...Pool by Corey Campbell Under which circumstances do you know you are ready. Probably none, you have to take a risk and just do it. This is what the main character Darla faces in the short story ‘Pool’ by Corey Campbell, as she struggles through the day with a critical view on her current life situation. Throughout the plot, Darla reflects on her thoughts regarding her life, and moreover the advantages and disadvantages of each decision she will make. All this is caused by her fear of settling down and becoming a mother. Darla is the short story’s protagonist. She is the girlfriend of Jon and is a bit older than the couple Mandy and Trevor, who are hosting the pool party. Darla is fragile, insecure and has troubles coming out of her own little cage in various situations, such as not being willing to get into her swimsuit. She is capable of showing plenty of emotions and multidimensional feelings, which makes her a round character. Her not so confident way of dealing with life changes at the end of the story with a plot twist, giving her the feature of being a dynamic character. Her actions and way of seeing the presence give the impression of a contemporary life crisis. The crisis also seems to have had collided into Darla and Jon’s relationship. The relationship pretty much gets summed up by this one quote: “What she liked best about him, Darla had realized earlier in the car, was that it wasn’t going to last, so she didn’t have to care that much really.”(page +line)...

...Pool We grow up with all these expectations on how we should live our lives, how we should educate ourselves in a certain direction, and especially how our bodies should look. The female body in particularly is being held under the gun. Every day we see commercials or magazines with bone-skinny models dressed in nothing less than a bikini. These commercials stage the models to look like their life is the “perfect way of living” and of course that their bodies are the most desirable in the world. It gives a feeling that if you want to be someone or have any success in your life, then you need to become one of these models. This is undermining the self-confidence of many females who are not as skinny or “perfect” as these excessive desires. But is it at all necessary? Can it be that women really have to look like these abnormal photo shopped models, or do men actually in most cases find them attractive just the way they are? In the short story “Pool” written by Corey Campbell in 2009, we meet a young woman named Darla. She and her boyfriend Jon are at a pool party at their friends Trevor and Mandy’s house where the story takes place. Their house is located in the Valley in “ … a neighbourhood of small square houses”., where Trevor, Mandy and their little child live. The neighbourhood is described as the home of car thieves and people in their early twenties, who cannot afford to buy their own house. Already in the beginning the setting is described in many details. “She counted...

...Essay about the short story: Pool by Corey Campbell The short story “Pool” is about the couple Darla and Jon. The overarching theme in the story is: unhappiness in relationships, and failing marriages which both are very relevant to the society in which we live in. The author (Cory Campbell) is trying to shed some light on how it is being in an unhappy relationship. The main character Darla is a young woman, and even though we aren’t told her age, based on the quotes: “Darla herself, just older than the couple” and “now they were in year four”, I would conclude that the other couple are in their mid-twenties which I take to mean that she is in her late twenties. Darla doesn’t want kids, which is one of the minor themes in the short story. She isn’t very confident in her looks which we can conclude from this snippet of the text: “she hated others seeing her in her swimsuit”. Darla is in an unhappy relationship with Jon, which after their condom split is tenser than before. They have been a couple for just under a year, and Darla has recently realized that she isn’t happy in their relationship which we can see in this quote from the text: “what she liked best about him, Darla realized earlier in the car, was that it wasn’t going to last”. He is also pressuring her to do things she doesn’t want to do throughout the entire short story, for example when he is trying to get her to drink alcohol even though she isn’t allowed to drink, because of the morning-after pill that she...

...free essay on "Pool - Corey Campbell" from Anti Essays, your source for free research papers, essays, and term paper examples. Everyone is searching for happiness. But where do you actually find it. Nuclear family often seems to be the answer, but is it really true? Is it possible to love someone so much that you cannot sleep at night? Or are people just pretending? Is it at good idea, to just pull two things together and expect it is going to work? Corey Campbell tries in the short story “Pool” written 2009, to define happi-ness, love and pooling things together. Darla is the main character of the story. She might be a middle-aged woman, the text does not say directly, but she is maybe in the late thirties. “Darla herself, just older than the couple, had been pulled to the party by her boyfriend…”(p.1ll. 8-9). The couple Trevor and Mandy has been married four years and have a little baby girl together, the may be in their late twenties. Jon is Darla’s boyfriend they have been together for under a year. Darla is not happy in the relation-ship. She does not love Jon. “What she liked best about him, Darla had realized earlier in the car, was that it wasn’t going to last, so she didn’t have to care that much really” (p.1 ll. 12-13). It is obvious that she does not care about Jon. Jon on the other hand is willing to do a lot for Darla. One day earlier Darla and Jon were having sex, but the condom broke. Darla was afraid that she was pregnant. Right before the pool party she and...

...Analysis of Corey Campbell, “Pool”, a short story, 2009 The short story, Pool, is written in 2009 by the author, Corey Campbell. We follow our main character, Darla, who is in a relationship with a man by the name Jon. The story plays out at the house of Trevor and Mandy, who are married. Darla is a very humble woman. There are various scenarios to prove this. (Line 73) ”Sorry(...)I did not mean to disturb you”, (line 123) ”It’s OK, I can sit out”. There are many more. The night before, the condom split. The next morning they go out to get a morning-after pill (line 16, ”Their condom split the night before, so they'd spend the morning going to two different Rite Aids to get the morning-after pill”.) This shows that Darla does not wish to have a child. When Darla is offered a sip from Jon's beer, she refuses. The pill advices that she does not drink any alcohol. The package states the success rate is 99%, yet Darla does not take any risks. She tries to make fun of herself as a mother (line 80,”I'd be horrible at it. I would probably start drinking. I know I would (...) Just kidding”) because the idea of her becoming a mother is, maybe, not something she wants to consider. She seems to fear having a child. Having a child means that one must open up to the real world. One must develop as a human being. One must no longer be narrow-minded; in the sense that one cannot see beyond their own benefits in any given situation. (Line 158) ”It all changes with a kid”. Darla is...

