...Computer Literacy and Numeracy Module Photoshop Exercise Image 1: [pic] This graphic (Image 1) displays how the citizens of Urbania are attempting to pass their garbage problems onto other smaller municipalities. Specifically, this image shows a citizen of Urbania sweeping his garbage “under the rug” of the rural towns in a very care free manner. The citizen himself is extremely large compared to the rural areas; this symbolizes the helplessness of the smaller rural towns to stop the big city. This graphic was created using a combination of several borrowed images and free-hand computer drawn pictures. I borrowed the image of the man from a website on the internet. He was originally black and white, using both arms to sweep and facing the opposite direction (See Image 2). Image 2: [pic] Using Paint Shop Pro I erased the litter and one of his arms. I then selected and copied his remaining arm, pasted it and rotated it into the upward position. I then coloured the image and horizontally mirrored it. Next I hand drew the hills of Ruralia, the trees and the houses. I further created the cities sign and rotated the text “RURALIA” to match the angle of the sign. I then found a picture of the Dallas, Texas skyline (Image 3), which was chosen for its lack of defining features, and opened it in Photoshop. Image 3: [pic] I used the crop tool to select the portion of the image I wanted to use and then used the artistic filter “Cutout” on the image...

...Computer Literacy Windows 8 vs. Windows 7 In this paper I will be comparing and contrasting Windows 8 and Windows 7. Windows 8 is latest Microsoft operating system that has been installed on all the new Windows computers since the year 2012. The main differences between Windows 8 and Windows 7 are: When you log in to Windows 8, the first screen you see is the new ‘Start Screen’, also known as ‘Metro’. It still has the familiar ‘Desktop’ as well but we’ll come to that in a minute. Instead of Icons, the new Start screen has ‘Tiles’. You click these to open your ‘Apps’ (short for Applications). If you can’t find a particular tile, do a right mouse click in the space at the bottom of the screen and click All Apps .In Windows 8 we can use apps and programs. Apps open full screen in Metro; programs open on the Desktop just as they did in Windows 7. Additional apps can be downloaded from the Windows Store. Windows 8 comes with an anti virus program called ‘Defender’. Apps don’t have to be closed by clicking a X in the corner – instead, just press the Windows key on your keyboard to return to the Start Screen. Optionally, an app can be closed by dragging it down from the top of the screen with your mouse, with the left button held down – or with your finger if you are using a touchscreen. Windows 8 doesn’t have a Start Menu. Instead, it has a ‘Charms Bar’ (see right) which is where you go to shut down and use other tools such as ‘Search’. Whereas in Windows 7 you might have used...

It has nurtured some of the most ancient civilizations of this continent. The young country came into existence after a blood-spattered liberation war in 1971. But the pace of growth and development has been impeded by many factors. Bangladesh, as a Least Developing Country (LDC), faces a reputation challenge which is popularly known as its image problem. Bangladesh has gained the image of a country with too many people, too much poverty, too little resources, too frequent disasters and too little ability to change for better. Recently poor law and order, bad investment climate and Islamic terrorism have killed its image more. To remove all the negative aspects and image surrounding Bangladesh and to make it as a beautiful and prospective country it is highly recommended to branding Bangladesh. ...INTRODUCTION Computer Literacy Computer literacy is defined as the knowledge and ability to use a computer and related technology efficiently, with a range of skills covering levels from elementary use to programming and problem solving. Computer literacy can also refer to the comfort someone has with using the computer and other applications that are associated with the computer. Arthur Luehrmann was one of the first to popularize the term computer literacy, when in 1972, he realized the important role that it would play in the educational environment ( Moursund, 2003). Computers are everywhere, our home, work, and schools. When I think about it my nieces know how to use them better than I do. With everyone having access to a computer these days, you can’t help but wonder if everyone is playing nice. Cyber Bullying is a serious issue in today‘s school and business I think this problem can be solved if people are educated on Netiquette, when cyber bulling happens it is important to document and report the behavior so it can be addressed. Something else we need to think about is making sure our online students are not ‘’flaming each other in a way that can cause damage. Flaming, this is a term that describes an increasingly intense and vicious debates. One way to handle this problem is for instructors to monitor classroom discussion board, and if it appears that a discussion is headed in that direction, simply stop it. Socially we love the computer to chat...

...Jake Andryshak Jerry Tartaglia English 101 November 12, 2013 The Decline in Literacy The decline of literacy has been something that has changed over time. Words used in the past may not show up in today’s vocabulary. Historical events will impact the writings and the verbal words during that time. Literacy will change according to time eras and with what is going on during that time. Through history the way people spoke to one another and the way they wrote has changed. During the civil war era, people wrote differently. They used a different assortment of words. People back then had a diverse vocabulary that people today do not use. The language and literacy has been molded as each decade past. Events in history have impacted the way people speak and write to one another. During the 50s America was coming off of the Great Depression. Times were pretty great, it seemed like there was an abundance of money. People were living the American Dream. This was the era of the movie “Grease”, with John Travolta. People had their clicks like they do today but each click resembled a gang. People had different words that meant the same thing, for example the word ‘chick’ was used in place of girl. The word ‘bread’ is not the eatable cooked wheat, it actually meant money in the 1950s. In the 1960s, during the decade of the hippies, the meanings of some words changed. When someone said ‘that’s boss’, it meant something that was the best of or something that was great. During the...

