Victor to emotional pain. When he imagined her in the river, the narrator mentioned “she was so white his reservation eyes suffered” (84). The Narrator stated “In his memory she was all kinds of color, but the only one that really mattered was white “(85). Victor suffers once again by the imaginary presence of the white girl when he turns on his television with a blond woman broadcasting the local news. He switches channels from “tired reporters”, “forest fire” to candy commercials. For him, there was no difference as long he saw bright colors. Victor was baffled by color and led him to vomit (87).
Victor and Nezzy both try to change their relationship life. However, they have different approaches to handle their distress in relationship. Nezzy is more driven by her emotions, while Victor breaks down. When Nezzy’s husband and son were teasing her, she got frustrated and went immediately to the Tshimikain Creek. The narrator mentioned “My aunt walked down her dirt road until she was dizzy” (79). This portrays that the creek was far away from her home. It was not an easy task to reach there by foot. Yet, despite the difficulties she decided to walk to the creek. Nezzy did not have a clue how to swim, but she still decided to swim in the Tshimikain creek even though “the water was brown, smelled a little of dead animal and uranium” (79). Her anger made her to strive for change despite the circumstances. It portrays that Nezzy has a strong will for change. At the end of the story when she came back from the creek, the narrator stated, “she knew things were beginning to change” (82). Victor on the other hand, let his emotions control his whole life. He cannot seem to move on from his lost love, therefore, he endures the pain by getting drunk. Throughout the story, we see that losing his girlfriend starts to affect other aspects of his life. His depression has led him to insomnia. At first, he plans to sleep in 10 minutes. If not, he would read a book (85). The narrator points out “ten minutes passed and he [makes] more promises”. After failing to read a book, he planned to wake up for breakfast and watch the sunrise. However, He ends up lying down till dawn. (85). Victor cannot seem to follow his schedule he planned in his mind. When he finally got up from his bed, he told himself “I’m going to run”, but instead he watched television which reminds him of the vision of the woman he lost. His whole life is cycled by his depression. He even told himself, “Nothing more hopeless than a sober Indian” (87). This shows that he knows that his depression leads to hopelessness. However, he cannot seem to let go of the past and ends up not having the strength to fix his situation. Unlike Nezzy, his action does not lead to change. Nezzy does whatever she can to relive her moment when she was happy. In contrast, Victor does the opposite. The narrator illustrates, “On payday, his wallet stuffed with money, he would stand in front of the beer cooler in the trading post” (89). Alcohol is a reminder of his lost love, yet, he still chooses to continue to drink alcohol which leads him to relive the breakup of his girlfriend. If Victor had the personality of Nezzy, he would have been able to let go and move on with his life. A trait that Nezzy has and Victor does not is that Nezzy take action without planning. Victor makes a to-do list in his mind before taking action and end up in idleness. Comparing to Nezzy, she would have gotten up from her bed, eaten breakfast, watched sunrise, and run three miles without thinking about it in Victor’s situation. In contrast, If Victor was in Nezzy’s situation, he might think of going to the creek, but he wouldn’t able to follow through his plans. Instead he would probably continue sewing beaded dresses or doing something else to cope with the pain. One of the major differences between Victor and Nezzy is that Victor focuses on the past. Victor’s biggest flaw is that he dwells in the past which trapped him from moving forward in life, while Nezzy think how she can take immediate action to change the present.
Although the protagonists of “The Fun House” and “All I Wanted to Do Was dance “have the opposite personalities, both stories contains flashbacks to illustrate the protagonist’ lifestyle of their past. One of flashbacks of “the fun house” illustrates Nezzy’s relationship with her husband where they dance in an Indian cowboy hat (78). This was during Nezzy’s early life when she was dancing with her husband. Although she had some financial difficulties to pay for her education, she enjoyed her occupation as a dancer back in the day. The narrator mentioned “My aunt smiled and laughed. She was a beautiful dancer, had given lessons at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio to pay her way through community college” (78). After the dance they went back home and end up in a car accident. Although Nezzy was bleeding terribly, she still stayed with her husband in the hospital and took care of him. When her husband woke up, he asks if he was in the hospital again. From this flashback, it shows that this is not the first time that Nezzy took him to the hospital (78). Another flashback in “The Fun House” takes place on the day Nezzy was about to give birth to her son where she had to go through tremendous pain. Both these flashbacks show how she was sacrificing for her family multiple times and had to go through many painful experiences throughout the years. Similar to “the funhouse”, the flashbacks of “All I Wanted to Do is Dance” also focus on the past experience of the protagonist relationship. Victor still remember “how white and small [the girl’s hands are and how] they looked against his brown skin as they lay together, wrapped in sheets. She fell asleep easily and he watched her, listened to her breathing, until breath fell into the same rhythm, until he slept”. These memories emphasize the pain of Victor’s lost. One of the flashbacks portrays how alcohol destroyed Victor’s relationship. The girl asks him to dance, but Victor chooses to drink one more beer instead. The narrator declared, “He thought one more beer could save the world…One more beer and he would sign any treaty for her” (88). Victor follows the path of his parents. Alcohol was reinforcement for Victor’s parents’ love relationship. Victor observed “they were drunk”; “They were in love” (88-89). Therefore, he desires alcohol, because from his experience, alcohol supposes to lead to happiness and love instead of separation. When Victor was eight to nine years old, he was fancydancing “in the same outfit his father wore as a child” The narrator mentioned, “The feathers were genetic; the fringe was passed down like the curve of his face”. This depicts that Victor has adapted the behaviors from his parents.
In essence, both stories are focused on the love relationship of the protagonists. The beaded dress of Nezzy symbolizes the pain she carry throughout her life. In comparison, alcohol represented the pain of Victor that he carries until the end of the story. However Nezzy, the protagonist of “the fun house” was able to experience change almost instantly because she took immediately action, while Victor could not let go of his past. The flashbacks of both stories portray the protagonists’ past experiences and give the reader a deeper sense on how they end up in their position.

