Corruption in India

...CORRUPTION IN INDIA “Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts... perhaps the fear of a loss of power.” ― John Steinbeck Corruption in the Indian society has prevailed since time immemorial in one form or the other yet not as damaging and serious as it is now. The basic inception of corruption started with politicians who have done great damage to our nation. Corruption in India seems to be occurring on daily basis and almost seems to have become a respectable thing here as most respectable people do it. It exists in India because of the connection between bureaucrats, politicians and criminals. Earlier bribes etc. were paid to get wrong things done but now it’s the reverse too, you need to pay a bribe to get right things done! Such is the condition of the once glorious nation. Now-a-days corruption can be seen everywhere. It is like cancer in public life, which has not become so rampant and perpetuated overnight, but in course of time. A country where leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Lai Bahadur Shastri and Kamraj have taken birth and led a value-based is now facing the problem of corruption. The basis of all corruption starts from the nature of humans. People in general crave luxuries and comforts and are ready to go through numerous unscrupulous means to obtain all their materialistic desires. They may outwardly talk about morality and value based life yet their inner voice says different. In the modern society a man who possesses the right principle is hardly recognized...

Corruption in India

...Corruption is today a world-wide phenomenon. In our own country some people in high positions lave been charged for it. A corrupt person is termed immoral, dishonest and unscrupulous in his dealings. His disregard for honesty, righteousness and truth results in his alienation from society. He is treated with contempt. But as erosion of values leads to decadence, remedies for the social malaise remain elusive, and so no amount of contempt can eradicate corruption which is a symptom of decadence. Corruption is the most virulent when crises everywhere threaten the very existence of the society and the faith in life is shaken. It has always been there like tie leech, but when the system grows weaker and the boat flounders, it gets bolder and drains its victims of the last drops of their blood. The older the system the weaker it grows and fails to solve the riddles of life that grows more complex every day. So men lose faith in it and let it drift down. At this point corruption takes over and plunges the entire society. After Second World War the old system with all its values was left in a shambles. The crippling effects of the war, the recession and depression, and uncertainties in a faithless world of maimed and moribund encouraged cynicism in a section of the population. This section included the government officials dealing in essential commodities. They found the post-war conditions ideal for fishing in troubled waters and jetting richer. They formed a sort of vicious...

Police Corruption in India

...No. 4, December 2013, 228-234 Police Corruption in India ____________________________________________________________________ Ravikanth B. Lamani1 G. S. Venumadhava2 Abstract Police as a Law enforcing agency is an important institution of that social control which existed in some form or the other in all society in all ages. Police is an integral part of the present day society. A society in the present set up cannot live and progress without an effective, sincere and honest police force. The Indian police have its roots in the ancient period and the present day police are the outcome of an evolutionary process. The bad things which it has inherited from the old system include corruption among policemen today. Corruption exists in one form or the other in the police system. Corruption has infected every sphere of modern life. It has vitiated the moral values of the society and the police force cannot be an exception. In fact, corruption of police is not a new phenomenon, but the irony is that the issue has seldom been seized by the organization with a sense of seriousness. In this paper an attempt has been made to discuss the various aspects of police corruption in India. The author has tried to discuss the various factors responsible for police corruption and suggest some remedies to control the corruption among policemen. The main objective of the paper is to discuss the extent, causes and remedies of police corruption and explain the extent of distrust that...

...* * IS India Incredible or Is India Shining?? * From being the ‘Golden Bird’ to being tagged as a poor, under-developed nation, India has faced it all. But now the times are changing. Now even India is competing in the race to become a super power. And it seems to be a pretty achievable dream taking into consideration the tremendous amount of progress that India has made since the time of INDEPENDENCE when this country was left in shambles. India, as we all know, is the largest working democracy. After 63 years of Independence, we do not have to protest or arrange mass agitations to change the government; we just need to vote. So easy to do and yet seldom done. Approximately only 40% of the Indian people vote during the general elections. We give away our most fundamental right, the right to vote, without any rhyme or reason. We complain about the bad governance and then do nothing to change it. A bad government comes to power because of the good people who do not vote. For the protection of its citizens India has a huge army, the second largest in the world. But, the corrupt politicians take this as a sign of population growth, maybe. This is the only reason that can explain the frequently reported deaths of air force pilots due to problems in the aircrafts. And what do the politicians do? They keep on buying the second-hand fighter jets. Taking Indian economy in consideration, it has been steadily growing since liberalization. India is now competing in the world...

