There have been no alternatives provided by the government for conscientious objectors in South Korea although the necessity of alternatives has been aware and intensified domestically and internationally. Recently, Korean journal of defense analysis, “a government-funded research institute”, published the article by Jung and Sohn, which analyzes related military policy issues and makes some recommendations for the future, targeting military service environment in 2020. It includes recommended policy options for conscientious objectors. Jung and Sohn introduce a quota system: “a maximum of 300 (50 percent of those who meet the eligibility requirements on a yearly basis) conscientious objectors […] would be allowed to receive the training needed

...farm and hunt out of necessity. Shooting became a requirement to help feed the family by putting meat on the table. (York, Alvin C., Jr) York turned to drinking and fighting as a young adult. He was known to be more of a nuisance that would never amount to anything. (Birdwell) In 1914 York found God as he experienced a religious conversion. York joined a fundamentalist church with a tough ethical code that prohibited drinking, dancing, movies, swimming, swearing, popular literature, and moral injunctions against violence and war. (Birdwell) When the United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917, York's new found faith in God would be put to the test. York wrote on his draft notice "Don’t want to fight," but he was denied conscientious objector status and drafted into the Army. (Padgett) During training he was convinced by his battalion commander, Gonzalo Edward Buxton, a fellow Bible student, that the Bible endorsed active service. (Duffy) York was deployed to France in 1918. He was such a good marksman that he quickly got promoted to Corporal and began training other men in marksmanship. York’s fame came during a battle in the Argonne Forest against German machine gun positions. A group of 17 Americans soldiers led by York went on a surprise attack against a platoon of German machine guns. They captured 15-20 German soldiers without a shot being fired. Letter Reply to Granpda for Not Going to Vietnam War

...A LETTER TO GRANDPA Dear grandpa, I am so happy when I got your letter, I haven’t heard from you for quite a long time, I miss you so much. We are doing great, hope you are the same grandpa. I have read your opinions about the Vietnam War and I have some serious discussion about this. I hope you will understand my perspectives and not forcing me to be conscripted to go to fight in Vietnam. To start with, as you know that South Vietnam seemed to be under attack from communism, with its political, economic and social implications therefore it requested for USA and Australia’s supports. Moreover, we were willing to help because we don’t more countries to become communist like a domino effect and it might affect our country’s policies. Grandpa, do you get why did Australia even agree to become involved? It’s such a bad idea. Australia fight in Vietnam because our biggest ally – USA did and we want to make sure they stay bound to us if we need them to help us in the future (in addition as we formed ANZUS that means alliances have to help each other’s). However, in this case fighting is not a good choice because it will have bad effects on the relationships and in general of those countries. One of the reasons is Vietnam didn’t do anything to us, as if declaimed war or anything that require us to fight, to protect our homes; this case they just want to be communist. Australia was sort of got influenced by the America. I think Vietnam has the right to choose between capitalism...

Jehovah

...Jehovah’s Witness are members of a Christian religion who believes that God name is Jehovah and his Son name is Jesus Christ. They base their beliefs on what is found in the Holy Bible. According to () “Jehovah’s Witnesses are not allowed to celebrate Christmas, birthdays, Easter, Thanksgiving, or any other holidays, claiming they all have pagan roots.” To a Jehovah’s Witness a Bible is more reliable, Christ died on a stake, and prayers are to be directed only to Jehovah though Christ. Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t believe in sex before marriage and believes to be a serious sin before God. They meet three times a week, one of those three times is held on a Sunday. On that Sunday Jehovah’s Witnesses meet in a Kingdom Hall, a rented building, where there is no crosses displayed outside or inside. During the time they are there the meeting is intense and holds about 200 people. Jehovah’s Witnesses also practice door-to-door to spread the word to others. In 2005, thousands of Jehovah’s Witnesses helped restored damaged homes in New Orleans due to the Hurricane Katrina. They also helped people who suffer the effects of war and other natural disasters. According to "Jehovah's Witnesses Official Media Web Site: Contributions to the Community" (2009), “In June 2011, Tropical Strom Allison dropped nearly three feet of water on the city of Houston, Texas in a single 24-hour period. Conscientious Objector In Antigone

