...Austin Alejos Ms. Garr Freshmen Convocation August 30, 2015 Freshmen Convocation Freshmen convocation was a meeting at the J. Schiedger Center for all freshmen to welcome them and talk about the university. I learned many cool new things and interesting facts. One of them was that this incoming freshmen class is the top academic class ever which is pretty cool to think since Lindenwood is the second oldest school west of the Mississippi. Another fact that I learned was that there are 815 incoming freshmen in this class and out of those there are 173 international students which is a ton. Out of those 815 freshmen, we come from 35 states and 37 countries. 518 out the 815 students have a 3.0 GPA or higher, which is 14% higher from last years’ freshmen class. Another interesting fact was that the average ACT score of the incoming freshmen is a 23.24. The President and all of the other people just talked about these facts and how proud they are of them and then the “voices only” group came on the stage and sang a couple songs for us. I learned quite a bit about the university that I did not know and was very surprised and honored to be apart of a class as high academic achieving as ours is. They also talked about all of the activities and sports they have here (which I am already on the baseball team), you can get involved in at Lindenwood and they all sounded like a lot of fun and great opportunities. I took away from that experience that this is a great and very...

...Today marked the day of Howard University’s 149th Opening Convocation. When I entered Cramton Auditorium, I was uncertain about what to expect. I had never been to convocation at a HBCU. I entered Cramton auditorium with my School of Business team and we took our seats. We didn’t know what to expect, so we decided to sit in seats in the back of the auditorium. Later, I would come to realize that sitting in these seats would be to my advantage. There were many musical performances. However, there were two that had an emotional impact on me: the National Anthem and the Negro National Anthem. These two musical selections had a major impact on me not because of the lyrics in the song, but because of the stance that students took during these performances. In most settings, audiences would stand for both anthems. However, when the choir began to sing the National Anthem, students took their seats. Once the choir began to sing the Negro National Anthem, students stood with their fists raised in the air signaling pride and black power. I also made the personal decision to sit while the choir performed the National Anthem. My moral compass would not allow me to stand for a song that sings of a country that does not stand for me. From my seat, I was able to look out at...

...Authors of both speeches, Gay marriage in America and Georgia tech freshman convocation speech, are persuasive in their own way. The first one is about gay marriages. The speaker talks with confidence as he is homosexual and has experience of bad treatment from other people. Thus, he is more capable to attract the audience attention. Not that emotionally, he describes awfulness of treatment to homosexuals describing the situation when two partners of the same sex have no opportunity to be with each other to the last minutes of live. His speech was well organized and logical from the very beginning to the end. The second speech is mostly based on emotions. Thus, Shelby, as a college student (ethos), tells very emotionally about the major things...

...On September 6th, 2012, the class of 2016 and myself experienced the first convocation address to all freshman students about the exciting upcoming year at Appalachian State. As I entered the stadium, I was surprised to see how large it was. There might have been more people at convocation than my graduation, and I had a class of 376 students. I have never seen the chancellor speak before, so it was good to hear him talk about this class of 2016. To be honest, the convocation address was not the most exciting thing to listen to in the early morning, but overall I am glad I attended this and know the leaders of this school. My favorite part of convocation was the speech by Novella Carpenter. I enjoyed watching her slideshow pictures of her urban farm in Oakland, and the stories she told behind the pictures. She was very funny as well; mentioning a cat acting like it was on acid. I admire her efforts to prove her point that urban farming can be achieved. She believes that this country is a country of isolation, with beauty but full of loneliness. Because of rural solitude, individuals are unhappy. Novella wants individuals to achieve the goal of farming without living on the countryside or in solitude, still having friends. Because having a farm in a urban city is not common, I believe Carpenter is saying that anything can be done if you put all your work and effort into it. She spent months taking care of her small farm and animals, and was a successful urban farm...

