Daemon Targaryen, born eighty one years after Aegon's Conquest, was the son of Baelon Targaryen and grandson of King Jaeherys the Conciliator. His brother Viserys would later take the the Iron Throne after the ancient king died. Daemon was described as dashing, dangerous and easy to offend. His face was known to be familiar with every cut-purse, whore and gambler in Flea Bottom. He was knighted at 16 and given the Valyrian Steel sword, Dark Sister, by King Jaeherys himself. His first marriage was unfruitful. He detested his wife, Rhea Royce (calling her his 'bronze bitch'), and though Viserys did not allow him to divorce her, he was welcomed to the small council serving as both Master of Coin and Laws. The sun was setting, when, as one, both dragons leapt into the sky. Daemon took Caraxes up swiftly until they disappeared into a bank of clouds. Vhagar, older and slower, ascended more gradually. Up and up Vhagar soared, searching for Caraxes. Sudden as a thunderbolt, a shrieking Caraxes dove upon Vhagar. Locked together, the dragons tumbled toward the lake. Caraxes' jaw closed on Vhagar's neck, but Vhagar raked at Caraxes' belly and her teeth ripped off a wing. The Lake rushed up with terrible speed. Then Daemon Targaryen, who had never fastened his riding chains, stood in his saddle. He leapt from his dragon to Aemond's, and in his hand was Dark Sister. As Aemond One-Eye looked up in terror, Daemon ripped off his nephew's helm and drove his sword down into his one remaining eye so hard it came out of the back of the young prince's throat.
