...Corrections Trend Evaluation Carla Howard CJA 394 University of Phoenix Corrections have existed throughout society for many years and continued to change and evolve in the United States reflecting society’s values and ideals throughout the centuries. In the criminal justice system, corrections exist in more than one form. Not only do corrections refer to jails and prison systems but they also pertain to community-based programs, such as probation, parole, halfway houses, and treatment facilities. Past, present, and future trends in regard to the development and operation of institutional and community-based corrections vary between states but corrections have grown immensely since the early 1800s and have continued to expand over time. Corrections are adamant to continue to expand into the future because crime is not slowing down so there will remain a strong need for corrections throughout society. The subject of this paper pertains to research of past, present, and future trends in the development and operation of corrections. In some ways corrections are similar to the operation trends of two decades ago. In other ways the development of corrections has come far compared to corrections in the beginning. Other subjects of the paper include current and future issues for prisons and prison administrators and an explanation for why these issues overwhelm corrections. A last topic for discussion is the roles of alternate corrections as a developing trend. ...

...Correction Trends Evaluation Paper Angela Rosado CJA/394 Contemporary Issues and Future in Criminal Justice September 19, 2011 Christopher Manning Paper Correction Trends Evaluation The question at hand today is where and how is our correction system going to be in the future? But to understand and know how the future of our corrections will be, we must first understand the past and the present trends of corrections. In this paper I will discuss the past, present and future trends of corrections, I will analyze current and future issues facing prisons and prison administrators as well as the role/issues of alternate correction systems as a developing trend. Past Corrections In today’s society the jails and prison pretty much function in the same ways. The history of the State prisons began at the Walnut Street Jail in 1790, it was called the first American penitentiary located in Philadelphia, and the building had been operated as a city jail. Some of the same functions and principles were used in England, also these functions were used in the United States as early as the eighteenth century, in England during that time did very little when it came down to punishment. There was very little difference between the two correction systems in the United States, the punishment was significant, but it was very noticeable that the American’s corrections’ system difference in punishment, for example: the use of capital punishment. Therefore, when it came down to the death...

...Contemporary Issues and Futures in Criminal Justice CJA/394 The paper will evaluate the past, present, and future trends that have had a profound affect in the development and operation of institutional and community-based corrections. The need of prisons and prison administrators is most important in the criminal justice system therefore, the paper will identify the current and future issues today. In addition the paper will evaluate the corrections system as a developing trend pertaining to the issues and the role of alternative corrections. Development and Operations of Institutional Corrections In prior years the development of institutional corrections left nothing to the imagination. The perspective of development and operations of institutional corrections is one fact that the facilities’ inmates were housed in the conditions were dark and fifthly. Inmates were treated harshly, and worked extremely hard. Today the development and operations of institutional corrections play a part where constitutional rights are in affect. Inmates today although the prison systems are overcrowded they are with constitutional rights. One constitutional right an inmate is entitled to today is health care. The prison system today functions differently. Rules and regulations are enforced but not by the hands of the facility but by the law. Facilities today although overcrowded are no longer dark, and fifthly. Inmates have three meals a day, shower access...

...DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS OREGON AMBER L. SMITH BUS-PS 200A M. NELS JOHNSON WARNER PACIFIC COLLEGE JANRUARY 26, 2013 Abstract In this paper I will examine the structure and functionality of the Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC). I will explain what ODOC is and what they do. We will also explore the pros and cons of some of the current policies and how those policies could be improved upon. NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR: I chose this government agency because it is of great interest to me. I simply chose this agency instead of an agency that has to do with my employment due to the fact that I am unemployed. Thank you. Keywords: DOC, Department of Corrections, corrections, agency, correctional institutions, governing agency, criminal justice policy, etc. DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS OREGON The Oregon Department of Corrections is a state agency that handles the states’ adult corrections affairs. The ODOC is responsible for the management and administration of all adult correctional institutions and other functions related to state programs for adult corrections. There are seven major divisions within the agency as well as a strong relationship with Oregon Corrections Enterprises, a semi-independent state agency. ...Administrator Challenges Paper Eric A. Carter CJA/454 Instructor: Ryn Fenner Corrections is believed by many people that work in its field of correctional officers to be the most challenging and frustrating component of criminal justice. There is the challenge of managing the inmates daily as well as the frustrations of inevitable mismanagement at attempting to accomplish multiple goals. New challenges present themselves every day. In a very real sense, employees in a correctional system are doing time the same as the inmates are doing time. It's easy to conduct a trial and sentence somebody (Alighieri, 2004). What corrections find more difficult is what to do with these inmates after they have been sentenced for five, ten and life in prison. Much of corrections is completed is a big range because of its endless amount of prisoners that are sentenced to prison each day. An issue that also occurs in corrections is the cost of operating a correctional facility. To operate a prison each year it can cost approximately thirty billion dollars. This includes correctional officer workers, administrations that work in the correctional facility. Housing, feeding, and clothing an inmate can start from twenty thousand dollars a year and the number can grow to almost thirty thousand, all of the funds are provided from tax payers. Therefore with all of these numbers in place to pay workers and take care...

