On the night of October 14, 2007, I attended my first concert. It was held at 6 o’clock p.m. on the Bluff at Henry George Park in Fairhope, AL. The concert was sponsored by the City of Fairhope and the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation. The concert featured music from the late Classical Era, the Romantic Era and the 20th Century Era. The Pops Band performed under conductors Randy Davis and Dr. Roger Jones.

The first two selections, The Star Spangled Banner and Strike Up the Band were both played in quadruple meter. Randy Davis conducted both pieces. The Star Spangled Banner was a bold and energetic arrangement. There were very few changes in dynamics. In Strike Up the Band there was a lot of energy. The trumpets, piccolo and snare drums had solos. The tempo changed many times during the piece. It started fast and bold then it slowed slightly in the middle and the ending was the same as the beginning.

Nobles of the Mystic Shrine brought us Dr. Roger Jones as the conductor. This piece had a Turkish sound and was played in duple meter. There were piccolo and trumpet solos and an overall fast tempo.

The fourth arrangement played was, A tribute to Stephen Foster, that was played in quadruple meter. There was a trumpet, flute, horn, and drum quartette that introduced a quick tempo and a loud opening. In the middle the tempo slowed and there is a huge change in dynamics. Where the piece started loud and bold it became soft and light. This section had horn solos, flute solos, and oboe solos. A timpani roll increases the sound and leads to another oboe solo. The piece, which is a collection of many “folk songs” put together ended as it began loud and bold.

Next we heard Country Gardens which is an English Folk Song written by Percy Granger. Granger wrote the piece as a piano and oboe duet. John Philip Sousa heard it and arranged it into the military type version that was played. This was played in quadruple meter. There was a moderate tempo that stayed constant, but the dynamics changed over the course of the piece.

Cowboy Fantasy followed. It too was played in quadruple mater. It started with a trumpet solo which lead into a soft flute introduction. The tempo was fast and the dynamics were ever changing. We were given trumpet and horn solos along with crisp snare drum rolls. After the middle section slowed the tempo picked up with a western feel and the arrangement ending in Home on the Range.

Light Calvary Overture which was played in quadruple meter was the last selection played before intermission. This featured a loud trumpet intro. As with the other selections the dynamics and tempo were ever changing. After a loud strong start the middle was soft and slow and the end was loud and much faster.

The Children’s March: Washington Post March was played after the fifteen minute intermission. Once again the ensemble was conducted by Randy Davis. This was a march played in duple meter with a constant tempo. The dynamics were bold and remained that way the entire time. There was a strong military feel.

Next we were entertained with a 1930’s piece, Benny Goodman: The King of Swing. This arrangement which was played in quadruple meter had a strong jazzy feel. The tempo started out moderate then slowed greatly. The ever changing dynamics matched the tempo. When the tempo slowed the instruments played very softly and as the tempo increased so did the volume of the instruments playing. Ed Winston’s clarinet solo was the focal point of the entire selection.

The National Emblem March, which was played in duple meter came next. This piece went from piano to forte. There were large accents throughout from the trumpets, flutes, trombones and saxophones.

The next song was God Bless the USA. This featured a vocal soloist, John Baldwin. The band played quietly in the background to accompany the soloist. The volume of the instruments was controlled greatly even thru the transitions. The vocalist was never overpowered by the changes.

The final selection of the evening was Broad Stripes and Bright Stars. Played in quadruple meter, snare drum rolls lead into the flute section playing Yankee Doodle with the horns offering some accompaniment at the beginning. The rest of the ensemble join in in sections. A trumpet solo in the middle signaled a change in the dynamics and tempo that started the piece. The beginning was loud and fast and the slowed and softened. My Country Tis of Thee brought about a slight increase in tempo. The clarinets came in with the Star Spangled Banner and the tempo slowed again. As the band built up to the end the tempo was once again the fast pace that started the selection.

I think that going to this concert made the whole idea of a music appreciation class very clear. I really enjoyed the concert. It was very energetic and relaxing all at the same time. You could not have asked for a better environment than the one we had that night. I sat on the bluff over looking Mobile Bay at sunset and listened to the Baldwin Pops present a variety of different arrangements that celebrate America. The only thing that would have made it better would have been being able to just sit back and listen to the music. Instead I had to take notes the entire time. That took away from my ability to just enjoy what I was hearing. The audience was a little chatty and most of the people kept asking me why I was taking notes. I would go back to another concert. I think the whole idea of the class is to open your mind to the experience of a different kind of music. I got that.

Jazz Concert Report

...attended the Season Finale of the Faculty Artist Concert Series, held in the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center here at the University of Indianapolis. Lasting a little less than two hours, this particular concert took the audience on a tour through the eighteenth to twenty-first centuries of music, featuring artists all the way from the classical era to the modern jazz era. Because of the variety that was showcased in the music, this performance was definitely my favorite of the events I have watched thus far. A very unique part of this concert in particular was its performers. Unlike the other shows I have gone to on campus, this performance consisted of faculty players rather than students, most of which I recognized from simply walking through the halls of Christel DeHaan during my school weeks. Most of the thirteen staff players were older, which added a sense of finesse to their performances; the years of experience that they had under their belts was very evident since the performers were highly skilled and exhibited such emotion in playing their ornate pieces....