...ADULT LITERACY EDUCATION IN NIGERIA AND THE USE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1. The need for adult literacy education in Nigeria cannot be over-emphasized. In the context of global economy and competitive markets, adult literacy is a key factor contributing to economic development. In all countries of the world, adults constitute a larger proportion of the work force. Therefore, human resource development through adult literacy education has become a key component within the overall strategy for economic restructuring both in the developed and developing countries. The future of global economy and democratic polity in the twenty-first century is likely to depend on skilled, educated, and enlightened adult citizens. It was the World Conference on Education for All, held in Jomtien, (Thailand) in 1990 that highlighted the critical importance of addressing the learning needs of adults. In the context of globalization, basic learning skills and competencies are necessary not only for children, but also for adults, who are valuable human resources of every society. The new technological developments in information and Communication technologies (ICTs), such as satellite radio and television broadcasting, long distance telephony, computers and telecommunications have dramatically expanded our options for engaging in learning and teaching at the individual, community and societal levels. The hallmark of ICTs is their distributive power and...

...Sponsors and Socioeconomic Status Socioeconomic status most of the time paves the way for the degree of literacy abilities someone will acquire throughout their life. It has a tremendous impact on how a person’s reading/writing identity is formed. This is largely due to the fact that there are different standards of literacy sponsors for each socioeconomic class, as well as accessibility. The writing we do can take many different forms that represent different extensions of ourselves. We are able to adapt our writing to our surroundings, just like we can adapt our identity to fit certain people or scenarios. Writing is situational and writing helps shape ideologies and ideologies make up part of someone’s identity. Literacy sponsors...

...globally-competitive and productive citizens. To achieve this, one of the best ways to build a strong foundation of technological literacy is to implement the use of digital media in schools to assist the teaching-and-learning process. Technology in classroom serves as a great partner of teachers to deliver a complete package of standard teaching. Learning process equipped with various visual media incorporated in lessons are much likely to awaken the learners’ interests to get involved than that of dominated by traditional way of teaching in which the center of information source are the teachers themselves. Gone were the days where Filipino children read passages from the back of used calendars. Teachers are also challenged at the same time that since one of the goals is to produce learners who will be able to respond to the current demands of the market, they must be very careful in using technology in teaching and bring out the best of it and ensure that this technique will heighten the learners’ skills and abilities. Moreover, technology in classroom is as much helpful to learners. With this, the first graders in school become oriented at their young age of different forms in technology which include computers and visual media. As K-12 learners, it will also be a requirement for them since the workforce nowadays demands for an individual to be literate in computers and other technological tools for them to pass the standards of employers. By introducing more technology in schools...

...the sustainable literacy mastery of one generation to the next generation. Literacy is really needed to speed up the development or the progress of a country especially in this era of globalization in which technology advance and rapid economic development requires everyone to be competent and to have good skills. Everyone should be literate and be able to read or write at least. In line of this, Hussain (2005) said: “Access to quality literacy learning opportunities and the development of literate environments are essential components of strategies for poverty reduction, equality, economic development and environmental protection, and for achieving democracy. Literacy is a fundamental human right and a prerequisite to the empowerment of the individual and development of society”. It is fully essential to social and human development in its ability to transform lives. For individuals, families, and societies alike, it is an instrument of empowerment to improve one’s health, one’s income, and one’s relationship with the world. Literacy education is one of important aspects which should be applied in order to foster an interest and latent talent in order to get that empowerment of the individual and development of society. Through informal or formal education at school, students especially can know how to read and write well. When they know how to read, they are expected to possess good knowledge by reading books or many other medias such as internet. Literacy is not obtained...

...stomach” Part-3 once again. Not for me, hah.. am talking about my parents. God knows why they took so much of tension about my exams. I had warned my parents of Diabetes and Ulcers way back, but they would never listen. I even asked them to emulate my carefree attitude when it came to exams, but they were one ignorant lot who would not heed good advice. Anyways, I was cool as a cucumber, because this time I had decided that it would not be the Season Three of some failed daily soap. I had made all fool-proof arrangements to pass this time. My dedication, patience, perseverance and persistence would definitely see me through my exams this time around. Day in and day out, I had sacrificed all my useless activities that kept me unduly busy; computer games, movies, parties, discos.. everything! I gave up everything as soon as the exam time table was announced. All my energy and efforts were now aimed at one single objective: getting the question paper somehow!! Patience is always rewarded, so are genuine efforts and dedication. I was lucky enough to discover a gem of a person in one of my class-mates, whom I revered as my senior, coz he had failed thrice in the same exam. He would have made one hell of a statesman beating even Dr. Kissinger I must say. Well, coming back to our topic, he was generous enough to share that highly secret piece of information, though for a paltry fee, which unfortunately was monumental for a person like me. Robbing a bank would have been an easier option...

...Why is Visual Literacy Important? Traci Sizemore CGD 218 Visual Literacy in Business Stephen Simmons September 3, 2012 Why is Visual Literacy so Important? The ability to understand visual literacy you must be able to see your world, but is it the ability to just see things around you the clear definition of visual literacy? Of course not, it is much more than just being able to see. We will review the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) definition versus the information provided in a video “TedTalk” by Brian Kennedy, director of the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, how visual literacy is a universal language and finally how it impacts communication and global understanding. The International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) definition of what visual literacy is A group of vision-related competencies a human being can develop by seeing, and at the same time, having and integrating other sensory experiences. [These competencies] enable a visually literate person to discriminate and interpret the visible actions, objects, and symbols that he [or she] encounters . . . to communicate with others . . . and comprehend and enjoy visual communication. (International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA, n.d.) (Ryan, 2012). This definition is stating that one should see the object but be able to critically think about the object. By critically thinking about the object we can view the object; understand and interpret it. When we...
