Most of us know or have at least heard about the phrase 'computer addiction'. The media usually throw it around whenever a shocking story like the ones above surface. Naturally it has become a hot topic of debate. Some support computer addiction as a legitimate idea and are for its recognition as a mental disorder. However, others argue that it is merely a form of escapism from an intense physiological issue. A computer is a general purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a set of arithmetic or logical operations automatically. Since a sequence of operations can be readily changed, the computer can solve more than one kind of problem. ...ago, the only people who spent a majority of their leisure time on the computer were paid members of the technology industry. Today, however, surfing the Web has become a pastime as social and marketable as bar hopping or going to the movies. As the web has become a part of mainstream life, some mental health professionals have noted that a percentage of people using the web do so in a compulsive and out-of-control manner. In one extreme (1997) Cincinnati case, unemployed mother Sandra Hacker allegedly spent over 12 hours a day secluded from her three young and neglected children while she surfed the Web. For better or for worse, this phenomena of compulsive Internet use has been termed 'Internet Addiction' based on its superficial similarity to common addictions such as smoking, drinking, and gambling. Internet Addiction has even been championed as an actual disorder, notably by psychologists Kimberly Young, Ph.D and David Greenfield, Ph.D.. However, at this time the true nature of Internet Addiction is not yet determined. In a true addiction, a person becomes compulsively dependent upon a particular kind of stimulation to the point where obtaining a steady supply of that stimulation becomes the sole and central focus of their lives. The addict increasingly neglects his work duties, relationships and ultimately even his health in his drive to remain stimulated. In some cases of addiction (such as addiction to alcohol or to heroin), a phenomenon known as tolerance occurs, wherein...

...Discussion 9 Discussion 10 References 11 References 12 Introduction The dawn of the computer and internet access has passed, and the world-wide-web is accessible to over 2 billion global users. This access has, in the last 10 years, increased fourfold (see footnote for website details that evidence growth) and become abundantly available through the wireless revolution of appliances; whereby mobile internet use has developed and grossly contributed towards the mass global access and usage of the internet. The convenience and portability of such technology means that there is also an increased awareness into the associated pathologies that one may encounter- whereby negative compared to positive consequences resulting from excessive computer use have been highlighted on opposite sides of the spectrum. This expansion, which is exponential and has momentum, should be examined from both perspectives; both positive and negative. There are undoubtedly numerous benefits of having such a wealth of information and knowledge at ones disposal. However, reports of detrimental psychological and even physiological outcomes have been well evidenced and supported by current and archived research. Cumulatively the evidence is concerning and further study which examines possible contributions of IA may facilitate awareness and provide caution towards an individuals’ time spent online. ...lead author of the article, Dr. Elias Aboujaoude, director of the Impulse Control Disorders Clinic at Stanford University's school of medicine, told TechNewsWorld. Need Their Net Through a random-digit-dial telephone survey of 2,513 adults in the United States, the Stanford team found that of the almost 70 percent of respondents who were Internet users, 13.7 percent found it hard to stay away from the Net for more than several days at a time. That number is higher than that seen in prior research on the problem, according to Hilarie Cash, co-founder of Internet/Computer Addiction Services in Redmond, Wash. "Earlier research had shown about six percent of the population struggling with this," she told TechNewsWorld. The researchers also discovered that 8.7 percent of Web users in the survey attempted to conceal non-essential Internet use from family, friends and employees. "One sign of addiction is secrecy, hiding, lying about it," Cash observed. Disorder or Symptom? Now that they've unearthed significant signs of problematic use of the Internet by a significant proportion of Netsters, the researchers said more inquiry must be performed to hash out whether Internet addition is an independent disorder or the symptom of other psychopathologies. "If it's a symptom of other disorders, such as depression, then treating those disorders should help treat the Internet behavior,"...