...Pool "Pool" is a short story written by Corey Campbell in 2009, about the young woman Darla at a pool party. Darla is a woman, I suppose, in her twenties. Her appearance is not described, it has all been left to your imagination, but when she puts on the swimsuit, we hear that the gold rings meet her collarbones, and that it doesn't fit her, so her body must be fit. Her relationship to getting married and settle down is a bit tense."I'd be horrible at it. I'd probably start drinking. I know I would (..) I don't know how you do it" L. 80, p. 10 and l. 176, p. 12. Every time they talk about having kids and getting married, whether it's to Mandy or Trevor, the couple they are visiting, she gets a bit defensive, thinking it sounds impossible and especially in such a young age. Darla and her boyfriend had a accident with a broken condom, where they bought a morning-after pill. She was nearly being drawn into the universe that she takes so much distance from. Darla has made up her mind that having kids and getting married, isn't her thing, and she has many prejudice about it. Darla's boyfriend is Jon, they have been together just under a year. Darla and Jon's relationship seems good on the outside, but on the inside, Darla knows that the relationship won't last, which actually is the thing she likes the most about him. Jon touch her in a gentle way, and ask her if she is okay. This makes him look like a good partner, but he also pushes her to do things she doesn't want to,...

...Essay about "Pool" by Corey Campbell We've all tried to be in that kind of relationship which didn't really fitted us, growth us or made us happy. Where the relationship was going okay, but never really was enough. The insecurity in the relationship affects the persons in it, and truly gives a lower self-esteem. It makes the person insecure and at the same time it brings a lot of frustration, and the relationship is never really able to make anybody happy. In the short story "Pool" from 2009, we here about a young couple named Darla and Jon, who is at pool party at their friends' house named Mandy and Trevor. The day before Darla and Jon had a accident in bed and out of fear they went to the pharmacy to get a morning-after pill. Even though they chose not to talk about it, the whole episode affects Darla's experience of their visit at Mandy and Trevor's. Darla is acting irritated at Jon, and it seems like Jon doesn't take the accident yesterday seriously. Darla finds out the two couples live totally different lifestyles and that she would have a tough time living like Mandy, only focusing on being a mommy. The others in the pool try hard to get Darla in there with them, but she uses the excuse that she hasn't brought any swimsuit. At last she's borrowing a swimsuit from Mandy. Here Trevor tells Darla that he knows about the morning-after pill and he makes approach to Darla. They talk about his marriage and that it's not all love and harmony, and afterwards Darla takes...

...Pool by Corey Campbell There are different perceptions on what the good life is. In the short story there is two different perspectives of what the good life is. Just like the real word, are their different perspectives on what the good life are. We have the main character Darla, who doesn’t want to live the normally good life, she doesn’t think a man, a kid and a nice house can make her happy. She is in a relationship with a guy called Jon, but she doesn’t appreciate their relationship. On the other hand we have the couple Mandy and Trevor who are living the good life. They have each other, a baby girl and a nice house. But everything is not what it’s on the outside. Darla is a very shy person she does not feel like showing off her body at the pool party. “A little later she said, knowing that she wouldn’t, that she hated others seeing her in her swimsuit.” (P.2 L.60-62) She is a very indecisive person she does not quite know what she wants in life. She says she doesn’t want to have kids, but she has still thought about having kids. “I’d be horrible at it. I’d probably start drinking. I know I would.” (P.3 L.80) When she says this she appears as an insecure person, because she doesn’t know she can handle having a child. Darla has another vision of the good life and we see that when Darla and Trevor are trying to find the swimsuit for Darla. Darla asks Trevor about being married and then she says “Especially so young. I don’t know how anyone does it.” (P.5 L.177) That shows...

...Crime, Corruption and Cover-ups in the Chicago Police Department Anti-Corruption Report Number 7 January 17, 2013 Authored by: John Hagedorn Bart Kmiecik Dick Simpson Thomas J. Gradel Melissa Mouritsen Zmuda David Sterrett With Ivana Savic Justin Escamilla Magdalena Waluszko Dalibor Jurisic Tricia Chebat Published by University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Political Science 1 The Chicago Police Department has a legacy of both heroism and corruption. On the one hand, the department’s officers risk their lives on a daily basis to enforce the law, protect the public and preserve the peace. On the other hand, Chicago has a checkered history of police scandals and an embarrassingly long list of police officers who have crossed the line to engage in brutality, corruption and criminal activity. An analysis of five decades of news reports reveals that since 1960, a total of 295 Chicago Police officers have been convicted of serious crimes, such as drug dealing, beatings of civilians, destroying evidence, protecting mobsters, theft and murder. Moreover, the listing of police convicted of crimes undoubtedly underestimates the problem of corruption in the Chicago Police Department (CPD). The list does not include undetected and unreported illegal activity, serious misconduct resulting in internal disciplinary action, and officers who retire rather than face charges. Our analysis of police corruption in Chicago yields four major findings. First, corruption has long persisted...

Ben Kibler, MD Introduction In the last two decades, physical training and competitive opportunities have increased dramatically in junior, collegiate and professional tennis. This arose due to a multitude of factors, but much of it has stemmed from an increase in knowledge and understanding of scientifically based training programs focused on improving performance. As this focus on performance has increased, the area of recovery has received relatively limited focus. Recovery is a multi-faceted paradigm focusing on recovery from training—session to session, day to day and week to week. Recovery is also vitally important during training as well as in competition between matches and between days during multi-day tournaments. As more information is needed in the area of tennis specific recovery, the Sport Science Committee of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) sponsored an extensive evidence-based...
