Today’s the day we leave to go on holidays I’m so excited I’ve waited for this day to come since forever!!! It was 6:00 in the morning and my family and i had just woken up we were doing some last minute packing, getting ready for our holiday to some island I forgot the name but I was so excited, we haven’t been on a holiday in so long and everyone needed a break from school and work and this was going to be the best holiday ever. The plane leaves at 11am and we would get to the island at 7pm so it was quiet a long flight but it should be worth it. As we put the last of the bags in the taxi we locked the door and were on our way to the airport. As I was sitting there with anticipation they finally called for people to start boarding our flight. Yes this was it get away from school and friends and any drama. We are all seated on the flight and ready to take of. It has been a couple of hours on our flight and everyone is getting restless I need to get up and move my feet, so I walk over to the bathroom and as I walk past I see these two big buff guys sitting with a guy in between them the guy in the middle has handcuffs on and looks really scary I suddenly get this shiver down my back thinking of what he has done to end up in hand cuffs on a plane to an island where people holiday, I move on down the hall and go to the bathroom on my way out I bump into one of the tall Buff guys and scream. “Sorry, young lady I didn’t mean to scare you” says the Buff guy. I said it was fine and went back to my seat. Sitting on my seat I was wondering what could possibly have of happened to have a guy like that on an aeroplane in handcuffs flying to one of the most peaceful places on earth. I was tarting to doze of when I heard the flight attendant lady come announce over the speaker that we had another 3 hours left, I suddenly got excited

He has a tedious work, writing about the same subject day in and day out. William has his own method of working. He believes that notes and facts form a valuable story. William has also his own adage, “..Writing was 99 percent about commitment not inspiration had not helped him shift a single page in all that time”. He assumes, that writ-ing is not about inspiration and encouragement. He believes, that qualities like dedication, loyalty, adherence, are more important to contain. William is dealing with a big complication during his writing. He can’t focus, so he isolates himself from the outside world, he can’t even write, if there’s a view into the garden. William is not a successful writer, and his biographies are neither described as creative nor valuable, but his mind is still full of reflections and speculations; ”No one ever described William’s writing as creative or important but with things on your mind it was as impossible to write unimportant, forgettable things as it was, he imagined, to...

History

...My name is Amanda Beckford I am a Poet and a Writer. I was born in Homerton Hospital in Hackney on the 15th of December 1987. I’ve lived in East London all my life. I went to three different Primary schools. I remember always finishing my work before the others, and then becoming bored and making trouble. Even now, I never sit still, I’m always multi-tasking. I didn’t speak perfect English but Jamaican patois, and being of mixed ethnicity seemed to cause conflict. I didn’t look or sound, like the regular black-British girl. I was taunted at school. I’ve been included in every ‘coolie’ joke under the sun. Being sensitive, I found that these comments began to affect my behaviour over the next few years. At home, and back home, I was a Jamaican-Indian, not a hard-working Indian slave or an ‘unskilled labourer’ as the word suggests. My parents reassured me that it was just people hadn’t come across people that looked like me, that I was no different. Yet I felt different, and had little real friends. This made me want to research my family history and my ancestors. I wanted to know who I really was, and where my people came from, and why I looked different. At secondary school I became very active. I was a member of the student council, l and became the president for three years. I also got into youth parliament and debated at Cambridge University. I began to explore human rights, and learnt how to argue and fight for a good cause, to make change. I felt I had the skills from...

You cannot follow the characters, action, or conflict because the author of the review rambles on and on. Without clear paragraphs, this review will likely lose your interest, and you may skip the movie altogether! When you are the writer, it is helpful to position yourself as a reader. Ask yourself whether you can focus easily on each point you make. Effective writers use a single paragraph for each new idea they introduce. Paragraphs separate ideas into logical, manageable, and distinct units. Each paragraph focuses on only one main idea and presents coherent sentences to support that single point. Because all the sentences in one paragraph support the same point, a paragraph may stand on its own. Each paragraph is shaped by Purpose: the reason why the writer composes the paragraph. < Tone: the attitude the writer conveys about the paragraph’s subject. < Audience: the individual or group whom the writer intends to address. < Content: the written material in the paragraph. < 174 WRITING FOR SUCCESS ...

Senior Reflective Essay

...Senior Writing Project-Reflective Essay As I look back at the writings I have created in these past few years, I realize that other than my junior year, I haven't written any narrative pieces, in any classes. The focus throughout my high school curriculum has been toward argumentative, analysis, and informative writings. Only in my junior year did I write my first creative writings in the form of a short story and a poem. The first creative writing I had to write a "Vomit" Draft. A vomit draft was the very first draft of a paper with little to no guidelines. "Bring two minutes to life" was the only instruction. We had to throw down 500 words without paying any real attention to punctuation or grammar. This kind of freedom associated with such creative writing was an alien concept to me. Getting used to writing without a structure that we had to follow, without a set of guidelines we had to abide by took a while. But, this kind of writing really helped me learn and improve, not just my writings, my organization and my time management skills as well. Knowing that I had to write such a demanding paper (it turned out to be fourteen pages longs), I had to improve my time management skills, which, up till junior year, hadn’t really been a challenge. Forcing myself then, to distribute time wisely has really helped me now, with the terrific pressures and burdens of college applications. This creative writing segment in my junior year helped my prepare, in a way, for these college...

