Terrorists have already expressed their intentions to continue their aggression towards United States. Their goal is to incur maximum economic damage, inflict mass casualty, spread unprecedented fear among citizens and thus destabilize the nation to further their agenda. Many critical sites lay across US maritime borders, all of which could be potential targets to accomplish these goals. All these sites are simple elements of a complex body where the vulnerability of the whole system is a function of the vulnerability of the weakest element against an adaptive adversary. It will also discuss the roles and responsibilities of the organization, its history, and how they support the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This paper will provide you with facts, highlights, and challenges germane to CBP. You will understand how CBP interacts and operates with the intelligence community and the Armed Forces in order to meet up to their responsibilities. U.S. Customs and Border Protection History The origin of Customs and Border Protection can be dated back as early as the mid-1789, when U.S. congress passed the third of three acts that provided for administering customs tariffs and collecting duties. The Tariff Act of July 4, 1789 had also been passed by Congress followed by the Duties on Tonnage statute on July 20. Another landmark in the history of CBP is the establishment of the 1891 Immigration Act, which created the Office of the Superintendent of Immigration in the Treasury Department. The act allowed for the superintendent to have oversight of the new corps of immigrant inspectors stationed at the country’s principal ports of entry (CBP.Gov, 2014). This case study will draw up real world examples on logistics on a global scale. The latter half of this discussion will explore the advantages of using containers to transport goods via sea, road and rail. Containerisation Containerisation is an inter-modal system which has been used over half a century to transport the universal cargo and non-bulk products in containers which are reinforced steel boxes (ECMT, 2005). The ease of using containers allows the flexibility to use a multi-modal system to transport the containers through road, rail, sea and air (Lowe, 2005). These containers are regulated by the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) body which sets the foundation to ensure the containers are eligible to be loaded and conserved unharmed onto container ships, railroad cars, planes and trucks. Containerisation has revolutionised the logistic industry in imports and exports, in transportation of goods to a degree that it has diminished costs to an insignificant point in the twentieth century. It may be interpreted to mean data center hosting and then subsequently dismissed without catching the improvements to hosting called utility computing that permit near realtime, policy-based control of computing resources. Or it may be interpreted to mean only data center hosting rather than understood to be the significant shift in Internet application architecture that it is. Perhaps it is the name. Certainly it is more nebulous than mnemonic, if you’ll pardon the poor pun. We happen to think so too. We’d rather use the term service grid, frankly, but that name also has its problems. The fact is that cloud and service grid computing are paradigmatically different from their common interpretations, and their use can shed light on how internet architectures are constructed and managed. Cloud computing represents a different way to architect and remotely manage computing resources. One has only to establish an account with Microsoft or Amazon or Google to begin building and deploying application systems into a cloud. These systems can be, but certainly are not restricted to being, simplistic. They can be web applications that require only http services. They might require a relational database. This philosophy is evident in McDonald’s involvement in various community projects regarding education, health care, medical research, and rehabilitation facilities. These activities help the corporation to extend their image beyond fun and entertainment into social responsibility. However, in the late 1980s, McDonald’s began to face criticism for its environmental policies, especially those surrounding polystyrene clamshell containers.