Desgraciadas Concert Report

...On September 12, I visited the Club Down Under from 9:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. to view the band Desgraciadas at a multi-band concert. The audience was primarily college-aged hipster Caucasians. The venue was dark, with misty lighting centered on the stage. The audience of hipsters seemed appropriate for the venue- an underground local Tallahassee band. The band consisted of four members. Gladys Nobriga, the guitarist and Amanda Kirchen, the drummer both sported black and white outfits complete with suspenders and thick-rimmed glasses. Desgraciadas’s bass player was Jeppie Gutierrez, who sported a long black dress. Hope Limansah, dressed in jean shorts and a cheetah-print crop top, was the band’s lead singer. Halfway through the venue, Gladys and Amanda switched instruments and successfully demonstrated the band’s flexibility and musical proficiency. Desgraciadas is a group with a unique style of music. To describe their style with one genre would not do justice. The songs they featured in the concert felt like a boiling soup mix of punk and indie rock, with a dash of metal sprinkled on top. Songs were a direct line to the members’ raw emotions. Gladys, while on guitar, swung his head around violently, gripping the guitar tight as he waved it up and down. Hope bounced back and forth with her hips. She would often mimic the dominant guitar’s...

Concert Report 3

...Feelings about the concert We have just finished attending our third concert in Fenway Center last Thursday. It’s an amazing concert, and all of us should give a performance in this concert. Since I came to America, I have attended three concerts, and I feel that this is the best concert I have attended. Comparing with those two concerts I have attended before, I have more feelings about this concert; and I want to share my feelings with you. In this concert, each of us gave our performances as a unit of class, and our class was the first performer in this concert. We gave four shows: two chorus and two team-sings. The names of our songs were: “We Are the World”, “We are Young”, “Mama Tried”, and “21 Guns”. “We are the World” and “21 Guns” were song by our whole class, “We are Young” and “Mama Tried” were song by Nigerians. In this concert, we used many things that we learned in the class, such as for the song, “We are the World”, we used “call and response” at the end of the song. Actually, when we were practicing these songs, the effect wasn’t very good; we even couldn’t decide what songs to perform. However, when we sang in the concert, the effect was excellent, everyone sang well, and the react of the audiences was good, too. Before I sang, I felt nervous and I was afraid of forgetting the lyrics, however, when I saw the react of the audience, I felt very happy and relaxed. The first performance went on well; other performances were also very amazing. There were many great...

Report: Winter Choral Concert

...Choral Concert Report This concert was performed on December 6 at the Performance Hall Mountain View College. Before the concert I was not interested in this event. When I read the title, I thought that a choral was bored. I have to say that this concert was wonderful. Although I enjoyed the guitar and piano concert, this concert is the best. Their voices, their movements, and also their attitudes make this concert my favorite concert. In event was called Winter Choral Festival which the participation of the Molina High School, Carter High School and Mountain View College. Molina High School Chorus opened the event accompanied with a piano and the director. Jimmy Emory was the pianist and Jackie Turner-Creel was the director. The performed three pieces In Dulci Jubilo, Silent Night and Mary Did You Know? The last piece is what I remember more and the one I liked. We could hear the piano and the voices more loud. ...On Wednesday, April 4, I drove to Austin to go see University of Austin’s Butler School of Music Symphonic Band. This is my first time hearing a University symphony band live, and I enjoyed my experience listening to the students' performance.  The performances comprised the Overture to ‘Candide’ by Leonard Bernstein, Shadows Ablaze by Kathryn Salfelder, Sound Asleep by Andrew Boss, Wanderlust by Brandon Scott Rumsey, and Aurora Awakes by John Mackey. I had heard none of these songs before attending the concert so my reaction is solely based on my first-time experience of the pieces.   The Surroundings The room this concert was held in was Bates Recital Hall. My instant reaction towards this room was over how beautiful it looks. From my...

John Mayer Concert Report

...The Band I chose to do my concert report on is none other than John Mayer. Ironically a few hours before attending this concert I had no idea who this performer was, I blindly trusted a good friend of mine, and bought tickets for both us. Having no idea what i was getting into, not to mention this would be the first concert i would ever attend, it ended up being one of the best decisions i have ever made. The concert was divided into 5 portions mainly focused on John Mayer's legendary guitar skills. It started with the full band, went soft as he played an acoustic portion, than livened up the audience with the John Mayer Trio, took it up some more with the Full Band, and closed the concert with a spectacular encore. The first portion of the...

Utsa Concert Report Sample

...Concert Report Qiujie (Blair) Pan I went to see a wind band concert that was played by UTSA University band on Oct 1, 2017. The concert was extremely impressive. Even though it was my first time listening to the live wind band playing, I enjoyed it very much. The band played six songs in total. All the songs were composed in the 20th centuries. Among these songs, I really like the song named Ride by Samuel Hazo (1966). It is a fast song and I did have a feeling that the tempo of this song is taking me for a ride on an endless countryside road. So, I did some research on this song after the concert and tried to analyze this song. In the overture, the trumpets play important roles in introducing the tension. Then the music transferred to a faster...

