...------------------------------------------------- Constellation From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article is about the star grouping. For other uses, see Constellation (disambiguation). | | | | * Top: Baroque drawing of the constellation Orionfrom Johannes Hevelius' celestial catalogue * Bottom: Contemporary map of Orion from the IAUand photography of the night sky | In everyday usage, a constellation is a traditional or recognizable group of stars in the night sky, or the region of the sky containing them. In technical usage these meanings have been separated, with groupings of stars being called asterisms, and the word constellation being reserved for a specific area of the celestial sphere with boundaries laid down by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). These areas mostly had their origins in Western-traditional asterisms from which the constellations take their names. When astronomers say something is “in” a given constellation they mean it is within those official boundaries. There are 88 officially recognized constellations, covering the entire sky[1] which have grown from the 48 classical Greek constellations laid down by Ptolemy in the Almagest. Out of these 88 constellations, 12 compose the zodiac signs. Thus, any given point in a celestial coordinate system can unambiguously be assigned to a constellation. It is usual in astronomy to give the constellation in which a given object is found along with its coordinates in order to convey...

...My favorite constellation is Cassiopeia. It is named after a queen from Greek mythology. Cassiopeia was discovered by Ptolemy, a Greek astronomer. It's been one of my favorites since I heard the story behind it when I was younger. So, I picked it to have a chance to write my own origin of Cassiopeia. Cassiopeia was a queen, married to King Cepheus, with a daughter named Andromeda. Cassiopeia was a very vain woman, and she said that she and her daughter were both more beautiful than Nereids(sea nymphs). This angered Poseidon, and he sent a sea monster to terrorize the coasts of King Cepheus' country. Cepheus and Cassiopeia found that they needed to sacrifice their daughter to satisfy the monster and Poseidon. They tied her to a rock by the shore for the monster to take, but Andromeda was saved by Perseus, who killed the sea monster with Medusa's head. Poseidon, angry that no one had been punished, tied Cassiopeia to a chair in the heavens, creating the Cassiopeia constellation....

...CONSTELLATIONS and ASTROLOGICAL SIGNS * What is a Constellation? * A constellation is a group of stars that appears to form a pattern or picture like Orion the Great Hunter, Leo the Lion, or Taurus the Bull. Constellations are easily recognizable patterns that help people orient themselves using the night sky. * In modern astronomy, a constellation is an internationally defined area of the celestial sphere. These areas are grouped around asterisms, patterns formed by prominent stars within apparent proximity to one another on Earth's night sky. * The constellation Orion is one of the most recognizable in the night sky. * There are 88 standard constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) since 1922. The majority of these go back to the 48 constellations defined by Ptolemy in his Almagest (2nd century). The remaining ones were defined in the 17th and 18th century; the most recent ones are found on the southern sky, defined in Coelum australe stelliferum by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille (1763). * There are also numerous historical constellations not recognized by the IAU, or constellations recognized in regional traditions of astronomy or astrology, such as Chinese, Hindu or Austral Aboriginal. * Are the Stars in a Constellation near each other? * Not necessarily. Each constellation is a collection of stars that are distributed in space in three dimensions – the stars are all different distances from Earth. The stars in a...

...I am writing this essay to explain my favorite constellation and why I like it. Well, the one I like more is the constellation of Virgo, because my star sign is a virgo. Its name is latin and means virgin and its symbol is Unicode ♍. It's lying between Leo to the west and Libra to the east. It is also the second largest constellation in the sky after Hydra. According to the Babylonian myth, this constellation was known as "The Furrow", representing the goddess Shala's ear of grain or corn. One star in this constellation, Spica, retains this tradition as it is the latin word for "ear of grain", one of the major products of the Mesopotamian furrow. The Greeks and Romans associated Virgo with their goddess of wheat/agriculture, Demeter...

...distinctive patterns, called constellations, and formed by the stars. Constellations are usually consist of bright stars that appear close to each other. Oriental cultures formed complicated patterns from some of the faintest stars, creating hundreds of constellations. "Constellation" is the name we give to seeming patterns of stars in the night sky. "Stella" is the Latin word for star and a constellation is a grouping of stars. In general, the stars in these groups are not actually close to each other in space, they just appear to be close when viewed from Earth. Constellations are named patterns of stars. All societies created them. The classical ancient constellations that populate our sky began in the lands of the middle-east thousands of years ago, their origins largely lost to time. They passed through the hands of the ancient Greeks, who covered them with their legends and summarized them in story and verse. During Roman times they were assigned Latin names. The ancient constellations limit out only the bright patterns. From around 1600s to 1800s, astronomers invented a large group of "modern" constellations from the faint stars that rest between the classical figures, from pieces of ancient constellations, and from the stars that occupy the part of the southern sky that could not be seen from classical lands. The patterns they imagined are the constellations. Today, it can be difficult to make out some of the shapes of the constellations because city lights obscure...

