What do you think is the major concern people have about contemporary immigration to the United States: the numbers of immigrants or their nationality? What are the functions and dysfunctions of immigration? Explain.

I actually have a two-part answer for the contemporary immigration. If this was before September 11, 2001 then I believe that it would be because of the number of immigrants. The reason why I say this is because they may feel that the more immigrants that are let into the country, then the more will try to follow and maybe overflowed the US. Another reason could possibly be that they may not be comfortable surrounded by so many diverse immigrants and may actually get nervous. Or maybe they seem no stories on TV about different immigrants and may have some type of prejudice against them because of their culture or lifestyle. If this is after September 11 them I definitely believe it is because of their nationality. Since after September 11, 2001 people have been more on edge about diverse nationalities entering the US especially those from the Middle East. Before September 11, 2001 people were so awkward about a person wearing a turban, board the plane that they are on, after September 11, 2001 people are more observant of the surroundings especially when one there is a person what a turban on the plane or even just somebody who may look like they are not from the US or maybe a descendent of someone from the middle east. For example, globalization (Schaefer 2006, chapter14, pg 11) means global integration of financial markets and government policies. In some countries, this may be illegal or even forbidden due to laws of free will. Some may feel it is a change that they may never be able to get use to, along with other laws like murder. In certain countries, the prison system is more laid about crimes than in the US and this may also be a misunderstanding on the immigrants part as by thinking laws are the same in the US.

Emory Douglas Essay

...Emory Douglas essay With a serious interest in journalism and my passion for art, it was only a matter of time before I stumbled upon Emory Douglas, the revolutionary artist. He was born in 1943 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has been a resident of California since 1951. He became the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party in 1967, a role he held until the party disbanded in the early 1980s. During the Party’s active years he served as the art director overseeing the design and layout of the Black Panther, the Party’s weekly newspaper. Douglas's artistic talents and experience proved a powerful combination: his striking collages of photographs and his own drawings combined to create some of the era's most iconic images, like that of Newton with his signature beret and large gun set against a background of a blood-red star, which could be found blanketing neighborhoods during the 12 years the paper existed. The Black Panther Party newspaper covers were bold and graphic, using just black and one color, and either illustrated by Douglas himself or with high-contrast photographs. Douglas was trained as a commercial artist at City College of San Francisco and has been the subject of several solo exhibitions. His work has also been in numerous exhibitions about the history of the Black Panther Party, including shows at the Arts & Culture Conference of the Black Panther Party in Atlanta, GA in 2008 and “The Black Panther Rank and File” at the Yerba Buena Center...