...be asked to write papers in which you compare and contrast two things: two texts, two theories, two historical figures, two scientific processes, and so on. "Classic" compare-and-contrast papers, in which you weight A and B equally, may be about two similar things that have crucial differences (two pesticides with different effects on the environment) or two similar things that have crucial differences, yet turn out to have surprising commonalities (two politicians with vastly different world views who voice unexpectedly similar perspectives on sexual harassment). In the "lens" (or "keyhole") comparison, in which you weight A less heavily than B, you use A as a lens through which to view B. Just as looking through a pair of glasses changes the way you see an object, using A as a framework for understanding B changes the way you see B. Lens comparisons are useful for illuminating, critiquing, or challenging the stability of a thing that, before the analysis, seemed perfectly understood. Often, lens comparisons take time into account: earlier texts, events, or historical figures may illuminate later ones, and vice versa. Faced with a daunting list of seemingly unrelated similarities and differences, you may feel confused about how to construct a paper that isn't just a mechanical exercise in which you first state all the features that A and B have in common, and then state all the ways in which A and B are different. Predictably, the thesis of such a paper is usually an assertion...

Introduction Your introduction — like the five-paragraph-essay, should open generally (with a quotation, anecdote, generalization), and lead into the thesis statement. 2. Topic 1 This next portion of your essay (which may consist of one paragraph or several) should cover only the first topic of the comparison and contrast. Compare/Contrast essays take two topics and illustrate how they are similar and dissimilar. Do not mention topic 2 in this first portion. 3. Topic 2 This next portion of your essay (which may also consist of one or more paragraphs) should cover the second of the two topics. Do not discuss Topic 1 in this section. Since you have already gone into great detail about it, you may allude to Topic 1 briefly; however, do not analyze Topic 1 in this section. This portion of the paper is to discuss Topic 2 in great detail. 4. Topics 1 and 2 Together Now that you have analyzed both Topic 1 and Topic 2 independently, now it is time to analyze them together. This section may also be one or several paragraphs. 5. Conclusion The conclusion — like the introduction — should be a generalization of the thesis. This paragraph should express your certainty and absolute knowledge on the subject matter. You should reaffirm your thesis (essentially restate it in new words) and show...

