Message from the Chairperson

Congratulations to Amity International Schools and Amity Educational Resource Centre for conducting four phenomenal editions of Amity International Model United Nations (AIMUN). Since 2010, AIMUN has successfully engaged youth from diverse nationalities and cultures in challenging debates, year after year. Globalization has virtually erased geographical boundaries and the virtual world has made distance a meaningless word. While the altered landscape has benefitted the world in many ways, new problems and challenges have surfaced too. UN simulations at AIMUN capture the trials and tribulations faced by today’s world. Proceedings in the AIMUN sensitize our delegates to international affairs and ignite their passion to bring change in a responsible and sustainable manner. Amity’s core philosophy of nurturing global leaders is so beautifully expressed in AIMUN conferences. This year we are back with renewed vigor and offer youth from across the world a dynamic platform where they will apply their young minds through discussion and debate to resolve crises which confront our world. I am confident AIMUN will, like it has earlier, inculcate the United Nations ethos in our young global leaders and inspire them to build an international community where every individual enjoys freedom of thought, speech and action. Message from Amity Educational Resource Centre

After four magnificent conferences conducted by Amity Educational Resource Centre under the guidance of Chairperson, Dr. Amita Chauhan, it gives me immense pleasure to invite you to Amity International Model United Nations 2014 conference to be held from 13th to 15th November at Amity University, Noida. Amitians have an abiding relationship with MUN conferences. Our students participate in major international conferences across the globe as also in major national level conferences in India. Intra-school MUNs are conducted in all Amity schools. To introduce young students to the ethos of United Nations, a Junior Amity Model United Nations (JAMUN) is conducted for students of Class Five. Amity draws inspiration from India’s rich cultural heritage as well as from the words and deeds of great leaders of the modern world. Valuable lessons in political realism, statecraft and diplomacy were bequeathed to us by 3rd century BCE scholar Chanakya in his treatise Arthashastra. Martin Luther King Jr. advised us to concentrate on the positive affirmation of peace rather than merely focusing on ending war and conflict. Such legacy and wisdom fires our imagination and drives our resolve to provide an enriching MUN experience to our participants in AIMUN 2014. We invite you, youth leaders and advocates of peace, to bring to AIMUN your knowledge and diplomacy skills to discuss, debate and resolve international issues to make this world a better place to live in. Amity India Model United Nations is considered the biggest and most popular conference in India. With you, we shall make AIMUN 2014 a bigger and better success! Welcome to India, welcome to Amity! All India Political Parties Meet
All India Political Parties Meet (AIPM) is a forum wherein students role-play Indian politicians hailing from various national and regional parties. AIPM gives students a platform where they deliberate upon contentious national issues. Considering the politically charged up environment topped with politically active and aware youth, simulation of such a council becomes even more relevant.

Article Response: the Cool Hunt

...The Cool Hunt Youth culture is inter-reliant on the media and marketers. Previously, fashion trends were established by “the big couture houses”, whereupon consumers would try to emulate these styles, but over the past few decades, trends are now determined by consumers and then tracked by the designers. (The Cool Hunt). Using "coolhunters" allows a company to better accommodate its customers by providing more customized merchandise. It obviously is not a perfect tool to establish current trends, but it assists marketers in better understanding its consumers. By distinguishing specific regional, cultural, and age- and gender- related differences that develop the various needs, wants, demands, and desires of different target markets, companies are given the opportunity to provide what it is that these groups are seeking; providing guidelines for what to expect. “Coolhunting is not about the articulation of a coherent philosophy of cool. It’s just a collection of spontaneous observations and predictions that differ from one moment to the next and from one coolhunter to the next.” (The Cool Hunt). Businesses often produce merchandise that has the potential to excel, but because of insufficient research, this merchandise gets directed towards the wrong market. An example of this, given from The Cool Hunt, involves a representative for Reebok. The company’s DMX RXT model was unsuccessful in its originally placed women's department, but after consulting with male consumers, it...