...Corrections Trend Evaluation Tomas Gonzalez CJA / 394 February 4, 2014 Alfredo Cooke Corrections Trend Evaluation In this paper I will evaluate the past, present and future trends pertaining to the development and operation of institutional and community based correction. As part of the evaluation I will identify and analyze current and future issues facing prisons and prison administrators today. I will also identify and analyze the role/issue of alternate correction systems as a developing trend. Trends within the criminal justice system continue to influence the development and operations of institutions and community-based corrections. As mandatory sentencing laws can cause an increase in prison population, prison administrators face a daunting task in addressing the issues that overpopulation causes. “Apart from the highest priority of addressing prison population growth, prison managers are often confronted with an array of issues relating to imprisonment practices and their consequences” (Greenfeld, Beck, & Gillard, 1996, p.9). Development and Operations of Institutions The development and operations of institutions appears to operate around two opposing philosophies if punishment versus rehabilitation. The evolution of the development of corrections past, present and future has seen many changes throughout the inception of prisons. In the past the trends for prisons were solitary confinement with little concern for the rehabilitation of inmates. The well-being...

...Corrections Accreditation and Privatization Corrections Accreditation and Privatization Correctional facilities, today, operate on standards that would be unheard of in the past. The jails and prison of the past lacked a certain sense of humanity and an ability to show society that the prison was a place of reformation rather than condemnation. The standards for which correctional facilities follow come from the Commission on Accreditation in Corrects (CAC). The CAC developed the standards followed in today’s prisons. Accreditation officially began in 1978, jointly administered by the CAC and the American Correctional Association. What is corrections accreditation? The accreditation program offers public and private organizations performing correctional functions the opportunity to evaluate their operations against national standards, to remedy deficiencies, and to upgrade the quality of correctional programs and services (Foster, 2006). Benefits from the accreditation process are the following: improved management; defense against lawsuits through documentation and the demonstration of a “good faith” effort to improve conditions of confinement; increased accountability and enhanced public credibility for administrative and line staff; a safe and more humane environment for personnel and offenders; and establishment of measurable criteria for upgrading programs, personnel, and physical plant on a continuing basis (Foster, 2006). Professional development in the corrections...

...Corrections Accreditation and Privatization Carl Aguilar CJS/230 November 25, 2012 Lester G. Julian Corrections Accreditation and Privatization Correctional accreditation is a program that gives public and private organizations the ability to evaluate their operation against national standards provided by the American Correctional Association. By prisons getting their accreditation through the American Correctional Association will help fix any deficiencies that might arise during the day to day operations, by giving the correction officer and prison officials the proper training that is required to perform his or her job on day to day bases, will reduce conflicts that might arise with the inmates and the prison guards (Foster, 2006). By state and federal prisons obtaining their accreditation and keeping their accreditations prisons can affectively keep their corrections officers up to date on current policies and procedures that are changing all the time. Corrections officers that are properly trained are more inclined to treat inmates in a favorable manner and this will reduce the tension against prison inmates which will result in a lower tension atmosphere in the prison (Foster, 2006). Industry officials can improve correctional professionalization and accreditation by offering continued education and training, on current training, policy, and procedures. With current training corrections officers will be more adept to deal with any situation that may arise in the...

...Criminal Justice Trends Paper Dwight Blackshire September 9, 2013 CJA/484 Mr. James Herring Criminal Justice Trends Paper New philosophies to aid in the future progress of corrections are being developed as a result of past and current trends. The issues and concerns surrounding the corrections component of the criminal justice system are overcrowded prisons and their decreasing budget. If these issues and concerns are not address, they will continue to affect the effectiveness and future operations of corrections. Restorative and community justice programs are options being considered for the future of corrections as administrators, legislators, and activists debate philosophies to address these issues and concerns resulting from past and current trends. In the past, the national political climate favored the “get tough” approach against crime. It was believed that treatment programs could not reduce recidivism. Furthermore, it was also believed to keep the national crime rate low and protect the public, offenders of crime must be punished to deter crime. As a result, reforms such as truth-in-sentencing and three-strike legislation were implemented into the law. These...

