Concept maps require students to identify, organize, and interpret key information in order to establish relationships between content (Davis, 2009). Davis (2009) explains that studies show that students who use concept maps achieve at higher levels and retain information longer. It makes sense that any strategy that requires the student to synthesize and interpret information in order to recognize relationships would increase engagement with the actual content of a lesson leading to retained learning.
An advantage of any teaching strategy is students retaining the information taught. Another advantage, as explained by Bradshaw & Hultquist (2017), is that concept mapping allows students to envision client care or situations in a holistic manner by making connections and enhancing the ability to determine relationships. In nursing, this is an essential quality to be able to tie the theory learned to the practical setting when caring for patients. Furthermore, anytime students can engage and immerse themselves in the content, the more applicable that it will be for them. …show more content…
Concept mapping can also be time-consuming, overwhelming, and a large project. I find it interesting that Davis (2009) points out that even though students understand and appreciate the value of concept mapping, they do not tend to adopt this strategy into their own studying.
I do not recall a time in school when I completed a concept map. However, I have been out of nursing school for 14 years so many teaching strategies have changed or I simply just do not remember all of the strategies and assignments that I completed. In my current classroom, I have never used concept mapping, however, I have used mind mapping, which is a similar concept. Mind mapping has been successful for me in engaging and motivating the students to participate in their personal goal

In concept maps, concepts are depicted as labeled nodes, and relationships between concepts as labeled links.
