On Monday, September 29 I went to the Faculty Artist Concert Series on campus. This particular concert was titled “Faculty Showcase”, obviously that means throughout the concert, the faculty at the University of Indianapolis would showcase their particular strengths. The concert was in fact free and open to the public and everyone on campus. I earned L/P credit from attending which meant there were several other students there. The concerts on Monday nights usually only provide four, five or six pieces. All of those pieces are centralized by a theme to govern the concert. Because this concert was a Showcase for the faculty, they got to choose the pieces despite a theme to observe. Therefore, there was a diverse spectrum in the age and genre of all the pieces. In this concert, there were four pieces each representing one or multiple members of the faculty. Each of the pieces were very different in tone, structure, instrumentation and style.
The faculty who represented the university was Nemanja Ostoich (guitar), Peter Hansen (double bass), Gregory Martin (piano), Kathleen Hacker (soprano), Tamara Thweatt (flute and alto flute), Larry Powell and Vu Nguyen (trumpet), Darin Sorely (French horn), Blake Schlabach (trombone), and finally Glen Dimick (tuba). Most of the performers were dressed in black. The men either did not wear a tie or wore a solid colored neutral tie. The two women involved in the concert were both wearing a long dark skirt and a dark professional top. Neither of their shirts were solid black but both looked professional. Each member of the faculty were poised and very professional on stage. It was easy to tell they were enjoying playing their instruments. No one on stage looked unpleasant, just happy to be there and happy to play. This behavior was easily transferred and represented in the music. These talented musicians prepared four works to present, Un Sueńo en la Floresta (Agustín Barrios), Variations a Theme from Rossini’s “Moses in Egypt” (Niccolò Paganini), Backyard Songs (Don Freund), from Suite Americana “Ragtime, Val Peruano, Son de Mexico” (Enrique Crespo) and Go!! (Anthony DiLorenzo). I will choose two of the pieces that I really enjoyed to describe.
The first piece was titled Un Sueño en la Floresta, written by Agustìn Barrios. This piece was written for solo guitar and performed by Nemanja Ostoich. My initial reaction to the piece was peaceful and clearly Latin. I mentioned to the person next to me that it felt like a Latin lullaby. Throughout most the piece Ostoich played towards the center of the neck, which suggests a medium range for the piece. There were several times where he went higher and lower but Ostoich mainly stayed towards the center. From listening I noticed Ostoich played the entire piece from memory, which only heightened his ability to express emotion throughout the piece. The melody was conjunct with chromatic scales moving up and down throughout the bar. Ostoich was very successful in expressing the dynamics of the pieces. Doing so he again was able to express emotion at a more successful rate. Once the harmony was added to the piece, Ostoich played both melody and harmony on the guitar. In this piece, the harmony was a rhythmic passage that was played in repetition to embellish the melody. I enjoyed this piece because Ostoich put so much emotion into it, it was impossible not the feel the music. I also enjoyed the restful lullaby tone throughout the entire piece. Similar to the next piece, Un Sueño en la Floresta was a crowd pleasure at this concert.
Go by Anthony DiLorenzo is a whirlwind of a piece. By the title, I can tell it is a whirl wind for any of the brass players. The piece was written and performed for brass quintet. The performers sat in a square type formation, similar to an upside down “U”. One the left sat trumpet II and horn. Then at the top of the “U” sat the tuba player. And finally on the right side from front to back was trumpet I and trombone. To start the very fast paced piece, trumpet I gave prep with his breathe and the horn and everyone came in appropriately. The initial impression of the work is very energetic. Go is mix metered, conjunct, and intense. Many of the accents throughout the piece are is miscellaneous places throughout the measure, this gives the piece a quick up beat pace. I noticed about halfway through the piece that the horn player has taken maybe one bar off to rest. The tonality of the work has a wide range and includes several sections of multiple tonguing. The trumpets and trombones have run after run after run of conjunct phrases that just keep leading towards the end of the piece. I really enjoyed the energy and depth the piece had. In several parts of the piece there were moments of polyphony and moments of monophony. Within those melodies there were lines of staccato mixed with marcato articulations, which emphasized the driving and intense feel.
I think my favorite part of this particular concert was the brass quintet. I may be biased as a horn player, but overall they were the most exciting to watch and listen to. Overall, I enjoyed the concert as a whole. Usually I am more interested in full orchestra performances, which play more classical works. However, I was pleased with the repertoire on this concert. At the end of the day, I always have a good time listening to music in concert halls.