Comparing Online Shopping with Traditional Shopping

...shopping has grown to new heights over the last decade and shows no signs of slowing down. The internet has brought practically every store in the world to the fingertips of anyone with internet access. Shopping online gives the user the opportunity to search for the product they want through endless avenues. Online shopping has grown so large that many companies are not investing in buildings and mall space, rather in online websites and web advertising. Through this paper I will discuss the reasons why shopping online is a better alternative to traditional shopping. The first benefit of online shopping is the convenience. While others are out fighting traffic and waiting in lines, online shoppers are home relaxing. Online shoppers can go from store to store with a flick of a mouse, while traditional shoppers have to walk, drive or can’t get to the stores they want. Online shoppers also benefit when it comes to comparison shopping. Traditional shoppers have to put a lot of work into comparison shopping. They have to drive from place to place find items and price and go onto the next place. This can be exhausting and stressful. The online shopper can do this from his or her couch. Online shoppers can search the planet for the product they are looking for, while traditional shoppers are limited to a small area. When it comes to seeing, touching, and trying out a new product, there is no substitute for actually going to the mall and examining the item in...

...Keiyonna young Ms. Herzog Communications 27 July 2015 Literary Comparison: Deception at its greatest All it takes is a beautiful fake smile to hide an injured soul and they will never notice how broken you really are! -Unknown In this paper I will briefly compare two pieces of literature and their authors. The first is “We Wear the Mask (1896)” by Paul Laurence Dunbar and "Richard Cory (1897)" by Edward Arlington Robinson. I really enjoy poetry and was amazed at the similarities found in these two pieces despite the very noticeable difference in the authors. I started of my paper with a quote from an unknown author which will help set the tone for the two poems I will be comparing. This quote describes something we all have at one time or another. We all have at some point in our lives encountered (or will encounter) a time where we have to do or go through something that we did not want to do or experience. A time where we cannot let on to others what we are truly feeling inside. Whether it is at work or staying strong for family or friends or just putting on a front for the world. These two authors wrote poems about this very thing. Paul L Dunbar was born in Dayton Ohio on June 22, 1872 to parents who had been enslaved prior to the civil war. Just about 3 years earlier Edward Arlington Robinson was born on December 22, 1869. His parents were very well off. There is so much to be said about the lives of these two great men and the things that they...

...com/grammar/writerworkshops/GFW8_WM_compare.pdf WHAT THIS HANDOUT IS ABOUT This handout will help you first to determine whether a particular assignment is asking for comparison/contrast and then to generate a list of similarities and differences, decide which similarities and differences to focus on, and organize your paper so that it will be clear and effective. It will also explain how you can (and why you should) develop a thesis that goes beyond “Thing A and Thing B are similar in many ways but different in others.” INTRODUCTION In your career as a student, you’ll encounter many different kinds of writing assignments, each with its own requirements. One of the most common is the comparison/contrast essay, in which you focus on the ways in which certain things or ideas—usually two of them—are similar to (this is the comparison) and/or different from (this is the contrast) one another. By assigning such essays, your instructors are encouraging you to make connections between texts or ideas, engage in critical thinking, and go beyond mere description or summary to generate interesting analysis: when you reflect on similarities and differences, you gain a deeper understanding of the items you are comparing, their relationship to each other, and what is most important about them. RECOGNIZING COMPARISON/CONTRAST IN ASSIGNMENTS Some assignments use words—like compare, contrast, similarities, and differences—that make it easy for you to see that they are asking you to compare...

Lastly, I am going to address the strategies that can be considered or developed to avoid vicarious traumatization. What is invidious comparison? Invidious comparison is the comparing yourself to others. It can be through race, sexual orientation, and religion. Invidious comparison can make a person feel that their self-worth is not wanted and even take its toll on the person doing the comparison themselves. It can send you into a depressive state where you develop levels of stress. To stop invidious comparison, we must first get an understanding on others and accept the different views that other may possess. Everyone is different in their own way. There will also be an individual that may excel in different things that you may have thought you were good in. Some may be incapable of abilities that one may have. By understanding these aspects we must acknowledge the strengths that we have and do not have without dwelling on the weaknesses of others. Everywhere we go there are comparisons, it is important...