...My favorite constellation is Sagittarius, or "The Archer" because it's my zodiac sign. Sagittarius is the largest constellation in the Southern Hemisphere, making it the fifteenth largest constellation overall. It's located at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy and its brightest stars form a teapot. This infamous constellation, often depicted as being a centaur holding a bow and arrow, was catalogued in the 2nd century by the Greek astronomer, Ptolemy. Though Sagittarius is a constellation like all the rest, it's unique shape comes with a fascinating story of how it came to be. A long time ago, there was once a centaur named Chiron. Chiron was renowned for his gentleness and archery skills. However, one day, Hercules accidentally shot and wounded Chiron with an arrow dipped in the poison of the Lernaean Hydra. Though Chiron had excellent healing skills, his pain was too great to be healed. Since he was immortal and could not die, he requested to take the place of Prometheus. Prometheus had been punished for bringing fire to Earth and would get his liver devoured day after day. After the switch had been made, Jupiter put Chiron in the stars as recognition for his righteousness. There was once a Roman god by the name of Vyaos. Vyaos was rather unpredictable. At times he...

...My favorite constellation is Coma Berenices because of who it's named after. The constellation Coma Berenices is named after Queen Berenice of Egypt who sacrificed her long hair. Historically, she lived during the time that Alexandria became a cultural center in Egypt and that is very interesting. The constellation is part of the Ursa Major family and is close to both the Leo constellation as well as Bootes. It is especially close to Arcturus, the brightest star in the Bootes constellation. Coma Berenices got its name because during the Third Syrian War, Ptolemy (her husband) began a dangerous journey to avenge his sister's murder. His new wife, Berenice, swore to Aphrodite to sacrifice her long hair, which she loved, if she could bring her...

...I've chosen the Phoenix constellation because It remember me of Fawkes, the Phoenix of Dumbledore who was just amazing and so pretty. He helped Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore many times. It is called Phoenix constellation because it has the form of a Phoenix. You can look at the Phoenix constellation with naked eyes in the southern sky. It is composed of 74 stars, it is not very bright. To have the best observation you should look at it in autumn. The Phoenix constellation was mostly used in Egyptian and Greek myth, it was created as a link with the sun-god. The Phoenix is a legendary bird who has a very long life (like 1 life is 500 years) and is characterised by his power. His power is that he can reborn from his ashes, he dies of his...

...Personally, my favorite constellation is a tossup between Orion and Scorpius, however I must admit the myth behind the Orion constellation is incredibly interesting, allowing it to come first as my favorite constellation. Honestly, Scorpius is one of my favorites purely based on the fact that I myself am a Scorpio. I chose Orion as my favorite constellation because the history behind this constellation is so fascinating. This constellation was named after a great Greek hunter and bowman. The most prominent stars in this constellation are Alnilam, Mintaka and Alnitak. These three stars form Orion’s belt, as well as Bellatrix at his left shoulder and Betelgeuse at his right. As many would know, Bellatrix Lestrange nee Black was a notoriously dark witch who served side by side with Voldemort, the darkest wizard of this time and age. The Blacks were known to name their children after stars, and Bellatrix was no exception....

...Do you have a strategy? 100 Technology Executives were polled from the Fortune 500 by the SBS team at Long View and asked one question. “Do you have a strategy?” That question though requires a definition. What is strategy? Michael E. Porter published a paper in conjunction with Harvard Business School stating clearly what it is not. Strategy is not operational effectiveness. While operations are necessary they conclude, they are not sufficient nor a strategy. We agree. For over twenty years technology has been a vehicle to drive operational efficiency of business processes. As an industry we have become masters of taking both complex and simple tasks and providing both scale and cost savings through said IT operations. This worked and worked extremely well for most IT executives as we could execute with multi-discipline partnerships, segment technology stacks and general provide core applications to our business partners. However we would suggest we are on the midst of our Apollo moment in technology. 1969 saw one of man’s greatest accomplishments achieved. Neil Armstrong walked on the moon a mere ten years after Kennedy’s bold challenge. A relatively insurmountable task when you consider we hadn’t even sent a man to space 9yrs earlier, and yet now we were walking on the moon broadcasting for the world to see. Yet the 1970’s were not as kind to our bold space explorer’s, the public interest was low and life in space appeared to be relatively routine. It...

..."Sex on the Moon: The Amazing Story Behind the Most Audacious Heist in History" by Ben Mezrich tells the true story of a young man named Thad Roberts who masterminded the first crime ever to take place in NASA. Thad Roberts, a fellow in a prestigious NASA program had an idea—a romantic, albeit crazy, idea. He wanted to give his girlfriend the moon. Literally Thad convinced his girlfriend and another female accomplice, both NASA interns, to break into an impregnable laboratory at NASA's headquarters—past security checkpoints, an electronically-locked door with cipher security codes and camera-lined hallways—and help him steal the most precious objects in the world:the moon rocks. Mezrich has pored over thousands of pages of court records, FBI transcripts, and NASA documents, and has interviewed most of the participants in the crime to reconstruct the madcap story of genius, love, and duplicity all centered around an Ocean’s Eleven style heist that reads like a Hollywood thrill-ride. Mezrich uses his trademark narrative non-fiction style to tell the story, which basically means it reads like fiction. While his stories are extensively researched and are factual (though perhaps biased in some cases), the books are written in such a way that they are very engaging and easy to read. Sex on the Moon went by much more quickly than an average work of non-fiction; it was fascinating and the pages flew by. Thad Roberts is portrayed as a lost and wandering soul who finally found...