Reflection

...Final Reflection “Has there ever been a time when we have not been awash in a remarkable torrent of symbols and opportunities for reading and writing them?” (William Kist, in the NCTE statement on multimodal literacies) There is an art of reading, an art of thinking, and an art of writing. To read is to fly: it is to soar beyond what it seen on the pages. We write to taste life, in the moment we live and in retrospect of the past. Reading helps develop thought, instead of having to think for yourself. Once you learn to read, you will be forever free. When reading this quote I believe that there is always something interesting being offered in which we can both read and write about. Everyday, there has to be a moment which is better than all the other moments, a moment that makes you smile or laugh, something memorable, something you can look back at and smile because that’s how memorable it was. These are moments in which we can write about to share, because someone out there must be able to connect with this moment and share that smile you had when you experienced it. As well as someone being willing to read it. There are tons of opportunities available for people. Moving on from first semester to second semester I can definitely see how my skills as a writer and a reader has improved. As I read text I can now understand deeper meanings and connect things to other sources or personal connections I’ve made. My work habits and ideas have grown to the point...

Personal Statement - English Literature and Creative Writing

...to study English Literature and Creative writing because I am passionate about and committed to reading and writing. I feel that a structured programme of study is imperative for me to achieve my long-term goal of establishing a successful and varied career as a writer. I know that the path I have chosen will often be difficult to walk but I have already taken a step toward its end by starting an Access course. Throughout my short time on the Access course I have gained confidence in my speaking skills. For example, during a recent discussion on gender and relationships in a graded English discussion I raised a point that the teacher had not thought of and was praised for doing so - this taught me that by pushing myself beyond my comfort zone by sharing my ideas and opinions I will be able to achieve my goals. I know that with the skills taught on the Access course I will be able to achieve my goal of studying and completing a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing. The Access course has taught me the importance of self-reflection and criticism through keeping a reflective log which documents my progress, obstacles and goals. I have learnt that I am able to be objective when analysing my own work and performance; this skill has helped me to realise that in order to improve my work I have to be critical of myself and be able to accept criticism from others, I feel that this skill will prepare me for the competitive world of writing. Another skill I have learnt is...

Experiences as a Writer

...wrote about my life, the summer vacations or silly, imaginary things. I felt intimidated by the prospect of having to fill a page as much as by the endlessness of those first minutes I needed to find a start over than, “Once upon a time.” I like to write. My first experience as a writer started in elementary, around age 12 when I wrote a story. Every now and then, during English class, we were told to write. As I recall, the assignment mostly was to “write about anything” which was very exciting. My Aunt Carol helped me plans ideas for my story. Then, we sat to write down what we had processed. My story was coming together very well. My story was a great, it was about a haunted house out in the country. This is where my writing took off. When I received my paper back from the teacher, she gave me an A on my story. Everyone in my family was so happy for me. My experience as a writer has been extensive. Currently, one writes extensively for school purposes, personal, and as a hobby. For example, I write for my online English and Math classes, whether its discussion threads, questions or essays. One of my experiences that has been bothering me inside since I was a child, it was the sex abuse I encountered as a child. Like many of us, if sex abuse has not happened to you, sex abuse is an ugly thing for a child to go through. Kids at school found out, and started making fun of me. That to me was the hardest part of my childhood, but so was talking...

The Writing Process

...The Writing Process COM/150 Shelly Karl The writing process I have read about in class this week most certainly differs from the way I have written in the past. After reading “The Writing Process”, I have realized how many errors I have made and why it has been hard for me to write my thoughts and ideas down clear and concisely. In the past, I have read assignments and written down my thoughts but without a plan of action or a smooth transition. I often get jumbled and jump from one idea to the next. I have had a hard time to make sure I get all my points across and sometimes I even have an issue with contradicting myself. I sometimes have so many ideas and if not written down the correct way, it can confuse the reader. I believe the easiest step for me in “The Writing Process” is the “Pre-writing” step. In that step I can jot down the things I am thinking without having to have a format and correct grammar. These things are sometimes the hardest for me. Even at my age I sometimes struggle with where to put a comma and where to put a semi-colon. I do not believe I was taught properly while in grade school. The simple foundations of writing have clearly escaped me at some point and I have noticed for a long time that I have issues in making a clear point and transition. I believe outlining for me is going to be the hardest part. Being able to take my research, thoughts and ideas and put them in to a correct format is difficult. I mentioned above that I...

...those situations. The test also stated that I was moderately expressed as having a intuitive personality, a feeling personality, and a judging personality. I feel as if, surprisingly, all of these assessments of me are correct and have been expressed throughout all of my opinions personally and as a writer as well. I have been a writer, to some degree, since I was 5 years old. My first published piece was when I was kindergarten. I simply wrote what I saw and wrote how I felt. Being a Christian, the emotions that I feel towards my fellow man, I feel, is parallel to the Word of God. Being both a former college ball player as well as US Army soldier, intuition is paramount to the success that one can gain. It is often expressed within my writing in blogs as well as in social outlets and print media. Even the "judging" aspect is appropriate as well and lines up with who I am. I don't feel as if these character traits make be a better writer per se, but I feel as if they successfully define the person that I am BEFORE I...

Marketing Languaje

...write in a technical way that can, unfortunately, bore, confuse and/or scare your potential consumer. (Sorry about that). To illustrate my point, have you ever read an article written by a doctor, or a lawyer? Ugh! You need to remember that when you are writing marketing pieces, you are not writing for your peers who understand the business jargon of your industry, you are writing for your mostly non-technical potential customers. And they need to ‘get’ what you’re saying.Long-winded technical jargon and terminology has no place in your marketing pieces. You run the very real risk of alienating your potential customer by making them feel stupid. Or you can confuse them unnecessarily by being too technical in your descriptions. Of course you would never do this intentionally, but in my experience this can, and does happen – often. That’s why it makes sense to run any marketing piece you write by your marketing partner. Your marketing firm specialises in getting your marketing message across, and they deal with writing press releases and articles all the time. They can cast a professional eye over what you’ve written, and advise you on any changes that may be needed. Or if you prefer, you can ask them for their help with writing your marketing...