Cool Christmas

...Just imagine waking up to the cool crisp summer air. You can hear the river flowing just a stone’s throw away. After you load up your gear you push off the bank. The river is so calm you cut through it like glass. Each stroke of the paddle has its own distinct noise. You are going so fast that the front of your canoe pushes up a wake. These are the moments that I live for, and experienced on my senior project trip this summer. My name is Brett Jobin and I am a senior at Roscommon High School. I am three sport athlete and live a very busy life. I’ve grown up in Roscommon so the outdoors is a part of me. I did not get into canoeing until my junior year. It started off with me and a couple of buddies just going a couple of hours at a time. I wanted more. When I was thinking about what to do for my senior project a light bulb turned on upstairs. Why not do something that I’ve always wanted to do? An overnight canoe trip would be perfect, but it was not that simple. How could I gain something from a canoe trip? After some thought I realized that I knew nothing about the world known river that flows right through my town. So, why not educate myself and other people at the same time. I picked my best friend John Miller to be my partner in crime on this adventure. We took a two day canoe trip to the Mio Dam. Along the way we met a lot of different people and saw a lot of different things. We visited the chapel and the castle, but my favorite thing was the Mason Tract. It is nothing but...

We Real Cool

...Writing about Literature –Com 1102 September 28, 2011 “We Real Cool” “We Real Cool” is a very short poem that can have a different meaning and theme depending on the reader. I did some background information on Gwendolyn Brooks, the author of this poem, and I realized that knowing some of her background information really helps the reader. By knowing this information the reader can understand and appreciate her poem and its message. During a public reading Mrs. Brooks is known for saying, “I wrote [We Real Cool] because I was passing by a pool hall in my community one afternoon during school time, and I saw, therein, a little bunch of boys – I say there in this poem, seven – and they were shooting pool. Instead of asking myself, “Why aren’t they in school?” I asked myself, ‘I wonder how they feel about themselves?’ and just perhaps they might have considered themselves contemptuous of the establishment…” (Shmoop Editorial Team) This quote helps the reader understand the thought process of Brooks and helps define the general message of how the boys were wasting their time. “We Real Cool” has astoundingly only a subtitle and eight lines. The first sentence we read which is the subtitle says, “The Pool Players. /Seven at the Golden Shovel.” (860) Brooks starts the poem by introducing seven pool players at a local pool hall called the “Golden Shovel”. (860) I found the name of the pool hall intriguing because it means much more than a shovel that is gold. Gold can imply...

Summary of We Real Cool

...It is evident that the poem “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks (1960) is a group of school age kids that are living on the “edge” so to speak. They leave school to go play pool, drink, and just be carefree with no concern of their education or their safety. Brooks (1960) used the words, “We Sing sin. We Die soon” which implies that they will die at an early age because of the life style they live it suggest they are living day by day on the street. The tone and irony are two literary devices used in this poem. The tone in the beginning is somewhat uplifting, but then quickly becomes saddened at the end when death is suggested. The other would be irony which is used many times throughout the poem. Brooks (1960) uses “SEVEN AT THE GOLDEN SHOVEL”, to set the scene of the poem. The word seven and golden usually implies lucky and money. The irony used: a pool hall would not normally be golden, it is usually very dark and a shovel usually brings hard work to mind and they are using a pool stick that doesn’t require any hard work. Just fun and games. The literary devices chosen implied that they have no real direction in their lives and no concern what so ever of their education or even themselves. Listening to the poem read aloud gives a whole different meaning in my thoughts and is so beneficial. Gwendolyn Brooks gives an introduction of the reading before she reads the poem aloud and explains why she wrote the poem. She saw these boys in passing of a pool...

Karma

...n Karma Project 4/16/12 Firehouse & Christian Caring Center For my karma project I decided to visit with a couple of semi-local volunteer organizations. Of course this was by no means a routine event for me, so I was a bit on edge about the tasks I may have had to complete but everything ended up being copasetic. Aside from the fact they had me participating in extensive physical labor, the experience turned out to be quite memorable. Friday mornings I had hot dates with the Christian Caring Center. She fed me well, which was always a happy ending I just had to work for it. Wednesday nights, and weekends I got a chance to put on my handyman hat at the firehouse. Cool experience where I got a chance to establish there are a lot more positive people in the world than I could have ever imagined. In a way, it’s almost like they only present themselves to those who seek them. This project has given me a chance to reconnect with an intention I’ve set for myself a long time ago. Today I feel as if the path I’ve procrastinated taking for so long is no longer under construction. The first time I stepped foot into the Christian Caring Center I met a few ladies that took down my information and gave me “The word”. I actually felt a little bad for thinking they came off a bit excessive, until I heard a homeless (Muslim) lady chew them out for down talking on her and her beliefs. Anyway, after I was settled into their system I was sent downstairs to help in the kitchen. I stepped...

