...The ocean covers roughly two thirds of the Earth’s surface area, and as such is the most valuable resource that we have. Every year through mal-treatment and abuse we irreparably damage our ocean and the ecology found within it. Instead of focusing on what we can gain through strip mining the ocean of its treasures, work needs to be done to establish a safeguard for its preservation. Late President and naturalist Theodore Roosevelt stated “To waste, to destroy, our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the [ocean] instead of using it so as to increase it’s usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very property which we ought by to hand down to them amplified and developed”. The oceans of this planet are the last unexplored spaces in our domain, as human beings. Man has successfully conquered space, traveling to the moon and expounding on the mysteries of outer space. But in the sea mysteries still remain, ranging from the untold countless life forms yet to be documented and discovered to the unexplored and unseen regions of the great blue deep. Without a care to its future man is ravaging our oceans, and destroying any hope of discovery. Every year fishermen complain that their catches come back smaller and smaller from the previous generations. Constant over fishing has caused a population decline in the trade fishes. Fishermen primarily ply their trade close the coastlines in depths of 200 meters (approximately 600 ft). Those areas can only...

...Brent Spar incident started out when Shell announced its plans to decommission the Brent Spar oil-drilling platform in the North Sea. An environmental group, Greenpeace, opposed this decision and took it to the media to gain national support. The media painted Greenpeace protestors are courageous and a saviors of the environment. In theory, Shell took the necessary steps needed to decommission this oil-drilling platform. First, Shell invested funds into research and development to figure out the best ways to dismantle the rig. Secondly, they selected the most effective and logical option. Lastly, with the information in hand, they sought out approval from the UK government (Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of the environment) and obtained a license to sink the platform. The reason why this incident was such a controversy was because of the lack of communication between shell and the shakeholders/ factions. The stakeholders in this ordeal were Greenpeace, scientists, industry, community, etc. This in return cost them millions of dollars in revenue/profit. Greenpeace was the biggest antagonist in this situation. Shell succeeded in making them their enemy instead of an ally. Shell should have made them part of the decision making process and reviewed the limited options with Greenpeace. If Greenpeace had disagreed with shell, the decision to sink the platform would have been amicable. Greenpeace would not have taken all those steps to ensure that Shell was seen...

What are the various implicit objects available in JSP? Explain each of them with an example. Ans: Implicit Objects In any JSP Page, there are a bunch of implicit objects that are available for the programmer to use. It contains a variety of information that can be used to display stuff on the page. In this chapter, we are going to look at the following JSP Implicit Objects that are available for a programmer. • request • response • out • session • config • application • page • pageContext So, Lets get Started!!! JSP Implicit Objects The JSP Implicit objects mentioned in the list in the previous paragraph are available by means of automatically defined variables. These variables have the same name and case as the list above. In the forthcoming paragraphs we will be looking at them one by one. request This is the HttpServletRequest instance associated with the client request. As you know, the data between the Servlet and the JSP flows by using the HttpServletRequest and the HttpServletResponse objects. The page receives a request and sends a response. The data sent by a JSP page is available in the request in the Servlet and similarly...

...BP & Deepwater Horizon C. Nelson BP & Deepwater Horizon Every business, in some way, is affected by public and private criticism. One industry that is never too far away from criticism is the oil and gas industry. Over the course of this essay, we will explore BP, its stakeholders, some of their criticisms, and BP’s response to those criticisms. BP, formerly British Petroleum, is the fourth largest oil and gas companies in the world in terms of revenue and sixth based on production. (Statista, 2015) (Forbes, 2015) Although BP doesn’t have an official mission statement, the company does have a few statements entitled “Our Values”, “Clear Priorities”, and “Our strategy and sustainability”. BP (2015) states, “We have five values that express our shared understanding of what we believe, how we aim to behave and what we aspire to be as an organization.” Those five values include safety, respect, excellence, courage, and one team. “Clear Priorities” (2015) details three main topics that top the company’s interests including: safe, reliable and compliant operations; disciplined financial choices; and competitive project execution. Thirdly, BP has a commitment to sustainability and states (2015), “We believe that the best way for BP to achieve sustainable success is by acting in the long-term interests of our shareholders, our partners and society.” The three pillars augment the lack of a mission statement and express BP’s commitments and responsibilities....

