Confucious Teachings in China

...Confucius regarded three things that is people, wealth and education as the three essentials of any country. He is believed to be greatest advocate of popular education and the first person in Chinese history to give his almost entire life to teaching (Zhang 1999). He worked to establish private education and make education accessible to all. He believed that the purpose of education was to provide with the ability to reason, to develop right thoughts, right feelings and right actions and that a good education system should provide young people with enough chance for developing the right concepts and capacity for leading a happy life and for seeing service to other people as their duty. He also believed that if people do not have knowledge they could not cooperate in an effective way and the direction of man’s moral growth depends very much on his education and merit should be the social way in awarding political and economic privileges. Respect for knowledge and the lifelong pursuit of learning was a fundamental human obligation in his tradition. According to Mackerras (2008), the dominant ideology of traditional China was Confucianism which was secular, hierarchical, authoritarian and family centred. The imperial family was at the top and an amazing small number of officials just below who were largely selected and maintained in office after going through a comprehensive, complex and stereotyped examination system. 2. Confucious Live Next Door Review

...David Brown Instructor: Edwin Hostetter World Religions: East and West REL-223-CL05 3 April 2016 Book Report One: Confucius Lives Next Door This is a very interesting book. I thought it was kind of dry at times, but overall it was a good book to read. I, myself, have been to almost all of Asia so I was able to relate to parts of the book. I think that the crime rate is directly related to education. I found some information that suggests the while we strive to educated the individual in the west, they tend to educated the society in the east. A lot of crime, in my opinion, is based on how an individual is effected by their community or society. If you educate the society on all matters, not just crime, it makes for better living and people are more inclined to do the next right thing. The crime rates are definitely lower in Japan compared to the United States (Table 1). Table 1 Here’s a comparison of the frequency of major crimes in the United States and Japan in 1996. This table shows the number of crimes per 100,000 people: | United States | Japan | | Murder | 7.53 | 0.97 | | Robbery | 255.8 | 1.75 | | Rape | 37 | 1.5 | | Arson | 46 | 1 | | Aggravated Assault | 440 | 5.4 | | Burglary | 1,099 | 187 | | Source: Reid, T. R. Confucius Lives next Door: What Living in the East Teaches Us about Living in the West. New York: Random House, 1999. Print. The Asian Miracle is broken down into two types: Economic and Social. China And Confucianism Similarities

...religion is Ren. Ren in English is varied in ways such as benevolence, human-heartedness, and humanity. These are common themes in most religion, and in Confucianism this was one of the most important aspects. In religion, people must treat others how they want to be treated. This is important in both Confucianism and religion. The other similarity is realizing that you will not live forever, but in the time one has they should help others and treat everyone the same. In Confucianism however the focus was more on the rulers. Ceremonies and music are the two most important means of education for Confucius, and yet he declares, “If a man is not ren, what has he to do with ceremonies (li)? If he is not ren, what has he to do with music?” Confucious also says, “To master oneself and return to propriety (li) is humanity. If a man can for one day master himself and return to propriety, all under heaven will return to humanity. To practice humanity depends on oneself. Does it depend on others? “The individual, especially the leader, must dig deep within the self to find the source of ren, and the self should never be cut off from the community” Although most people see this as religious implication, Confucius wanted to help people live moral lives not because of a higher power, but because he saw it as a path to enlightenment. Another aspect of Confucianism that leads to it not being a religion is the view it has towards heaven. Confucius says that there is one thread that is central...

An Analysis of the Central Themes of the Bhagavad Gita and Its Influence on Significant Historical Figures and Literature.

...An Analysis of the Central Themes of The Bhagavad Gita and its Influence on Significant Historical Figures and Literature. Gavin McClung “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” -Eleanor Roosevelt The Bhagavad Gita has been estimated to have been in existence since about 500 BCE although the oldest known handwritten copy is in a museum in London and is dated to 1488. It predates the Bible, the Quran, and 50 Shades of Grey. As one of the oldest pieces of literature known to us it has gained a reputation as one of the most insightful tomes into the human condition and it’s philosophies and themes have influenced many of the most historically significant people and their actions. Mahatma Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry David Thoreau, and even Albert Einstein all read the Gita and were deeply moved by it. These are not normal run of the mill people, but were great thinkers, people of action and world-changers. Surely, the world has been influenced by such a powerful text through the many people it has inspired and taught with it’s central themes of Yoga and Renunciation, and Dharma and Karma among others. Here we will take a look at some of the major themes of the Gita as well as some of the historically significant figures it has influenced and...

Who Shall Rule- History 101

...Groups are common in every society, usually when a person is in the same group they tend to think a like and have the same goals. When a group is established it is essential to find a leader for that particular group, they need someone to guide them. There are many different groups of society, the elite and the deprived. Each has their own leader, but they have to be in the same class as the rest. They have to fall in the same “neighborhood” as their people, “Therefore, to achieve what he can of that perfection, every man needs to stay in the neighborhood of others and associate with them... which is why he is called the social and political animal.” If they are in the same neighborhood or class as the people then the leader would know what the people go through. The people always know if the leader is doing a good job. A good leader leads the good and a bad leader leads the bad, even though, in their mind it seems as they are doing good. But no matter who they rule, they have the natural capacity to rule. Someone would have to be born with this ability to rule, and handle everything that comes with being a leader. This is what most rulers have in common. Like King Hammurabi, even though he was a very good leader, his laws were ridiculous. But people still considered him a good leader regardless of his laws in the code of Hammurabi. King Hammurabi brought order to his people and they appreciated that, they knew and they did not want to be a victim of karma. “Even if...
