Animal Interactions Essay

Of course there are numerous stories of animals viciously attacking other animals and news segments showcasing how brutal animals can be to humans, but all animals aren’t competitive (when organisms try to obtain food, water, space, sunlight, and other resources at the same place and time) in nature. If one were to hear that statement, they might think that animals are only agreeable within their own population of species, but this is also not true. Undomesticated animals have a bad reputation of being very competitive, which is a common misconception among many people. Symbiosis, the predator-prey cycle, and mimicry are all three common forms of organism interactions that are not competitive.

No organism lives in complete isolation, which means that there will always be some sort of interaction between organisms. This can be described as symbiosis, a Greek rooted word meaning “living together”. Symbiosis entails the many relationships an organism can have with another organism; the one that is most beneficial to this essay would be mutualism. Mutualism is an interaction between two or more organisms where both/all organisms are benefited. Sea anemones and anemone fish have great mutualistic relationships such as how the sea anemones use their tentacles to protect the anemone fish away from predators while the anemone fish protect the sea anemones from butterflyfish.

Even though animals may consume each other, they still help one another by doing so. Taking centuries to show change, the organisms adapt to better hunt/capture (predator) or to defend or flee (prey). This is due to evolution, the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the Earth. The benefits of evolution are brought to the young of young of the species which will advance the future species as a whole. One example of this would be bats and how they’re lack of use of their eyes contributed to the growth in their ears overtime to better hear ultrasonic sound frequencies.

Mimicry is another non-competitive relationship between organisms. The main two being Mullerian mimicry, a natural phenomenon in which two or more poisonous species, that may or may not be closely related and share one or more common predators, have come to mimic each other's warning signals, and Batesian mimicry, a form of mimicry typified by a situation where a harmless species has evolved to imitate the warning signals of a harmful species directed at a common predator. In both cases, one species of prey mimic other harmful species of prey to void off predators. This is not to be directly linked to the adaptations of evolution because this adaptation can occur within a single lifetime. The Heliconius butterflies in the tropic Western Hemisphere is famous for it’s Mullerian mimicry.

Not all organisms are competitive by nature. As clearly shown above with symbiosis, the predator-prey cycle inducing evolution, and mimicry, organisms can have relationships with other organisms without competition. Competitiveness between different organisms is not false, it just does not happen between all organisms, in all situations. That’s just one of the common misconceptions among people.

...Ryland T. Johnson Mrs.Worley Art 1301 PowerPoint Summary Ashurbanipal Hunting lions The Ashurbanipal hunting lion is a 5’4 relief from circa 645-640 B.C.E. It was created for the Assyrian ruler of the Elamite Susua for his palace in Nineveh, Iraq. The Assyrians artists Portrayed archers pursuing enemies as well as royal hunts in and enclosed arena, just like the One depicted in the hunting lion’s relief. Hunting of the lions was a sport reserved for kings. These hunts were symbolic of the ruling monarch’s duty to protect and fight for his people. The kings would often go lion hunting for political and religious purposes. If they were good at Hunting the Gods would favor them. The kings are often portrayed on the plains of Syria but there were no lions so, they had to ship them from Africa. To get a lion out of his cage a servant would lift the gate and start running. The hunting lions would then see the king and the servant and he would the charge them. The king would then ride his chariot with his bow and arrow or spear. In some of the figures I notice that he carries an empty bow, I determined that all the lions were wounded that lie about beneath and past the moving chariot and have been hit by Ashurbipal’s bow. Most hunts by everyday men usually take place in the wild, land of unpredictable outcomes And unknown beasts but a royal hunt would be contained. Containment would allow a controlled environment to ensure the kings safety and...

...Chapter 5 Summary There are many different kinds of ink. In our experiment, we will use tea bags as the main component of our ink. Having two different set-ups will provide the chance to compare the colors and consistencies. Cornstarch is an efficient additive to have the right consistency of the product. Also vinegar is also efficient, though there is no obvious change in color, it was seen that it gave the ink a consistent color whether wet or dry. Conclusion *Tea bags can be used to create an ink. *Vinegar can strengthen the color of the product, ink. *Cornstarch effectively contributes to achieving to the right consistency of the ink. *The processes boiling and straining are efficient in taking the extract out of the tea bags. We therefore conclude that one can create an improvised ink using the extract from tea bags. This will be very convenient and cheap because the ingredients to be used are commonly found around the house. Also, the said processes, boiling and straining, are efficient and can be easily done. Recommendation Based on the conducted experiment ,we recommend the following for futher improvements. To have better results of extraction, suggest that there would be longer minutes of boiling. We also recommend that one should make use of a large amount of cornstarch, a thickening agent, so the application of ink would be done easier. Instead of directly placing your desired amount of cornstarch in the...

...Excel Tutorial to Improve Your Efficiency (2007 Version) Introduction My purpose with this Excel tutorial is to illustrate some Excel tips that will dramatically improve your efficiency. I make no attempt to be as encyclopedic as some of the 800-page Excel manuals available. I concentrate on common tasks, not every last thing that can be done in Excel. Also, I presume that you have some Excel knowledge. For example, I assume you know about rows and columns, values, labels, and formulas, relative and absolute addresses, and other basic Excel elements. If you know virtually nothing about Excel, you probably ought to work through an “Excel for Dummies” book and then work through this tutorial. The style of this tutorial should be easy to follow. Main topics appear in bold black type. Specific direction headings are in yellow, and these are followed by detailed directions in red. Additional comments about the directions appear in blue. Then there are “Try it!” exercises in green. These “Try it!” exercises are a key feature of this tutorial. I have embedded numerous sample Excel spreadsheets so that you can try out the directions right away—without switching into Excel. When you double-click on one of these spreadsheets, you launch Excel, and the spreadsheet “comes alive.” The menus and toolbars even change to those for Excel. By clicking outside one of these spreadsheets, you’re back in Word. The easiest way to maneuver around this tutorial is to switch to outline view. To do...