...A conscientious objector is defined as a person standing up for what they believe to be right. A person in the real world, like Rosa Parks, or a character from a play, such as Antigone, can be conscientious objectors. Antigone and Rosa Parks both fit the description of a conscientious objector. The reason why they fit into the description is because both women had the courage to do what they thought was right. In the play Antigone by Sophocles, the character Antigone can be described as a conscientious objector. An example in the play that shows her righteousness would be when Antigone buried Polyneices, her brother, even though Creon had made a decree saying “no one shall bury him”(Sophocles 688). Creon prohibited anyone from burying Polyneices because he betrayed his people by attacking them. Polyneices’ brother, Eteocles, is considered a hero for dying for his people, so that they were protected. Since Eteocles died as a brave hero, Creon buried him “with military honors”(688) and “gave him a soldier's funeral…”(Sophocles 688). Therefore meaning that Polyneices did not receive a funeral. Antigone was filled with anger and believed that leaving Polyneices out on a field for carrion birds to...

...much discrimination over the years. Many other religions think of Jehovah’s Witnesses as a cult and they want everyone else in their cult. The things I have heard people say about the Jehovah’s Witnesses they don’t know what they are preaching about, they are all about money, they harass people at their homes. These are just some of the things I have heard about them. After searching the web I have found that the French government has branded Jehovah’s Witnesses as a dangerous sect. In 2006, 71 kingdoms Halls of Jehovah’s Witnesses were, bombed, burned, shot at, and vandalized. The French government ha publically called Jehovah’s Witness criminals. South Korea has imprisoned one thousand Jehovah’s Witnesses ministers who are conscientious objectors to military service. In Moscow the have outlawed Jehovah’s Witnesses as a religion. They cannot own houses of worship and are banned from practicing their faith anywhere. In some parts of Russia, police have even raided church services, beaten worshipers and arrested others. Dealing with Conflicting Values

... Mary Gentile supports this concept and provides that there are “lots of talk about different cultures, but even across cultures there is a list of core values”(Simon, 2010). When conflict of values between an individual and a company arise, Gentile suggested that the individual can leave the company, do what is asked, or find a way to change the problems within the organization. When I consider the solutions that she presents in her book, it seems apparent that these are the few options that the individual has. Unfortunately for many, making a decision is very difficult because it forces them to compromise the very foundation of their being. When I entered into the military over eight years ago, I was asked if I was a conscientious objector. I didn’t know what it meant at the time, but after it was explained to me, I knew that the answer...

Mandatory Services

...Mandatory Service People are fond of saying that this is a free country. What they are less apt to state is that freedom is not free. There is a cost to maintaining the freedoms we so often take for granted. In furtherance of that cost I would propose a coast amendment that all able-bodied young Americans devote at least two years of their lives in support of their country. That support would be in the form of military or civil duty. This country was founded by individuals who gave their time, money and sometimes lives to create a society where all have the same opportunity to succeed, or at the very least are not barred from succeeding. That opportunity comes with a cost. Monetary cost in the way of taxes to support this system. Also costs in the way of manpower and intellect. It is my belief that the intellectual support is as important, if not more so, then the physical. Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and James Madison’s work in the federalist papers, can be argued, were as important to the American Revolution as any accomplishment on the battlefield. To that I would define able-bodied as anyone not physically or mentally handicapped that can or does hold a full or part time employment or anyone who is not able to hold a job as determined by the Social Security Administration guidelines. I would define young as anyone between the ages of eighteen and twenty-six. Therefore the service could be before people begin college, trade school, or a career. The service can be...

