Executive Summary The Myo Armband is a new, innovative product that will be targeted toward young adults, who are early adopters, and live in urban areas. The Myo Armband is an armband that goes on the forearm, which is a gesture–controlled device to communicate with other digital devices.
Existing Competitors include: 1. Leap Motion: A device that is designed with camera technology to identify finger and hand motions to control different computers. The product only works with a USB cord and is only compatible with computers with certain system requirements 2. Microsoft Kinect: A hands-free product that has infrared and camera technology to identify gestures and motions so the user can control Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Windows PC. It was designed for mostly gaming and application purposes.
A perceptual map comparing some features and benefits of these competitors with the Myo Armband is located on page 5 in the report.
Microsoft may be a potential competitor in the near future because they have a patent on a very similar product. Other than the sophisticated technology to create a similar device, there are few barriers to enter the market.
Myo has a competitive advantage. Myo Armband is compatible with more of today’s popular products and uses muscle activity technology, unlike its competitors.
Competitive Analysis
Product Description The Myo Armband is a gesture controlled armband that can be used with many technological devices. It was created by Thalmic Labs to help enhance consumers’ experiences with technology. This device comes with full software support to help link the product with many other popular devices using Bluetooth 4.0 technology. The Myo Armband uses electromyography and spatial sensors to detect and sense the electrical activity from the forearm muscles and the motions it makes to transmit the information and communicate with many digital devices. Also, it comes with a Micro-USB built-in rechargeable battery to make sure the product will stay on for long periods of time. The Myo Armband is the first product and technology of its kind that will help improve and integrate many other digital devices that many consumers already use today.
Existing Competition This product does not have a huge amount of competition because it uses such new, innovative technology that the public has not experienced before. However, there are some similar products that might still compete within the same market as the Myo Armband because of their similarities. One competitor, that is the most similar to Myo, is Leap Motion. This product is a USB wired device that is designed to be placed on a desktop, facing upwards, to communicate with a computer using hand and finger motions. It allows the user to control and communicate with their computer without a mouse or keyboard by using optical sensors and cameras to identify motions of the user from about one meter away. Leap Motion is compatible with Windows 7 or 8 or Mac OS C 10.7 Lion, that uses a USB 2.0 port, and it is necessary to have internet connection to be able to integrate the device with a computer. The product is only about three inches long and it has a sleek, light design. Another product that may be a competitor with the Myo Armband is Microsoft Kinect. This technology is also a motion sensing device, which allows consumers to interact with their Xbox 360, Xbox One, or Windows PC. The Kinect uses camera and infrared technology to communicate with those Microsoft products from the motions and gestures of the user. Also, the product has a built-in microphone to operate with voice-recognition technology. It is designed to sit still on its base, which has a motorized pivot system, in order to observe the surroundings and communicate mostly with games and other applications.
Threat of New Entrants One major potential competitor with Myo is Microsoft. Not only does Microsoft currently develop a competing product, in the Kinect, but the company could definitely produce a product that could be very similar to the Myo Armband in the near future. Currently, Microsoft has a filed patent for an armband that is motion and gesture-controlled. If Myo Armband is successful in the current market, then Microsoft may see a better reason to enter the same market by producing a device that may be almost identical. This may be a problem if Myo Armband does not initially establish a large market share and customer brand loyalty with the product because Microsoft has much greater brand recognition with the public, which could have a negative impact on the Myo Armband. Other than Microsoft, it may be unlikely that there are many other companies willing or able to enter the market in the near future for hands-free gesture controlled technology because the technology of the Myo Armband is so innovative and advanced it would be difficult to effectively replicate and sell to consumers. Even though the technology may be hard to replicate, the barriers to entry do not seem very high because the technology of the Myo Armband is not yet patented. This could make threats high because the barriers are fairly low in the current market.
Competitive Advantage This new product utilizes very unique and sophisticated technology that many other products do not have in the current market. The Leap Motion and the Microsoft Kinect are both similar products that may be competitors, but the Myo Armband has the competitive advantage in several ways. This product can be integrated with many more of today’s popular devices. All the device needs is Bluetooth, in order to connect with Myo. Leap can only pair with computers with specific system requirements, and the Kinect can only be used for the Xbox360, Xbox One, and Windows PC for mostly only gaming and applications purposes. The Myo armband can be used for many different purposes with many different devices, which can make various tasks much more convenient to the consumer. Another reason why the Myo Armband has an advantage over its competitors is that it is more portable than its competitors because it goes around the user’s forearm, whereas the other products are both stationary devices that are made to sit and observe your actions. Also the product uses muscle- controlled technology to communicate with digital devices, as well as gesture controls. Neither the Kinect nor Leap Motion use muscle- controlled technology, which allows Myo to more effectively enhance the consumer’s experience with technology