With most things in life, there are disadvantages. Computer technology has shown that there are many disadvantages in using this device. Computer addiction, an ongoing problem, causes problems such as addictive behavior, obsession and multitasking dilemmas. What are the disadvantages of using the Internet? The internet teaches us how to interact with people and places all over the world. There are downfalls to this convenience that we are not told about beforehand. Some of these downfalls occur as psychological disorders, addictions, obsessions and in multitasking. Computer addiction is an ongoing problem in 2015. We need to find a solution. Computer addiction fits the definition of a psychological disorder, a psychological disorder of thought or emotion, a more neutral term than mental illness. For example, Sharon Jayson in her article in USA Today refers to experts who think technology is “rewiring our brains.” Psychological disorders like anxiety, narcissism, addictions and compulsive behaviors that people have are due to excessive computer use. Mary Sykes Wiley, agreeing with Jayson, states that being on the computer is like Cybercoke. It’s an instant high, zooming from link to link. Emily Listfield also uses Jayson’s same words to indicate that the computer internet may even be “rewiring...

...Chapter II History of Computer Addiction Computer addiction was noticed in 1973 in some people. The addiction is a mental illness which causes the excessive use of computers to the extent of it interfering with daily life. Its excessive use may also explain problems in social interaction, personality, mood, work ethic and relationships. Effects of Computer Addiction to Students Computer addiction can have a variety of negative effects on a person. The most immediate are social. The user withdraws from friends and family as he spends more and more time on the computer. Relationships begin to wither as the user stops attending social gatherings, skips meetings with friends and avoids family members to get more computer time. Even when they do interact with their friends, users may become irritable when away from the computer, causing further social harm. Excessive computer use can take an emotional toll. The user gradually withdraws into an artificial world. Constant computer gaming can cause someone to place more emotional value on events within the game than things happening in their real lives. Excessive viewing of Internet pornography can warp a person's ideas about sexuality. Someone whose primary friends are screen names in a chat room may have difficulty with face-to-face interpersonal communication. It is known that we are living in technological era. ...COMPUTER ADDICTION By: Remelyn B. Villanueva I. ABSTRACT Computer games have become an ever-increasing part of many adolescents' day-to-day lives. Coupled with this phenomenon, reports of excessive gaming (computer game playing) denominated as "computer/video game addiction" have been discussed in the popular press as well as in recent scientific research. The aim of the present study was the investigation of the addictive potential of gaming as well as the relationship between excessive gaming and aggressive attitudes and behavior. A sample comprising of 7069 gamers answered two questionnaires online. Data revealed that 11.9% of participants (840 gamers) fulfilled diagnostic criteria of addiction concerning their gaming behavior, while there is only weak evidence for the assumption that aggressive behavior is interrelated with excessive gaming in general. Results of this study contribute to the assumption that also playing games without monetary reward meets criteria of addiction. Hence, an addictive potential of gaming should be taken into consideration regarding prevention and intervention. The popularity of computer games has attracted the attention of educationalists who are interested in finding out whether the features that make them so engaging could be captured and used to help people learn more effectively. In this paper we examine the relevance of computer games to Higher Education, reporting on a survey of University students’ computer games behaviours, their...

It is impossible to believe to do anything without the Internet, especially from the youth’s perspective. Youths today spend too much time on the computer, surfing the Internet for hours. Some have become much too addicted and don’t realize that they actually suffer from Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD). Let’s have a look at how computers directly have effects upon youths nowadays. One of the main consequences of spending too much time on the computer that youths are likely to disregard is personal neglect. When one is too obsessed with surfing the Internet, they tend to pay no attention to their standard of living apart from the computer which they are using. Some may not take bath, clean their room, or eat well as they are much too focused on what they are doing virtually. Because of the long hours spent engaged with a computer, youths often have eating irregularities, such as skipping meals or overeating. This indirectly leads to health disorders, for instance, malnutrition of the youth’s body. Isolation, avoidance and no family bonding at all is another outcome which happens in a youth’s life when they get excessively addicted with the Internet. Because of spending too much time on the computer, youths have a propensity to reduce socializing with others. They tend to feel that computer is the only form of...