Just Lather That's All Analysis

...Captain Torres took. The barber was “secretly” a rebel; he was living on borrowed time anyway. Yet he left someone else to pick up where he failed, “[Captain Torres is] an executioner and I am only a barber. Each person has his own place in the scheme of things. That’s right. His own place,” (Tellez, 1993, pg. 195) He let the captain go free and at the end of the story it is revealed that Torres knew of the barber’s rebel ties. The barber is as good as dead either which way, yet he chose, in vain, to try and preserve his own life. Soldiers from the documentary, “Soldiers of Conscience” have undergone the same question: to kill or not to kill? In real life, there are consequences; by exhibiting their genuine admission in applying for conscientious observer (C.O). In this situation, rarely does someone get off ‘scot-free’, and more likely, where jail time is awarded. Camilo Meija was convicted guilty of desertion, (abandonment of a duty or post without permission, with no intention of returning) which lead to one year in a military prison. Is becoming a military fugitive, living on the run, then going to jail really worth keeping a clear conscience? No, it’s not. Tours last 6 months to two years, killing someone in a war where it is kill or be killed is completely different than killing someone for pure pleasure. Kevin Benderman was in the same position Camilo Meija was in. He had killed in the past. Why a change? Why did they have a need to replenish an already “soiled” conscience...

...also a refugee. Historically, conscientious objection has had a rather delicate place under refugee protection in Canada. Acclaimed international refugee law authority James Hathaway has said about conscientious objectors that they “… are neither refugees per se nor excluded from protection” (CITE). The difficulties are compounded by the sociopolitical nature of military desertion. However, there has been one point of general agreement in Canadian courts, it is that individuals who desert merely out of fear of combat or dislike of the military are not refugees (ZOLF, ATES); there has been preferential treatment...

Voting

...Argumentative Essay Should all citizens be required by law to vote in Australia? All citizens should be compelled by law to vote in Australia. In Australia today it is mandatory to be on the electoral roll and to vote at federal and state elections for all citizens over eighteen years of age. However, it has not always been the case. At the beginning of the 20th century most men and women were eligible to vote except for indigenous people who were excluded. Following poor voter turnout in a previous election, compulsory voting was introduced in 1924. In 1962 Indigenous people gained the right to vote and it was made compulsory for them in 1984. In 1973 the voting age was changed from twenty-one to eighteen (Skwirk , 2014). The following discussion will argue that the benefits of compulsory voting far outweigh the disadvantages. In our society we have certain obligations like paying taxes, compulsory education and jury duty. Compulsory voting is just another civic duty much less onerous than any of the above. Australia is one of only eleven countries to enforce participation in elections. A 94% voter turnout for the last federal election compared favourably to 65% in the 2010 United Kingdom election and 57% in the 2012 United States presidential election (Padmanabhan, 2015). The argument that compulsory voting is incompatible with democratic government obviously does not apply to Australia that is considered one of the most transparent, representative and least corrupt...

...The experiment[edit] Milgram Experiment advertisement Three individuals were involved: the one running the experiment, the subject of the experiment (a volunteer), and a confederate pretending to be a volunteer. These three people fill three distinct roles: the Experimenter (an authoritative role), the professor (a role intended to obey the orders of the Experimenter), and the Learner (the recipient of stimulus from the Teacher). The subject and the actor both drew slips of paper to determine their roles, but unknown to the subject, both slips said "teacher". The actor would always claim to have drawn the slip that read "learner", thus guaranteeing that the subject would always be the "teacher". At this point, the "teacher" and "learner" were separated into different rooms where they could communicate but not see each other. In one version of the experiment, the confederate was sure to mention to the participant that he had a heart condition.[1] The "teacher" was given an electric shock from the electro-shock generator as a sample of the shock that the "learner" would supposedly receive during the experiment. The "teacher" was then given a list of word pairs which he was to teach the learner. The teacher began by reading the list of word pairs to the learner. The teacher would then read the first word of each pair and read four possible answers. The learner would press a button to indicate his response. If the answer was incorrect, the teacher would administer a shock to...