Personal Responsibility

...draft My Responsibility Becoming the best person in life is your own personal responsibility. What you say, think, or do is a part of being a human, but you are accountable it’s your responsibility. Getting an education is my personal responsibility to become a better person. Having a preliminary plan is the key to success in education and everyday life. Our mind is like a sponge it observes everything and it’s our personal responsibility to choose the right path of life. Taking responsibility for ones actions and the consequences behind is personal responsibility in my opinion. It is all about you and the choices you choose in life, even if it’s good or bad. In life we all go through that stage where we want to fit in with the cool crowd. We have to go through things to find out that being a follower is not all that it seems. The time comes when being ourselves is all that matters; it’s a part of personal responsibility. Continuing my education is my personal responsibility and not putting it on hold anymore is a responsibility. Having to go to college and not get a job in that field can be so discouraging. It made me not even want to try again at the college world. Having to work jobs that only paid bills, and barely did open my eyes up to going back to college. I told myself that maybe that wasn’t my career path it was my responsibility to see what was. Setting a good example for my three boys that education is the key to success. Having a preliminary plan for my...

...on the 'likes' we get on social media for approval of things we wish to do in life? We might be getting 100s of likes on our posts and pictures but since we've raised the bar so high, imagine the plight of those people who fail to get 'likes' on their pictures and posts- their self-esteem and confidence will be shattered. If they don't get 'likes' on their pictures/posts which in 'their opinion' is the best (no one would put up something which in their opinion isn't good), they'd start hating themselves and might also run into depression. They start copying the so-called 'cool people' on facebook who get 100s of likes on their posts/pictures and in this process, they also run the danger of losing their own individuality and identity. They try to be someone else. In this sense, we're breeding herd mentality among our youth through Social Media. I always tell people, being part of the crowd can be all 'cool and fun' but the crowd always follow the ones who stand out. Through this post, I wish to give voice to those so-called 'average people' on facebook who might not have 100s of likes on their posts and pictures but have beautiful, energetic young minds full of new ideas. Be what you are! You don't need a handful of 'likes' to get the society's approval. Be original and add 'your' value to the world, we have enough 'copies' around. We don't need to beg for 'likes' through personal messages, friendly calls or texts- realize that you were...

...Kristen’s Cookie Co. – Katherine Fanola Individual Assignment Question 1: Draw a Flow Diagram Question 2: How long will it take to fulfill a rush order? The answer is 26 minutes. First, the customer will order which will not take any time. Then, Kristen begins by washing and mixing which will have a cycle time of 6 minutes. Next, spooning will take Kristen 2 minutes, leaving a finish time at 8 minutes (6 min+2min). Then Kristen’s roommate will heat the oven which will take 1 minute leaving a finish time of 9 minutes (8 min+1 min). The cookies will bake for 9 minutes leaving a finish time of 18 minutes (9 min+9 min). Time for the cookies to unload and cool down will then be an additional 5 minutes leaving a finish time of 23 minutes (18 min+5 min). Last step is for customer to pay and for the money to be collecting taking a total of 3 more minutes and leaving a finish time of 26 minutes (23 min + 3 min). Therefore, total time to fulfill a rush order is 26 minutes. Question 3: How many orders can you fulfill in a night, assuming you are open for 4 hours each night? The answer is 22 dozen cookies. Operating for 4 hours in a night is equivalent to operating for 240 minutes. If each order size is one dozen cookies, then order completion time for 1 batch will be 26 minutes. Then, the time for every additional dozen of cookies after that will take 10 minutes. It will take 236 minutes for 22 dozen cookies to be ordered in this case, and it will take 246...