I played in two of these groups, which were the brass choir and the symphonic band. The brass choir played three numbers and the last one was the most significant to the crowd. We played the theme song from Looney Tunes, which almost the entire crowd recognized. It was interesting to see the crowd reactions after the piece. Not only was there applause but laughter as well due to the enjoyment of hearing this very old theme song. The VVC Symphonic Band performed last and played six different numbers. We opened with a face pace song known as Magnificent Seven. It was a good opener and a fast tempo to set the mood for the rest of the performance. But out of all the pieces the most interesting and difficult one was Festive Overture that was written by Shostakovich. Festive Overture is a mixture of a fast and slow piece together, and it is one of the most difficult songs we have played. However, the crowd seemed to like this one the most, as it was the fastest paced piece. After the piece was over, the crowd gave a standing ovation to the Shostakovich piece and were applauding wildly. They had very much enjoyed the concert and Festive Overture in particular. Alltel Pavilion

...ISSUES IN ACCOUNTING EDUCATION Vol. 19, No. 4 November 2004 pp. 555–565 The ALLTEL Pavilion Case: Strategy and CVP Analysis Edward Blocher and Kung H. Chen ABSTRACT: The ALLTEL Pavilion case is intended for the undergraduate management accounting or cost accounting course and the M.B.A. management accounting course. It provides an excellent context in which to examine strategic issues in using cost volume profit (CVP) in a service business. Based on an actual entertainment pavilion, the case develops many factors unique to a service business and illustrates how pavilion management can use CVP analysis to determine which artists to attract and what kinds of contracts to have with these performers. The Pavilion has two types of customers (paying ticket holders and free ticket holders) and earns profits from three types of revenues (ticket revenues, concession revenues, and parking fees). The case requires you to identify the best strategy for different types of artists, conduct cost-volume-profit analyses, consider the strategic issues related to operating leverage and how this affects the choice of performer and contract, and assess pricing strategies. O ne day in early November, Pam Berg, Manager of the ALLTEL Pavilion, was reviewing the operating results for the year just completed in preparation for the executive board meeting the following Friday. While the year ended in the black, she was disappointed that the ALLTEL Pavilion failed to earn the budgeted...

The website for the event is http://www.earthday.org/globalcitizen2015earthday 2. This event was a free concert to support and promote Earth day around the world. There were over 30 activist and celebrities who were there to advocate taking action against the deforestation of the rainforest, climate change, and reducing our carbon footprint. The event, which was located in front of the Washington Monument on the national mall, was a political rally as well as a concert to support change and environmental awareness. The performances ranged from Hip-Hop to R&B to Pop music from artist such as Fall Out Boy, Train, Usher, Common, Mary J. Blige, and No Doubt. 3. My reason for choosing this event was that the topics of discussion on the global environment are extremely important. Unless we reduce our carbon foot print, we may not have a planet to pass down to the next generation. Another reason was for the actually concert venue itself. A ticket to an event which showcases all of these performers would have cost well over $150 dollars. I was able to attend for free and have a picnic under the cherry blossom trees as the musician’s played their ballads. 4. The setting was outside right on the front lawn of the Washington Monument. The weather was actually superb since there was no rain...

