Conflict Resolution
Knowing how to handle various situations in the workplace can determine success or failure within an organization. In the following, we will discuss three storybook situations where issues exist among employees. The discussion will look at communication styles and barriers and then look at the conflict and negotiation process involved in handling the situations. The first situation centers on communication challenges among employees.
Storybook 1: Communication Challenges In storybook one, we have a communication barrier called filtering. The employee tries to put a spin on things to make the news look good to management when it truly is not. In this situation, I would let the individual know that it is acceptable for him to provide the bad as it has happened. I would go on to tell him that it would benefit him and other staff to provide exact facts, good or bad. This would be much more helpful to be able to resolve the problem effectively. In the case of the employee that did not want to voice her opinion, I would encourage her to voice her opinion even if she is hesitant. I would inform her that her opinion is as valuable as the opinion of all team members. I would also reiterate that no member would be chastised for his or her thoughts or opinions. All team members will be respectful of what each member has to say. I would also reiterate the purpose of a team is to work together and having different perspectives is what will bring more ideas to the team. There is no such thing as a dumb question or answer. An example from personal experience centers on being the one team member who would remain quiet. This was the case of working for someone who micromanaged everything. This manager would consistently contradict anything an employee would suggest so it got to the