Cool Is Cool

...Cool is Cool To be cool or not to be cool… That is actually the issue, which almost all teenagers live by. Cool means pretty much the same as being “in” or to be popular. Some People Thinks it is cool smoking, other people thinks skateboarding is cool. But what is cool? Is it the way you act? The way you dress? The way you talks? There are a lot of opinions about that subject, what do you think is cool? The companies do a lot to make you think that their products are cool. They pay celebrities to wear their products and make commercials. It’s different what people do to look cool, some people read fashion magazines other peoples dress like their idols and the celebrities got stylists to dress them. The most people buy the popular brands and dress like celebrities or just using special words or slang in their sentences. Some walks on a special way or have a distinct style. Cause being cool is not just the way you dress, it is also your attitude and the way you act. But being cool is different from age to age. When you are a little child it’s about having the newest toy car or Barbie-doll. As a teenager it’s about wearing the right brands, having the newest cell phone and things like that. And when you grow up it’s about having the biggest car, eating on the right restaurants and having biggest house. All the companies that makes clothes today are doing a lot to get the people think it’s they’re product that is in right now, they make commercial and thinks like that, they...

Mystery Shopping

...of the mystery shopper service I had applied to a couple months ago. "We have a mystery shopping assignment in your area and we would like you to participate". My first thought was hey this is cool -- I'll get some free merchandise and get paid for just shopping The first thing I discovered is that these people are always in a hurry. They wanted to get the paperwork to me, have me sign and return a confidentiality agreement do the shopping, fill out the paper work and have it back to them in less than a week. Next I found that I wouldn't be getting any free merchandise with this assignment. I was to go shopping for tires and get estimates then return my findings to the research firm. They told me I would be paid $20 for each location and they had three locations in my area. That didn't sound too bad. I'd be paid $60 for visiting three tire stores. I then found out that what was described as "my area" was a little farther than I would have defined. The first one was a 20 minute drive the second one a 45 minute drive and the third one was an hour and a half away. I told the representative that the third one was too far for me. She pleaded a while and then finally offered to pay me an extra $20 to do it. I'm a nice guy so I reluctantly agreed. All went smoothly and I earned my cool $80 for the assignment. Let's see how much I made per hour. I had about five hours of driving time, one hour dealing with the sales people (20 minutes each), and about two hours total doing the...

It takes twenty-seven minutes to fill a rush order of one dozen cookies because it takes 1 minute to receive, read, print, and send reply to the customer order; 6 minutes to place all the ingredients of the order into a mixing bowl, up to three dozen cookies worth, and mix; 2 minutes to spoon the cookie dough onto a tray, a dozen per tray; 10 minutes to put the cookie into the one tray capacity oven, set the timer, and bake the cookies; 5 minutes to take the cookies out of the oven and let them cool; 2 minutes per dozen to take the cookies off the tray and carefully pack them into a box; and 1 minute to accept payment for the order. The overall process takes 19 minutes per dozen and a constant 8 minutes for every order under four dozen cookies because of each order under four dozen will always take 2 minutes to receive and accept payment for the order and 6 minutes to mix ingredients up three dozen cookies worth. So for a rush order of two dozen it will take 46 minutes and a rush order of three dozen will take 65 minutes. 2. How many orders can you fill in a night, assuming you are open four hours each night? Assuming all orders are only one dozen, we could fill 24 orders in a night because the bottleneck resource of the process, which determines the capacity of the whole process, is the baking in the oven. Baking takes 10 minutes giving it the lowest capacity of all the steps and the capacity of the whole process...

Driving Vs Driving Research Paper

...different states along the way. During one of my vacations to Florida, we were driving through Georgia and I realized how much I love the beautiful state. It is warm, there are palm trees, and the landscape is just inviting. While driving one can see a lot of different types of regions and vehicles. My friends brother and dad love to look for fancy cars on the road while traveling. They keep track of how many of each type of car that was on the road. While driving on the freeway I like to look for all of the different license plates. It is so cool to be driving next to a vehicle from a state that is far away from where I have been. When flying on vacation people do not get to see all of the landscape that he/she would get to see if they drove. One does get to see the clouds and the possible thunderstorms while flying, though. I flew to Florida for a 4-H trip, while landing in Orlando we were surrounded by storm clouds, it was cool to be in the middle of a thunderstorm. I had a layover in Atlanta, Georgia and I did not get to see any of the beautiful state, I was a little upset about this. There is more opportunities to get to spend quality time with family while driving to vacation destinations as opposed to flying. On my family trips we spend hours in the car, during this time we get to talk about everything under the sun. I enjoy spending this time bonding with my family while traveling hours in a vehicle. When driving it usually takes longer to get to your destination...
