Q. Referring to material from the unit, critically evaluate how the passage relates to issues concerning the business activities of MNCs and the concept of ethical leadership.

‘For however strong you may be in respect of your army, it is essential that in entering a new Province you should have the good will of its inhabitants.
Hence it happened that Louis XII of France, speedily gaining possession of Milan, as speedily lost it; … For the very people who had opened the gates to the French King, when they found themselves deceived in their expectations and hopes of future benefits, could not put up with the insolence of their new ruler.’

‘I conclude, therefore, that when a prince has the goodwill of the people he must not worry about conspiracies; but when the people are hostile and regard him with hatred he must go in fear of everything and everyone. Well-organized states and wise princes have always taken great pains not to make the nobles despair, and to satisfy the people and keep them content; this is one of the most important tasks a prince must undertake.’
(Machiavelli, 1513)

A.

The extract from Machiavelli’s, The Prince demonstrates a strong correlation to the issues involved in the business activities of modern day MNCs and the concept of ethical leadership. According to Resick, Hanges, Dickson, & Mitcheluson (2006), analysing data from the global leadership and organizational effectiveness (GLOBE) project, there were four key dimensions identified as global ethical leadership: character/integrity, altruism, collective motivation and encouragement. Although these were all universally recognised characteristics the degree to which these were endorsed and the significance attached to key aspects varied across different cultures. Contemporary Issues in Reward Management

...Contemporary issues in Reward management James Turley X09893504 Introduction: The organisation in question here is in the process of having a job evaluation done in different divisions of the company to make sure that there is a fair pay structure in place to act as a defence against equal value claims being made. The company is using the point factor system as a method of job evaluation where points are assigned to factors of the job in order of importance. There are different issues that arise from using this system however. It is a time consuming and complex process. The correct data is needed and the personnel manager has rushed the process of gathering data. The evaluation will be inaccurate if the data gathered is not correct. Data relevant to two years ago is being used for the job descriptions. The job role may have changed dramatically in that space of time. The personnel manager in the company has evaluated the jobs of people who he “knows quite well”. The evaluation may become personal in this instance with the personnel manager giving pay and job advantages to the people he has preference to. He may also make assumptions and be judgemental instead of using actual facts. http://moodle.ncirl.ie/course/view.php?id=52 http://books.google.ie/books?id=y5FeP6nME8wC&pg=PA70&lpg=PA70&dq=point+factor+rating+method&source=bl&ots=7sr-4Ocywi&sig=zfPONE_IIzBPpt3IDS2FEvLXUFg&hl=en&sa=X&ei=J2t0T4fEDcK3hAfc8qWnBQ&sqi=2&ved=0CBw...

...Contemporary management functions replicate thoughts from past management theories in aiming to improve and strengthen employer-employee relationships as well as improving productivity and a positive work environment for all workers. The four management functions are performed by managers in assisting to “efficiently and effectively coordinate the work of others.” (Robbins, 2012, p13) The four functions are planning, organising, leading and controlling. Hawthorne, the Myth of the Docile Worker, and Class Bias in Psychology, American Psychologist, 1981, 36(8) p 867-878. By Bramel, D, is an article written about the research conducted between 1924-1933 at the Hawthorne Plant of Western Electricity for the “development of human relations in industry.” (Bramel, 1981, p867) It also looks at identifying the relationship between numerous working conditions and productivity and output. This article emphasises how the use of the General Administrative Theory with the use of Fayol’s 14 principles of management are needed to create or maintain a strong culture within the workforce. When management functions are poorly executed by leading management, then the trust between employers and employees diminishes causing a divide between the employees and employers. This divide can cause a drop in productivity and work culture. The introduction of the general administrative theory helps reduce this divide between employee and employer; this theory is “an approach to management that focuses on...

Organizational Learning

...Knowledge Management. Contemporary Trends and Issues ORGANIZATIONAL LEARNING Povilas Brilius Baifoteka Ltd, Lithuania, povilas@baifoteka.com Abstract: Organizational Learning (OL) is recognized to have established itself as a discipline. However, it remains unclear what it is primarily focused onto – practical problem solving or theoretical descriptive analysis. Due to largely fragmented literature, sometimes interweaving concepts and a variety of attitudes, practitioners find it difficult to easily apply this field, meantime theorists call for more comprehensive understanding of OL. This article focuses on contemporary trends in OL research. It argues and unveils that current OL investigation has made a shift towards holistic and integrative approach in which individual has more powers to make a decision. Article illustrates such contemporary shift of mind by (a) summarizing most important literature in the field (b) providing examples of latest research in OL area. For a smoother analysis, author builds and applies working framework of dichotomies between concepts (dialectical approach). Keywords: organizational learning, contemporary trends, holism. JEL Classification: D800, D830 1. Introduction During the last 50-60 years Organizational Learning (OL) has undoubtedly established itself as a discipline – a number of concepts have been constructed and applied theoretically, numerous schools with distinct models have emerged. However, a question may be posed – to what...
