...mysterious and lively country, wrapped in a cloak of shadows and adventure, and in real life you discover when you travel to the “Kingdom of Denmark” as it is called by its people, it is much more than that. It’s the hub of Northern European travel. Denmark is the smallest Scandinavian country, with a modest 4.5 million people, but it’s so packed with history and intrigue that I’m convinced that everyone must travel to Denmark once in their life to experience a locale of unparalleled richness, and all the things you would desire travel to take you between “Heaven and Earth”. The best way to travel to Denmark, the nation of Hans Christian Anderson, splendid modernist and gothic architecture and Scandinavian delights, is to fly straight to Copenhagen or Kobenhavn as it’s spelled in Denmark, and become immediately astounded! The warm, mild June air will dance across your face, and the sun will shine bright. It’s the largest and most cosmopolitan city to travel to in Denmark and all of Scandinavia, but it’s a perfect blend of metropolitan delights; like shopping, dining, and entertainment, while being so close to historical sites with Viking ruins, medieval castles, and rolling countryside. So, travel to Denmark! Also, it’s such a pleasure to travel to countries that still have a traditional King or Queen, to really...

The Others

...The Carlsberg Group is a Danish brewing company it was founded in 1847 by Jacob Christian Jacobsen mostly known as J.C. Jacobsen. He established his first brewery on a hill outside of Copenhagen. J.C. Jacobsen then, decides to name the brewery after his son Carl and on the bjerg (hill) on which the brewery was built on. Due this innovation, Carlsberg played such a big part of Copenhagen’s history. In 1868, Carlsberg began exporting to other neighboring countries in Eastern Europe. The first barrel of Carlsberg was exported to a grocer in Edinburgh, Scotland. Within that year, the lager became very popular in Scotland and other countries such as India, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Jumping forward a hundreds years, in 1970 Carlsberg and another renowned Danish brewer merge together called Tuborg. Together the breweries developed their business with exporting, licensing agreements, and breweries outside of Denmark. To further their growing export Carlsberg and Tuborg combined under one name becoming the United Brewery’s. This combination has enabled their unique lager for global export as well as continental styles for both domestic and foreign markets. During that profitable time, one of the most important markets to the United Breweries was Great Britain. The United Brewery’s two main brands were at one’s disposal in essentially every European country. Moving into the 1990’s, export sales were declining both on Eastern and Western Europe, yet Carlsberg achieved modest but still...

Reflections

...Dan Elder Journal Reflections The flight to from Cedar Rapids to Chicago took me back to the many times I have flown from cedar rapids to embark on my many vacations I have had with my family. But it was different because I was not going with my parents I was going with a few friends and tons of new people I had not met yet. When I got to Chicago I got a better chance of meeting everyone and I knew I was going to be making some new friends right away. The flight to London was like nothing I have never done before because I have never had to fly for that long before and since I could not fall asleep it was a very long flight indeed. The in-flight dinners were a lot better than I thought they would be I was expecting something way worse and they actually were not bad at all to eat I was pleasantly surprised. The airport at Heathrow was really big and it was a surprise to me that we were driving on the left side of the road even though I knew they did that in England it still came as a surprise to actually see it in action. The second flight went by very quickly for me because I was so excited to get to Denmark. Some of the first things that I noticed when I got Denmark that was different were all the biking and walking everyone does. Also the fact that everything is more expensive in Europe as compared to the United States it came as a real shock to me but I should have realized that with all the taxes they have that it has to be. The McDonalds in Europe was also a surprise the...

Box sector to undergo further rationalisation over long-term as weaker lines are marginalised Maersk Line is concentrating on organic growth. AP MOLLER-Maersk chief executive Nils Andersen is forecasting further rationalisation in the container shipping industry in the coming years, with smaller lines struggling to compete against the big global players. Although Maersk Line is concentrating on organic growth, having just signed a $1.9bn deal for a series of 18,000 teu vessels, Mr Andersen said he expects to see consolidation over the long-term as weaker operators find themselves marginalised. “We believe the world will develop in a way where smaller players will find it increasingly difficult to put their mark on the industry,” Mr Andersen said shortly after reporting that the group had made record profits in 2010 as its container shipping division powered back into the black. “Some consolidation will happen, although whether through takeovers, or because more marginal players cannot find investors to back their plans, I don’t know.” Over the years, the Danish group has been one of the most active players in the container shipping consolidation process, having bought Safmarine, Sea-Land...

Debt Policy at Ust Inc.

...Harvard Business School 9-200-069 Rev. May 3, 2001 Debt Policy at UST Inc. In December 1998, UST Inc.’s board of directors approved a plan to borrow up to $1 billion over five years to accelerate its stock buyback program.1 For UST Inc., the leading producer of moist smokeless tobacco products and a company widely known for its conservative debt policy and high dividend payout (uninterrupted cash dividends since 1912), this announcement generated considerable attention on Wall Street. Investors eagerly awaited the subsequent actions of Vincent Gierer, Jr., UST’s Chairman and CEO. In 1997, UST had suspended its stock repurchase program, approved in 1996, because of legislative and legal issues confronting the tobacco industry.2 In November 1998, the company signed the Smokeless Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement resolving its potential state Medicaid liability and reinstated its repurchase program.3 Management believed that this agreement represented significant progress with respect to the legal and legislative matters confronting the company, permitting UST to proceed with its business strategy and potential recapitalization. INTRODUCTION Ecuadorian economy has shown a sustained growth in recent years, allowing to the Ecuadorian government to invest in health, education, housing, and some projects for the strengthening of the country. However, it is necessary to control and reduce costs as subsidies. There are subsidies, which are targeted to certain groups of the population according to their characteristics. For example, the Solidarity bonus is a subsidy that is targeted to people in the poorest municipalities in the country and whose income is too low.
