...Multiple-product & Various Truck Capacities Cross-docking Problem Introduction Customer demands are getting more complicated and even harder to be satisfied nowadays. It is highly needed for the company to have such flexibility, agility and reliability in terms of answering the demand requests from their customers. But their limitations in improving customer satisfaction might be a big problem for them and the operation of single company can have a bad impact on those of the other companies in the supply chain, meaning that if one company fails to fulfill the demands required, it will affect the related companies and obviously will put them in jeopardy in terms of customers trust and the cost they would have to spend. Therefore, improving supply chain management is really attractive for those companies looking to efficiently improve their customer satisfaction. Apte and Viswanathan (2000) stated that distribution process is responsible for 30% of an item price and this is the reason why there are a lot of companies trying their very best to develop new distribution strategies in order to manage their product flow in efficient manner. Cross docking is definitely one of those strategies people believe to be an efficient strategy to minimize inventory and to reduce cycle times. Apte and Viswanathan (2000) also defined cross docking as the continuous process to the final destination through the cross-dock storing products and materials in the distribution center. When cross-docking...

...to Loren G. Stern, stop and frisk legislation has only recently become a subject of national concern and debate, the police power to detain and question is as old as the common law of England. Detention and questioning were well known too, and strongly enforce under the English common law. Early case holdings and statues empowered the night watch of each town to detain “suspicious nightwalkers” until the morning at which time the watchman would either release the suspect or arrest him if grounds for arrest were discovered. Even private individuals were authorized to detain suspicious night-walkers until they gave a proper account of themselves. In 1839 the English Parliament extended the common law power to detain by authorizing police to search any vessel, carriage, and persons who could be reasonably suspected of possessing stolen goods. A number of state courts of the United States having followed the English common law and in the absence of statutory provisions have upheld the power of police officers to stop, question and frisk suspects under reasonable circumstances. These courts have found that the police have a duty to stop and to question under circumstances “which reasonably require investigation and to frisk as incident to inquiry (Stern, 1967).” Policy (Gonzalez, 2012)The Center for Constitutional Rights describes stops and frisk as “the practice by which a police officer initiates a stop of an individual on the street allegedly based on reasonable suspicion of...

...On Oct. 13, 2010, 33 miners who had been trapped underground for more than two months all returned to the surface after a successful rescue operation that inspired Chile and riveted the world. The miners traveled up a narrow, nearly half-mile rescue shaft in a specially designed capsule. The final phase of the long rescue effort took roughly 22 hours. Luis Urzúa, the shift leader who organized the miners’ lives while they were underground, was the last to come up. Many of the miners came bounding out of their rescue capsule as pictures of energy and health, able not only to walk, but, in one case, to leap around, hug everyone in sight and lead cheers. Their apparent robustness was testimony to the rescue diet threaded down to them through the tiny borehole that reached them on Aug. 22, but also to the way they organized themselves to keep their environment clean, find water and get exercise. The miners hoped to sell their stories as well as file a lawsuit against the mining company. But one year after their globally televised rescue, after the worldwide spotlight faded and the trips and offers dwindled, the miners said that most of them were unemployed and that many were poorer than before. The emotional distress has been more lasting than the publicity. In October 2011, nine miners were receiving sick-leave pay for prolonged post-traumatic stress; a handful of others say they are seeing private therapists. Background On Aug. 5, 2010, a gold and copper mine near...

