Pool

We grow up with all these expectations on how we should live our lives, how we should educate ourselves in a certain direction, and especially how our bodies should look. The female body in particularly is being held under the gun. Every day we see commercials or magazines with bone-skinny models dressed in nothing less than a bikini. These commercials stage the models to look like their life is the “perfect way of living” and of course that their bodies are the most desirable in the world. It gives a feeling that if you want to be someone or have any success in your life, then you need to become one of these models. This is undermining the self-confidence of many females who are not as skinny or “perfect” as these excessive desires. But is it at all necessary? Can it be that women really have to look like these abnormal photo shopped models, or do men actually in most cases find them attractive just the way they are?

In the short story “Pool” written by Corey Campbell in 2009, we meet a young woman named Darla. She and her boyfriend Jon are at a pool party at their friends Trevor and Mandy’s house where the story takes place. Their house is located in the Valley in “ … a neighbourhood of small square houses”., where Trevor, Mandy and their little child live. The neighbourhood is described as the home of car thieves and people in their early twenties, who cannot afford to buy their own house. Already in the beginning the setting is described in many details. “She counted more than 64 photos of a child on the walls, shelves, and piano“. The house is built in the 70s which is evident in the orange and green coloured kitchen. Through these descriptions a clear image of a house with many pictures on the walls, lots of toys on the floor, a kitchen from the 70s and a pool in the patio is created in the readers mind.
The story is told by a third person limited narrator which tells the story as if you were present in it, but from Darla’s perspective and her perception of the events that take place “Darla touched her middle, which felt like a void”. It makes it easier to know what Darla feels in certain situations, and how she interprets her surroundings.
Darla is a young woman in her twenties. She is very shy when it comes to her capabilities, and her body in particular. “”A little later,” she said, knowing that she wouldn’t, that she hated others seeing her in a swimsuit”. She is not at all comfortable with her body, and in general she seems to lack confidence. This is obvious when she talks with Mandy about having kids, and she tells her that she probably would not be able to take care of a child. She thinks very little of herself, and does not believe that she would ever be able to manage larger challenges. “I don’t know how anyone does it”.
This insecurity is also reflected in her relationship with Jon, which appears already at the beginning of the story, were it is told that Darla knows that their relationship is not going to last. The day before the pool party the condom split during intercourse, and it resolves in Darla taking an emergency contraceptive pill. She is in no way comfortable with the situation, and has many thoughts about it throughout the day. Jon does not seem to care about the situation what so ever, and is not in any way as affected as Darla. The way he deals with this is by leaving her alone instead of talking with her about it, which again is a sign of their callous relationship. She knows that they are going to break up eventually and she fells like he is not giving her the attentions that she needs, but still she will not break up with him. This could be because she does not think that she can get any better due to her low self-esteem, or that she needs the little feeling of comfort that he despite everything can still give her.
At the end of the story Darla is taken to the bedroom by Trevor to find a swimsuit so she can get in the pool. She is still not comfortable with the thought of jumping in a swimsuit, but when she is about to change in to it she makes Trevor stay whilst taking her clothes of. She stands completely naked in front of him, and takes the suit on very slow. Even though it did not fit her in any way, she did not care anymore and smiled confident while asking Trevor if they should go back to the patio.
Showing her naked body to another man and seeing his reaction to her nudity, gave her the confidence and proof that she is beautiful, and she has nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to her body, which is also the main theme. Do not let all the commercials and skinny models fool you to think that you are not good enough when you are exactly quite that, and do not attribute these thoughts that you should make extreme and unhealthy changes to yourself to look different. There is no need.

Essay About the Short Story: Pool by Corey Campbell

...Essay about the short story: Pool by Corey Campbell The short story “Pool” is about the couple Darla and Jon. The overarching theme in the story is: unhappiness in relationships, and failing marriages which both are very relevant to the society in which we live in. The author (Cory Campbell) is trying to shed some light on how it is being in an unhappy relationship. The main character Darla is a young woman, and even though we aren’t told her age, based on the quotes: “Darla herself, just older than the couple” and “now they were in year four”, I would conclude that the other couple are in their mid-twenties which I take to mean that she is in her late twenties. Darla doesn’t want kids, which is one of the minor themes in the short story. She isn’t very confident in her looks which we can conclude from this snippet of the text: “she hated others seeing her in her swimsuit”. Darla is in an unhappy relationship with Jon, which after their condom split is tenser than before. They have been a couple for just under a year, and Darla has recently realized that she isn’t happy in their relationship which we can see in this quote from the text: “what she liked best about him, Darla realized earlier in the car, was that it wasn’t going to last”. He is also pressuring her to do things she doesn’t want to do throughout the entire short story, for example when he is trying to get her to drink alcohol even though she isn’t allowed to drink, because of the morning-after pill that she...