...Concert Report 1 I attended the Musica Viva string quartet on Sunday February 23, 2014. The Quartet included Susan Doering and Daniel Jang on the violins, Claudia Shiuh on the viola, and Dieter Wuldhorst on the violoncello. This concert was made possible by the Friends of Orpheus and is dependent entirely on donations The concert hall was quite small and seated about 200. Attending the concert was about 65 people. That consisted of children, students, and older community members. When I came into the hall the lights were on in the entire hall. As I began to sit down the lights started to dim. Excluding the stage where a light was laminated the four seats for the quartet. The director came in and began to introduce the quartet as to give a little detail on the program. The director excited the stage and the quartet entered. As they took their seats they began to tune there instrument’s. There first selection was Aaron Coplands Two Pieces. It was a very soft relaxing piece. Susan Doering took the position of first violin. Her movements were very soft and graceful. The harmony was consonance and made a feeling of being relaxed and sad at the same time. There next piece was Phillip Glass string quartet No. 5. I have to say that the pace was just a little faster. In this piece I really enjoyed the plucking of the strings. It made the piece fun and light. At the same time it was so relaxing to sit there and listen to. It almost put me to sleep. Thank goodness for brief intermission...

...Courteney Lodato McKenzie Wohlfarth Famine in Africa English 102 Baker College Famine in Africa Does music have the ability to impact listeners socially? Yes, music impacts listeners socially by adding meaning and themes to their lyrics. Artists can write music about anything that they want, which can include social issues around the world. Music that includes social issues can inspire people and give them the motivation to try and do something about the issue. “We Are The World”, by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie, impacted listeners because it addressed very real issues that the African continent was experiencing. Specifically, the lyrics bring awareness of hunger and poverty as results of the drought. In the 1980’s the continent of Africa was going through troubling times. The continents population was projecting at shocking numbers, degrading ecologically, and plummeting into debt. A rapidly growing population is a long term problem that is faced by any continent that can not sustain a good quality of life. The rate of death in Africa slowed, and the fertility rate increased. The average amount of children per mother is estimated at 6.2. Couples are getting married at younger ages which is slowly raising the statistic. The physical resources in Africa in the 1980’s where degrading due to eroding soil, falling water tables, and dying forests. With no land there is no food to grow, starving the population. ...Kim, Hyoungjoo MU106-M03 November 27 2013 Concert Report for My Music Class I attended the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s “Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto “on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. The hall was much more magnificent than I expected. In addition, the deep hum of a thousand voices work up the excitement of me, I’m not a big fan of classical music concerts though at the entrance. At the beginning of the concert, the orchestra who is armed with tuxedos and full dress was seated on the stage. The concertmaster came out to tune the orchestra, and then the conductor made his entrance. They performed music from Hungary, Germany and Russia. Zoltán Kodály’s Dances of Galanta is the Hungarian work and Tchaikovsky’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 1 is the Russian piece. In addition, they explained these make significant use of folk music, adapting them in individual and compelling ways. By contrast, Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 4, which we hear before intermission, is more in keeping with the Viennese symphonic tradition. The combination of an abstract Germanic formal model with more geographically focused musical content gives this concert its profile. First, Zoltán Kodály’s Dances of Galanta opens with a cello melody with strong dotted rhythm. After that by the strings, they played the same theme by French horn, and then passed around the orchestra. The next, played clarinet soloist it was brief cadenza before...

The show was on Friday November 19th, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. The concert first featured the Latin Jazz Ensemble of Mt. Sac. Followed by the Latin Jazz Ensemble was the Mt. Sac Jazz Ensemble 1. The concert was directed by Jeff Ellwood and Tim Curle. The first piece played by the Mt. Sac Jazz Ensemble was called “Intersecting Lines” which was composed by Les Hooper. After warming the audience up with that piece, they went on to play “True North” by Mike Dana. Next the Ensemble played “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” by Irving Berlin. The last piece the Latin Jazz Ensemble played was “Too High,” composed by Stevie Wonder, which I thought was pretty interesting. After a short intermission the Mt.Sac Jazz Ensemble came out and started off with “Hot and Spicey,” by Jason Goldman. The second song they played was called “Count Me In” by Billy Byers. Next they played “D-Bop” played in D-Flat I believe, and it was said to be a difficult piece for the ensemble, but they still mastered it. After “D-Bop” the piece called “Truth” was played which featured a solo piece from a talented saxophone player. Then they played “And Another Thing,” which is composed by Tom Garling. The last piece played was called “Yes or No,” and this was composed by Wayne Shortner. Jazz music started towards the beginning of the 20th century. ...