...On April 20, 2010 there was an explosion in the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico which caused the rig to sink and the death of 11 people. The explosion also broke a BP oil pipe which leaked oil and gas into the water about 42 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The pipe was about 5000 feet bellow the ocean’s surface and leaked an estimated 4.9 million barrels (about 200 gallons) into the water; this was the largest accidental oil spill that has ever occurred. The oil quickly spread; some of it caused oil slicks on the surface which can be spread over long distances by pushing winds while some of it hovered in the middle of the water, just above the pipe. One oil plume was reported to be 22 miles long. This plume was formed because chemical dispersants (which were supposed to break up the oil) mixed with seawater and the oil and allowed the oil to stay suspended above the surface. As much as 20 percent of the oil ended up on the sea floor which caused damage to coral and other organisms below the surface. Some effects the spill had on the Gulf were immediately noticeable to the naked eye; pelicans cover in oil, dead fish floating in brown smudge, smothered turtles washing up on shore. Large amounts of both dolphins and turtles became ill and stranded after the accident. Originally it seemed that the only effected birds were seabirds because even tiny amounts of oil on their feathers hindered their ability to fly, swim, and find food by diving. However, it has been...

...Ethics & Credibility in Business Communications: WMATA Rail System Gwenda Woodland COM/295 August 10, 2015 Sandra Norris Ethics & Credibility in Business Communications: WMATA Rail System The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (“WMATA”) has been plagued with various problems within its system and on the Metro rails lately. These issues are causing Metro riders much grief and they do not feel safe or find the Metro to be dependable at this time. The problems that the Metro rail has been experiencing are rails smoking due to electrical arcing, derailment of trains, and the constant malfunction of the Metro escalators. Metro riders are concerned that whenever there are serious issues taking place in the Metro system WMATA does not have things under control, or notify the riders in a timely manner so that things do not get out of control. Electrical Arcing Accident On January 12, 2015, there was an electrical arcing accident at the L’Enfant Plaza Metro station which caused the station and two trains to fill with smoke. Panic was definitely in the air because the Metro riders were not notified immediately of an emergency evacuation plan or how quickly the situation was going to be resolved. Unfortunately, there was one passenger fatality and two passengers were hospitalized in serious condition. (National Transportation Safety Board, 2015) Train Derailment On August 5, 2015, a derailment of a non-passenger train at the Smithsonian Metro...

...BP Oil Spill Introduction The United States consumes 19.5 million barrels of oil each day. (Rahman,K. Sabeel, 2011) This demonstrates how dependent the American society is on fossil fuel. This need for large amount of oil to keep the economy moving is having serious environmental impact, particularly in areas where large off shore drilling platforms are located. Each year, approximately one billion gallons of oil is spilled in the ocean. The BP oil spill accident is just of the many oil spills that have occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. There are several events that led to this accident. Firstly was the last of control over the pressure in the well. This followed by the failure of the well blowout preventer. This is a valve which was designed to maintain consistent conditions of the well. Then the slurry cement which was used at the bottom of the well failed to contain hydrocarbon within the reservoir, which allows gas and liquids to flow up the production casing. At the same time BP and Tranocean accepted a negative pressure test which was incorrect and so integrity of the well was not established. Where there was supposed to be a separation of the mud and gas, this was not working, causing gas to vent directly on to the rig instead of being diverted overboard. The gas then flowed in to the engine room through the ventilation system which then created a potential for ignition, which was suppose to have been prevented by the rig’s fire and gas system. ...Case Study-Deepwater Zhuljeta Mujollari Post University What type of control do you think would have been most useful in this situation? Explain your choice. Feedforward control would have been very useful in this situation, especially when BP has a serious of accidents before the worst oil spill in the U.S. history happens. According to Doris Burke (2011) “each time its CEO vowed to avoid a future disaster and it failed”. Back in 2005 a high-profile explosion at Texas City kills 15 workers and injures 180. A year later another leak happens in Alaska, to be repeated again in 2009. Implying Feedforward control would have been just simple common sense. With a history of accidents, BP should have been on top of the game. Safety should have been the number one priority but BP was far away from it. Employees were ignoring the red lights for waiting-to-happen accidents and possibly because the operating personnel might have been untrained properly on the safety procedures. Using Exhibit 10-2, explain what BP could have done better. We all know BP could have done way better performance wise. They just failed to measure the actual performance by ignoring the past. They might have known what went wrong, but this is not the same as knowing how to fix it. According to Lisa Hershman (2010) BP just “lost focus on safety”. The same article says that “BP decided to trade safety for efficiency”. The company should’ve invested in its safety infrastructure, which would’ve...