...First. Are snow days over? E-days could be replacing snow days. E-days are a good idea. This essay will explain to the reader that E-days are a good idea because they save money, education is not interrupted, and they protect schedule vacation. The first reason is that E-days save money. They save money because buses do not run. Second. So bus drivers do not need to be paid. Another reason is that the school won’t have to pay for electricity because the heat and lights won’t be on. The heat or lights can’t be on because there is no one there to turn them on. The last reason is that E-days protect schedule vacation because 1. You can go on vacation and still be able to do your work, 2. you don’t have to do your work instantly,3. And if...

...I learned that even the most innocent of people can be convicted of murder. This happens because people prey on minorities and people with mental problems. An example of an innocent minority is Walter McMillian. Walter got convicted because of his color, without having evidence. An example of an individual being targeted because of having mental problems is Jimmy Dill. Jimmy Dill got convicted because of his mental illness, and was executed in the book "Just Mercy." I learned this when experiencing Bryan Stevenson's emotions while reading and at convocation. Bryan Stevenson's emotions were passion, hard work, and heartbreak. He loved his job and had a passion for law, especially the falsely convicted. Bryan Stevenson showed hard work...

...Justin Gilmore Professor James Caplinger HUM 110 3/6/2015 “The Music of the Rolling Stones” “My concept for The Music of The Rolling Stones was to take the music as close to the originals as we could and then add the orchestral colors to enhance what the Stones had done,” says Brent Havens, the conductor of the musical event (“Ted Constant Convocation Center”). Thus, Brent is trying to recreate the era from which the Rolling Stones were a major music sensation. I was not alive when the Rolling Stones were at their peak in popularity and financial success, however, the music they have produced still can connect with any generation. The intent of the concert “The Music of the Rolling Stones” is to connect the great lyrics and songwriting of the Rolling Stones with the younger and older generations. One way the conductor Brent Havens tried to make a connection with the audience is through the use of an “amplified by a full rock band and accompanied by singer Brody Dolyniuk’s vocals” (“Ted Constant Convocation Center”). The appeal of a modern sound with that of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, “gives the music a richness”. Brody Dolyniuk said, “My goal onstage is to break down a façade,” which helps to produce a realistic feel, comparable to that of the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger (Ward). Brody portrays a similar stage presence as Mick Jagger, and also showed the audience “a few Mick Jagger (dance) moves,” in order to get a little more group participation. Although I enjoyed...

...I was able to attended convocation and listen to the whole speech by Brian Stevenson. One thing that made the experience a lot more enjoyable is that I could hear the sheer emotion in his voice when sharing his life stories. I was not able to experience this while reading the book. From the speech, I gained a better understanding of the overall message Mr. Stevenson was trying to present. His main point was each of us is, “Better than the worst thing we have ever done”. Brian used this quote to empower him to help death row prisoners in Alabama. I do agree with what he had to say. I agree that children should not be put to death no matter what the crime is. I love what he is trying accomplish and I think everyone has the right to a fair trial...

...“Marry, sir, sometimes he is a kind of puritan.” – “O, if I thought that I’d beat him like a dog!” The word ‘puritan’ was used as a term of abuse in Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’, yet fifty years earlier John Knox wrote of “the godly and zealous preachers” in his works of 1558. There is a wide scale of debate over where the biggest Puritan threat came from, and the level of success in which Elizabeth dealt with them. Overall, the biggest threat came from separatists who aimed to disband the Church of England. A rise in extreme Puritan ideology would’ve certainly been perceived as a threat. However, these threats were dealt with so effectively by Elizabeth that they could not have developed into a serious threat by the 1590s. John E Neale argues that the Settlement was challenged by a ‘Puritan Choir’ in Parliament. With hindsight, it is proven that Neale took his idea from the 17th century Puritan sympathiser Simon D’Ewes, who possessed unreliable sources. However, Elton points out that leading Puritan MPs consistently opposed features of the Settlement. This is true to some extent – Walter Strickland’s 1571 Bill to reform the Book of Common Prayer was shortly followed by the start of John Field’s Parliamentary campaign through his ‘Admonitions to Parliament’. Opposition seemed evident up until the late 1580s; in 1587 Anthony Cope’s bill demanded the publication of an English Genevan Prayer Book. The fact that Parliament allowed the bill to be read shows that it had some sympathy...