...NYTimes.com March 12, 2011 Google’s Quest to Build a Better Boss By ADAM BRYANT Mountain View, Calif. IN early 2009, statisticians inside the Googleplex here embarked on a plan code-named Project Oxygen. Their mission was to devise something far more important to the future of Google Inc. than its next search algorithm or app. They wanted to build better bosses. So, as only a data-mining giant like Google can do, it began analyzing performance reviews, feedback surveys and nominations for top-manager awards. They correlated phrases, words, praise and complaints. Later that year, the “people analytics” teams at the company produced what might be called the Eight Habits of Highly Effective Google Managers. Now, brace yourself. Because the directives might seem so forehead-slappingly obvious — so, well, duh — it’s hard to believe that it took the mighty Google so long to figure them out: “Have a clear vision and strategy for the team.” “Help your employees with career development.” “Don’t be a sissy: Be productive and results-oriented.” The list goes on, reading like a whiteboard gag from an episode of “The Office.” “My first reaction was, that’s it?” says Laszlo Bock, Google’s vice president for “people operations,” which is Googlespeak for human resources. But then, Mr. Bock and his team began ranking those eight directives by importance. And this is where Project Oxygen gets interesting. For much of its 13-year history, particularly the early years, Google has taken...

...stands at 1,587,588 as of this writing). This number grows by almost 2000 every single day. Compared to this the number of articles in Encyclopedia Britannica (over 122,264) is a far cry. More than a million people visit Wikipedia every day (more than half of whom visit the English language pages). 5 out of every 100 internet users visit Wikipedia daily. Only 11 other sites are visited by more people. Wikipedia is very often at the top of Google search results (almost always in the top 10 results) for things ranging from ideologies (communism - 1, capitalism - 1); sports (cricket - 2, football - 3); sciences (economics - 1, literature - 3); places (India - 1, France - 1, Budapest - 2); people (Sachin Tendulkar - 1, Einstein - 2); objects (water - 2, chair - 1). Many things are taking place here. On the one hand, articles are being created at a rate, depth, and detail, which are utterly unprecedented. For instance, Wikipedia has detailed and easily accessible articles about "Triskaidekaphobia" and "Perfidious Albion" while a careful search did not reveal any relevant articles in Britannica. On the other hand, more and more people are consulting, quoting, referring to Wikipedia on any number of issues. It is rare to see a blog post these days which does not link to Wikipedia for the background info on some topic. This is the reason for the high Google page rank for the Wikipedia entries on any issue under the sun.We notice then a couple of reasons for this mammoth phenomenon: extensiveness...

...user (Google, nod.). In order to increase revenue, Google must increase the number of places where it can display advertisements. Google continually creates new products which provide new advertising opportunities for Google. The advertiser is concerned with the amount of sales volume generated by the Google advertisement. Because a user is specifically searching for a topic when an ad is presented, Google advertisements are relevant to the user. When a user views a relevant ad, there is a greater likelihood that the user will purchase the product or service. Google’s contribution to advertising relevance is the hybrid paid search ranking scheme which rank search ads based on the combination of bid price and click through rate. By adding click through rate, Google not only maximized income but also increased the relevance of those paid search ads (Moran, 2008). 2. How does Google’s information systems strategy support its business strategy? Enterprise Alignment is defined by Fonstad and Subramani as IT and business managers working together to coordinate potential synergies across business units and local alignment efforts such as creating an efficient and effective shared IT infrastructure platform,...

...April 30, 2012 Current Event Ethical Dilemma On February 26th of this year, in the town of Sanford, Florida, 28 year old George Zimmerman shot and killed 17 year old Trayvon Martin with a 9mm pistol. Mr. Zimmerman claims this was in self-defense. Trayvon was armed with an Arizona Ice Tea beverage and a package of candy Skittles he had just bought from the local convenience store. The Sanford Police Department questioned Mr. Zimmerman and then released him without arrest, using the “Stand Your Ground” law as his defense. In this horrific situation the Police Department had a moral if not legal, responsibility to further detain and even arrest this man, on the ethical principles of Privacy, Respect for Persons, and Beneficence on behalf of the victim. The Right to Privacy for every person means the right to be free from intrusions into ones physical body, space, mind and personal information. This includes the right to be free from bodily restraint in any way or of having to disprove another’s perception of our attire. The Bill of Rights supports the ethical principle, Right to Privacy, specifically with the 14th Amendment, Amendment IV, which covers privacy of the person and possessions with the following: The right of the person to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing...