...a free essay on "Pool - Corey Campbell" from Anti Essays, your source for free research papers, essays, and term paper examples. Everyone is searching for happiness. But where do you actually find it. Nuclear family often seems to be the answer, but is it really true? Is it possible to love someone so much that you cannot sleep at night? Or are people just pretending? Is it at good idea, to just pull two things together and expect it is going to work? Corey Campbell tries in the short story “Pool” written 2009, to define happi-ness, love and pooling things together. Darla is the main character of the story. She might be a middle-aged woman, the text does not say directly, but she is maybe in the late thirties. “Darla herself, just older than the couple, had been pulled to the party by her boyfriend…”(p.1ll. 8-9). The couple Trevor and Mandy has been married four years and have a little baby girl together, the may be in their late twenties. Jon is Darla’s boyfriend they have been together for under a year. Darla is not happy in the relation-ship. She does not love Jon. “What she liked best about him, Darla had realized earlier in the car, was that it wasn’t going to last, so she didn’t have to care that much really” (p.1 ll. 12-13). It is obvious that she does not care about Jon. Jon on the other hand is willing to do a lot for Darla. One day earlier Darla and Jon were having sex, but the condom broke. Darla was afraid that she was pregnant. Right before the pool party she...

...Essay about "Pool" by Corey Campbell We've all tried to be in that kind of relationship which didn't really fitted us, growth us or made us happy. Where the relationship was going okay, but never really was enough. The insecurity in the relationship affects the persons in it, and truly gives a lower self-esteem. It makes the person insecure and at the same time it brings a lot of frustration, and the relationship is never really able to make anybody happy. In the short story "Pool" from 2009, we here about a young couple named Darla and Jon, who is at pool party at their friends' house named Mandy and Trevor. The day before Darla and Jon had a accident in bed and out of fear they went to the pharmacy to get a morning-after pill. Even though they chose not to talk about it, the whole episode affects Darla's experience of their visit at Mandy and Trevor's. Darla is acting irritated at Jon, and it seems like Jon doesn't take the accident yesterday seriously. Darla finds out the two couples live totally different lifestyles and that she would have a tough time living like Mandy, only focusing on being a mommy. The others in the pool try hard to get Darla in there with them, but she uses the excuse that she hasn't brought any swimsuit. At last she's borrowing a swimsuit from Mandy. Here Trevor tells Darla that he knows about the morning-after pill and he makes approach to Darla. They talk about his marriage and that it's not all love and harmony, and afterwards Darla takes...

Ben Kibler, MD Introduction In the last two decades, physical training and competitive opportunities have increased dramatically in junior, collegiate and professional tennis. This arose due to a multitude of factors, but much of it has stemmed from an increase in knowledge and understanding of scientifically based training programs focused on improving performance. As this focus on performance has increased, the area of recovery has received relatively limited focus. Recovery is a multi-faceted paradigm focusing on recovery from training—session to session, day to day and week to week. Recovery is also vitally important during training as well as in competition between matches and between days during multi-day tournaments. As more information is needed in the area of tennis specific recovery, the Sport Science Committee of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) sponsored an extensive evidence-based...

Saylor URL: http://www.saylor.org/books Saylor.org 1 Preface Competing books are focused on the academic part of HRM, which is necessary in a university or college setting. However, the goal with this book is not only to provide the necessary academic background information but also to present the material with a practitioner’s focus on both large and small businesses. While the writing style is clear and focused, we don’t feel jargon and ten-dollar words are necessary to making a good textbook. Clear and concise language makes the book interesting and understandable (not to mention more fun to read) to the future HRM professional and manager alike. It is highly likely that anyone in business will have to take on an HRM role at some point in their careers. For example, should you decide to start your own business, many of the topics discussed will apply to your business. This is the goal of this book; it is useful enough for the HRM professional, but the information presented is also applicable to managers, supervisors, and entrepreneurs. Besides these differences, other key differences include the following:   This book utilizes a technology focus and shows how HRM activities can be leveraged using technology. We have also included a chapter on communication and information...