Big Band Concert Report

...Last Tuesday I attended the Big Band Concert in the Marshall Arts Center. Both the Weber Music Hall and the Marshal Arts Center have very different atmospheres. Unlike the small band, the big band songs seemed to be a lot shorter and were instructed by a conductor. For the first couple songs, there were big basses, drums, a piano, a marimba, saxophones, an electric guitar, trumpets and trombones. The first song was upbeat and had very loud, accented parts. All the instruments played while the symbols stood out the most. One of the trumpet players had a really good solo. One of the next songs was very country club like. It was a lot slower and had a romantic vibe that would be good for dancing. The marimba was not used for this song and the...

Sjsu Music Concert Report

...I went to the SJSU Music Concert Hall on November 11,2015, and it costs 5 dollars for the ticket. When I arrived there, I saw that most of the audiences are SJSU students, and a few of them are professors. The audiences dressed casually, and I dressed casually as well because I think that I was a casual listener at the concert. When I was listening to different pieces, I felt amazing because I never heard this kind of music before. I enjoyed the slow tempo because it gives me the feeling of relax. The pieces that were performed are “ If You Walked A Mile”, “The Five”, “Variations for Abbey”, “Ion Trails”, “ A Different Drummer”, and “All Our Broken Instruments”. The musical style for “If you Walked A Mile” is classical and electric, for “The Five” is orchestra, and the rest of the pieces are classic and electric. There were drums, computer, marimba, gong, triangle, and timpani as instrumentation of the ensemble. There was no seating arrangement and there is only one performer....

Rome River Jam Concert Report

...I attended the Rome River Jam with my family while we had some time in the fall. I really enjoyed the whole experience. I was going to see an assortment of people like Tracey Lawrence. My mother thought the whole show was extremely enjoyable, I only thought a couple of bands were great. The way that this concert works is they have one or two big band names to bring people to the show and use those bands as the reason to come and see all the other little bands. It promotes all the lesser known country artists. Some of the lesser know artists were pretty entertaining, but lacked in comparison to the real stars of the concert. Most of the music was very down to earth and very enjoyable. When a song is made for the enjoyment of other people I...

Swallow Hill Music Concert Report

...Driving to west from my address to Swallow Hill Music Center for 40 minutes one way at the evening was my first-time experience to the music concert in my life. I was a bit nervous when I arrived the place, but thanks to the receptionists at the front desk for warm welcoming and guidance. I took a middle row sit at the center of the hall and everything at the hall was a very nice, a well decorated light, attractive arts on the wall on the all the corners, the stage with five empty sits each with a microphone and a music stand at its front. Watching the performance and at the same time taking a note for my paper was also the only to do list for me. When time arrives, A young lady arrived a stage with a piece of paper and made a brief announcement about the concert and what they do, other notice like no photo graphs and others. Then Marrakech Express band arrived the stage with a full band instruments and after gaining the stage and awaiting the crowd’s silence, Samir El Yesfi begins picking the ‘ûd or lute which is what is called guitar in West accompanied by violin by Sandra Wong, Darbûka, the Moroccan bendir by Brett Bowen, and clarinet by Dexter Payne. ...Home Free Concert On Sunday, May 6th, I went to Madison’s Orpheum Theater with my friend Kaelyn, her mom Julie, and their family friend Malia to see a Home Free concert. Home Free is an all-male, acapella country band, consisting of five members: Austin Brown (lead tenor), Adam Rupp (vocal percussionist/beatboxer), Rob Lundquist (tenor harmony), Adam Chance (baritone harmony), and Tim Foust (bass). What made it extremely exciting for me was the fact that this was my first non-local group concert and Home Free is my favorite acapella band (sorry Pentatonix). Before this, I’d really only ever been to MacDowell Male Chorus and Appleton Boy Choir concerts. The only reason I ever go to those concerts are because my dad sings in the former and...

Concert Report

...Allec Music 116, Pridmore Concert Report #1 April 03, 2013 Concert Report #1 This past Friday I played in the VVC music concert that consisted of four groups: The VVC college band, the flute choir, the brass choir, and the Symphonic band. I played in two of these groups, which were the brass choir and the symphonic band. The brass choir played three numbers and the last one was the most significant to the crowd. We played the theme song from Looney Tunes, which almost the entire crowd recognized. It was interesting to see the crowd reactions after the piece. Not only was there applause but laughter as well due to the enjoyment of hearing this very old theme song. The VVC Symphonic Band performed last and played six different numbers. We opened with a face pace song known as Magnificent Seven. It was a good opener and a fast tempo to set the mood for the rest of the performance. But out of all the pieces the most interesting and difficult one was Festive Overture that was written by Shostakovich. Festive Overture is a mixture of a fast and slow piece together, and it is one of the most difficult songs we have played. However, the crowd seemed to like this one the most, as it was the fastest paced piece. After the piece was over, the crowd gave a standing ovation to the Shostakovich piece and were applauding wildly. They had very much enjoyed the concert and Festive Overture in particular. Pridmore 2 Pridmore 2 Overall, the concert was a fun experience to play...