Comparing/Contrasting

...Your goal is to write an essay showing how two subjects are either similar or different (not both). When comparing subjects, show how they are similar. When contrasting them, show how they are different. In a comparison/contrast paper, be sure to develop a thesis that includes words that signal comparisons, such as “although,” “even though,” “in spite of,” “except for,” “not withstanding,” or “but.” Also, use appropriate transitions to signal comparisons and link paragraphs within the body of your paper, such as “on the other hand,” “in contrast,” “similarly,” “also,” “both,” “even though,” and “in the same way.” In order for two things to be worth comparing, the two things should initially appear to be different. In order for two things to be worth contrasting, the two things should initially appear to be similar. Comparing and contrasting are ways of exploring the similarities and differences between two things. 'Compare and contrast' is often used as a development strategy for essay assignments but it's a helpful strategy for any important decisions you have to make. Generally speaking, comparing is showing the similarities, and contrasting is showing differences between two things that are related in some way. For example, you wouldn't compare/contrast reading a book to driving a car, but you would compare reading a book to reading with an e-reader. I can personally say that I have experienced both of them many times in my lifetime and still struggle with them to this day. In this paper I am going to explain how both of these can be damaging not only to you but to everyone who is involved. I’m going to talk about an event in my life that I have experienced, ways to stop invidious comparison, strategies that I personally use to avoid vicarious traumatization in my own life, and if those strategies will work to ensure that I will avoid vicarious traumatization as a human service worker, and what other strategies I could develop that would be helpful to avoid vicarious traumatization. Hair Fiber

...characteristics of hair differ in different parts of the body. If a person tries to compare head hair to pubic hair, for instance, a match will probably not be made. Most hair comparisons deal with either head or pubic hair. If collecting head hair, a typical sampling can usually by obtained with about 50 full-length hairs. Approximately two dozen full-length pubic hairs are needed for a good sample. It is necessary to collect the entire length of each strand of hair, because a hair can show variation in color or other physical characteristics throughout the strand. If the size or the length of each piece of hair falls below the minimum, it can be very difficult to form any connections based on the evidence. When collecting fibers, careful examination of all fiber carriers is imperative. It is important to have somebody at the scene to specifically look for fiber clues because this kind of evidence cannot be seen with the naked eye. Clothing that could contain fibers should be bagged separately in paper bags. Every item must be bagged separately to avoid the chance of cross-contaminating the evidence. Also all items such as carpets and bedding should be individually folded and packaged to protect fiber evidence. If a fiber must be removed, it should be removed with tongs and placed in a small sheet of paper. Once that has been folded and labeled, it should be put in another container for safekeeping. Failure...

...Personal Reflection Paper Nikia Crump BSHS 345 Seanee Alexander July 6, 2015 Introduction This paper will focus on a personal experience with vicarious traumatization as well as invidious comparison. Will focus on how to avoid vicarious traumatization in your personal/ work life and ways to strategize to avoid this. These will also be strategies that I use as a Human Service professional to avoid traumatiztion as well. How to Stop Invidious Comparison We have to realize that we are all different and no two people are the same in any way, but as humans we have a natural tendency to constantly compare ourselves to others that we may see on a daily basis or those that we see on television. It is normal to do this to merely evaluate the similarities and differences between yourself and others. In today’s society we have turned in to comparison junkies and this is something that starts at birth with comparing babies on who’s the cutest and then it just carries over throughout the years into adulthood. * We have to learn that comparing ourselves with others is a bad habit and is a sign of low self esteem. Today’s society does project flawlessness within everyone nowadays and that is an untruth, because no one is perfect. *Understanding that everybody is different because that’s just how we are and how we were meant to be. Everyone is born different even with twins, they may look alike, but they have different mindsets, different experiences, and...
