Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, put on by the Carey High School drama department, was well scripted, directed, and portrayed to say the least. From the moment I walked into the auditorium to watch the performance, I felt a strange atmosphere around me. However, I didn’t expect anything less; this was the last show ever in that auditorium before the school building got torn down. For anyone who graduated from Carey High School, the auditorium held some sort of significance to you. It was the place you had all your elementary programs, where you had all your sports banquets, where you were inducted into National Honor Society, where you were granted scholarships and other academic awards, where you performed all your band and choir concerts, …show more content…
It started with the fairy godmother, portrayed by the very talented and bubbly Sadie Vaughn, standing in a giant tree, singing the opening song and giving the opening monologue. The set behind her was hard to see from the dark, but I could see it was built like a village. It was for the next scene, where all the village people are shopping and mingling, the evil stepmother and sisters were shopping and arguing, and Cinderella and Christopher, AKA the prince, first meet. I felt as though this scene did a fantastic job of giving off that “normal day in the village” vibe. The characters were always busy doing something, so there was never a dull moment on stage. The next scene transitioned into Cinderella’s house, where the stepmother and stepsisters talked about their big plans for the ball and who they think the prince will choose as his bride. Meanwhile, Cinderella thinks she will be able to go, so she gets out her mother’s old dress and shows her stepmother. The stepmother, perfectly played by Savanna Day, then proceeds to tell her she is forbidden to go to the ball and rips her dress. Cinderella, played by the lovely Laila Gernert, goes on to sing her first solo ballad of the musical, and let me tell you, she has the voice of an angel. She perfectly balanced her tone and pitch with the choreography. The next few scenes go by in a quick blur, but with every passing song and scene, it puts you on the edge of …show more content…
The curtains opened up to the ballroom of the palace, and all of the guests are talking to each other and having a good time. The Royal Steward named Lionel, portrayed by Levi Hill with an accent just like Gilbert Gottfried, is at the top of the staircase, announcing ladies as they come into the room. When he gets to the stepsisters, he is hilariously horrified by the way they act and talk. Throughout the show, they have been shown as dumb girls who always have to try and be better than the other, and always mean to Cinderella. The chemistry between the stepsisters could be felt throughout the whole auditorium, but it’s hard not to when the two girls playing the stepsisters, Serenety Hooper and Katie Bash, are best friends in real life. Christopher, portrayed by Jack Yeater, goes around to every girl and starts dancing with them to try and get to know them each a little bit. When he gets to the sisters, they both make complete fools of themselves, but who would expect any less? The moment Cinderella appears at the top of the staircase was the most iconic moment of the whole performance. The lights went down and there was a single spotlight on her and the piano was playing very dramatic background music to set the mood. After that, the whole crowd on stage fanned out the sides of the stage, so it was only the two of them on stage, dancing to the song 10 Minutes Ago, which basically is the song they sing that was