...Community Corrections Paper Every day, all across America, prisons are facing an overcrowding problem. The prisons are receiving more inmates than they can handle. Once in jail or prison an inmate can be released or given parole. When arrested you can be sent to jail or prison or you can be given probation. This leaves us to wonder, what happen between prison and probation. Over the past thirty years, other sanctions have been used to fill the gap between prison and probation; this has led to an expansion of many formal community corrections (Foster, 2006). Community corrections are sanctions that are imposed on inmates that occur in a community setting outside of prison or jails. They are usually enforced by the court or agencies that have legal authority over the inmate. These programs are usually operated by probation agencies and parole agencies (Crime solutions, 2014). So how does these programs affect the community and do they really work? Thinking about having a bunch of criminal set free to serve under community supervision is kind of scary. Many people believe that they should stay in prison under lock and key, and not set free in the community. I believe that community corrections can affect the society in both positive and negative ways. The only negative is that if they let out an inmate and they reoffend. A positive is that, it can save the community money because it is cheaper to have them be free than to have to pay to keep them in prison. Secondly...

...Throughout this paper I will discuss the history of punishment and how prisons were developed. The impact and involvement of prison labor overtime and the Pennsylvania and Auburn system. History of Punishment Penology the study of punishment evolved in the 1950s. During this rehabilitation replaced the punishment of offenders and became the main objective. Also during this time the term penology was replaced by the term corrections. Corrections is defined as the supervision and monitoring of offenders, the secure holdings of inmates in prisons, and the treatment of problems such as drug addiction, mental illness and other services (Seiter, 2014, “Chapter 1, The History of Crimes and Corrections, What is Corrections?”). In the eighteen century an Italian theorist founded the classical school of criminology. His first theory of crime causation was linked to appropriate punishments. “Beccaria suggested that the purpose of punishment is utility or the prevention of crime. Included in his principles are that crime is an injury to society, that prevention is more important than punishment, that the accused have the right to speedy trials and humane treatment, that there should be no secret accusations or torture, that certainty and swiftness of punishment (more than severity) best deter crime, and that imprisonment should be more wisely used as a punishment” (Seiter, 2014, “Chapter 1, The History of Crimes and Corrections, Theories of Crime and...

...community corrections in the criminal justice system is a very broad a difficult topic to cover fully. It is best to start by examining what community corrections actually is. The National Institute of Justice defines it as programs that oversee offenders outside of jail or prison, and are administered by agencies or courts with the legal authority to enforce sanctions. It includes probation – correctional supervision within the community rather than jail or prison – and parole – a period of conditional, supervised release from prison. However, other types of community corrections, like electric monitoring programs, day report programs, and halfway houses are also coming into effect. These other programs can be a part of probation or even stand alone programs. Probation is one of the largest community corrections, it is a court-ordered period of conditional supervision in the community. In some cases, probation can be a combined sentence of incarceration followed by a period of community supervision. People who violate probation are usually sent to prison (they go through another court date, and the judge decides whether they have to go to prison or a more serious community corrections program). Once set to prison, the person is now an inmate; however, if the inmate is behaving well in prison, they can go before a parole board and be released from prison to serve the remainder of their time on parole. Parole is different from probation. Parole is release from prison under...

...Beeler 8/27/14 Community corrections watch over people who work for the criminal justice system but who are not in prison or jail. Our poor economy has affected our society in ways the prison system has not been spared from what is a system wide budget cuts and closings (Vera2013). In the last 30 years that community corrections have become a substantial part of the correctional system. In recent years, the push for alternatives to incarceration has, in large part, been in response to rapidly increasing prison populations in Canada and the United States (M.R 2012). Legislators in Canada and the United States have passed legislation in recent years aimed at reducing or stabilizing prison populations (J.H 2012). Several issues with the community corrections are low savings, prison overcrowding and biasness. Most community correctional programs emphasize that the use of community alternatives is not as costly as traditional incarceration, while adversaries argue that community programs end up costing more than traditional incarceration. There’s not enough teamwork among corrections departments, and administrators have become more isolated in tight times because they fear sharing resources. One of the biggest issues facing community corrections is all corrections departments partner up and share a little bit; they would make better decisions as a group. Federal prisons, state prisons and local community corrections departments need to foster partnerships...