...Offshore Drilling – To Drill or Not to Drill The Effects of Drilling on the Environment and Business Lydia M. Wityk Strayer University Abstract This paper will explore the business of oil companies drilling off the coast line of the United States. It will explore the benefits from the business of oil companies to the detrimental effects of the oil spills from the offshore drilling. Should we continue to drill for oil off the coast with the possibility of additional spillage into the oceans. We know that oil spills damage the environment, and the social and economic welfare of the residents in the area. At the same time the oil companies can positively affect the economy and the United State’s welfare. In comparing both sides of the argument I will look at the past and current oil companies to determine if they acted morally in their everyday business practice. At this post-BP disaster era, the United States is questioning whether we should continue to drill and expand our drilling. I will utilize the consequentialist theory to determine what would be the best next step for the U.S. to take. Using the current information gathered on BP’s business practice and the effects of the oil spill, I will weigh the ratio of good to bad to determine my opinion on whether to drill or not to drill. Off Shore Drilling – To Drill or Not to Drill The Effects of Drilling on the Environment and Business The United States has been offshore drilling for oil since...

...Political party platforms The political party platform is used to show what a parties position is on multiple issues. This paper will describe what each of the four political parties view is on the defense of marriage and strengthening of families in regards to early childhood and how each differs I’m going to start off with the Republican party of Texas which firmly believes that marriage is God-ordained and that it can only be a legal and moral commitment between a natural man and a natural woman which they consider to be a foundational unit of a healthy society. The platform opposes any type of recognition to allowing benefits to couples who label themselves as domestic partners and are not legally married. They also advocate the removal of laws that place an unfair tax on a families income. And at last the Republican party of Texas supports the traditional Judeo-Christian values on family and opposes the continued attack on these traditional values. Republicans oppose any type of government mandated pre school or kindergarten (Republicans of Texas -Strengthening families promoting life and protecting health, pg 7) Libertarians on the other hands differ completely then those of the Texas republicans. Libertarians support full protection of people from federal and state legislation that go against ones individual rights to not allow marriage base on gender orientation. They believe that the government has no authority in deciding...

...Thesis Proposal Air-conditioning Systems Simulation and Energy Saving and Economic Analysis for Waiting Hall of Tianjin Railway Station Introduction Energy saving of buildings is ever-increasingly emphasized by modern society. With the emergence of innovative technologies, new materials, and sophisticated architectural design, designers are hard to know the energy consumption of a building. It will reduce the real meaning of building's energy consumption test if we conduct this test on a building already built. Therefore, it is recommended to simulate a building's energy consumption within project design stages. Owing to the complexity of the air conditioning process and the mechanism of thermal components, the work of analysis and computation is time-consuming. Meanwhile, simulation software advantages over the traditional way in the application of design compare and equipment selection. In a nutshell, building energy simulation softwares play a vital role in the analysis of building energy consumption. Tianjin Railway Station is the main railway transport hub of Tianjin city. With the help of software to simulate its air conditioning system and conduct energy analysis, we can obtain some salutary design advices, which are beneficial to the energy saving of Tianjin Railway Station. Introduction to Waiting Hall of Tianjin Railway Station Tianjin Railway Station is located in the center of Tianjin, at the junction of Heping District, Hedong District...