Corruption in Healthcare Services in India

...Health care services in India are facing different challenges from inadequate finance and poor management to inequity in terms of quality and access (Ramani-Mavalankar, 2006). However, corruption is that underlying problem, which if not tackled, would prevent from resolving all other kinds of difficulties (Potter, 2003). Therefore, in this essay I have endeavoured to understand the forms in which corruption is prevalent in Indian Healthcare Services. Along with this, I have also tried to suggest certain measures which would help tackle corruption. The former president of Medical Council of India, Mr.Ketan Desai has been charged with corruption both the times he has been elected for the post. Despite his removal in 2001 following the charges, he was re-elected by the Government of India in 2009 (Pandya 2009). Thereafter in 2011 Mr Desai was arrested by the CBI for accepting a highly culpable amount of bribe from two medical colleges seeking recognition. (Chauhan, 2011). Mr Desai justifies the definition of corruption by Transparency International, as the result of misused powers to benefit personally instead of doing public welfare (Vian, 2007). Moreover, this definition would be appropriate for the Government of India who elected a person with history of fraud to be the president of the central health governing body of the nation. Health sector, in any nation, is a vast network involving different participants at each stage ( Hussmann,2011). Therefore it becomes difficult...

Effect of Corruption in Asian Business

...Asia Essay Essay topic – What is corruption and how does corruption affect business in Asian contexts? Choosing two Asian countries examine and compare their anti corruption strategies. Corruption, a problematic issue within business practice throughout modern Asia. Two of Asia’s biggest players, India and China, both are nations of great contrast, a definite distinction between the wealthy upper class and poverty stricken lower class, with an arguably absent middle class. Both nations are rich in tradition and culture, another similarity; an underlying rift of corruption and bureaucracy which plagues the nations. The extent of corruption in India and china, both past and present, will be examined in the essay as to how it affects business within the countries and on a more global level, how this corruption affects its standing with foreign investors. As a result of this widespread corruption, there has been a heavy focus on anti corruption strategies in the areas over the past few decades. Corruption, on its most basic level, is described as “an act done with intent to give advantage inconsistent with official duty and the right of others” (CPIB: What is Corruption. 2012). In economic terms, corruption generally refers to the payment for goods or services, which is not due to the beneficiary. From a historical standpoint, India has an extensive past of corruption, but I will focus on the more recent history of corruption in India, in the period 1950-1980, the Indian...

The Dead Democracy

...Money, coercion, and power - the three things that rule the world's second largest nation with 1.1 billion people. Corruption in India runs so deep within the society that it can no longer be considered simply a problem with the society but instead a way of life that there is no escaping. This problem has grown to such a magnitude that the corruption is affecting the fundamental establishments of democracy. As Ben Doherty, a reporter for Guardian Australia and twice a Walkley award winner for his foreign reporting, states, “[India] instead of being of the people, for the people, by the people, has become a government of the corrupt, for the corrupt, by the corrupt.” The sad truth is that India, although once prided as the world’s largest democracy, can no longer retain that title as it has transformed into an oligarchy where the power lies in the hands of the rich and the corrupt. While a democracy must be driven by the people, it is not necessarily a good form of government. The definition of a democracy, according to Sean Connolly in his book Democracy, is a “government where the people have the power and… [that] works to benefit these people” (3). Essentially, he is saying that the government in a democracy is “of the people” and “by the people” so that the people have the power, and “for the people” so that the government actually works for the people and not for its own selfish interests. In addition, Connolly supports the definition that Winston Churchill put forth calling...

My Contribution in Curbing Corruption

No Business in India Gives Returns Like Politics in India

...No business in India gives returns like politics in India, said ADR. Obviously, politics has turned into very lucrative business in India. Does this augur good or bad for India, its economy and the markets, especially BRICs country? Explain your position. From the facts of the case, it can be clearly seen that politicians thrive in India irrespective of rising inflation and slowing economy. Emerging countries will account for a large chunk of the world’s growth. These countries promise new and unexplored markets to the world with their rising levels of consumption and cheap labor. However, markets such as India pose unique risks for the businesses and hence impact its economy. Business risks are provoked because of influence of government in transactions which are expected to be purely commercial in the developed countries. State plays a very important role in planning of its economy and if the resources are used by the politicians for their “business” then economy is bound to fall flat. Financial crises are attributed to misbehavior of some kind, greed, fraud and cronyism. As is widely known, political influence is very essential to start a business in India. This is a key concern for the Indian markets. Corruption has serious repercussions on India’s businesses and political environment. Every time a scandal occurs it damages the credibility of the government. The following are the implications of corruption on India’s economy and markets: Corruption reduces competition...

President, a day earlier to him, through the medium of Doordarshan said that there is no single remedy to fight against corruption. Well I live in an India where the two most supreme authorities in Indian Polity seem to have given up or are helpless on the issue of corruption.
