Bernard, Business Analysis and Valuation: Using Financial Statements, Text Only, Southwestern (United States), fourth edition, 2004 (Palepu). Background: Accounting is called the language of business for at least two reasons. First, accounting terms such as sales, revenues, profit, net income, costs, gross margin, expense, and capitalize are widely used in business. Any businessperson is expected to understand those terms. Second, managers rely on accounting to understand an organization’s economic condition at a point in time and its economic performance over a period of time. As a result, they use accounting information to communicate with others. Managerial Perspective on Financial Accounting will help you understand publicly available financial statements for publicly traded companies and financial statements prepared for internal use. It is also an introduction to financial statement analysis and valuation methods. The basic financial accounting methodology, double-entry bookkeeping, was first published in 1494. However, double-entry bookkeeping was first used in the 1100s to help merchants monitor economic performance of their trading ships in the Mediterranean. Since those rules are nearly identical to the ones we now use, it is safe to say that managers and others find accounting useful, even if the rules are far from perfect. To...

...Reflective Essay: What I Learned in Writing 101 Jason E. Mainor UMUC 02 March 2016 Reflective Essay: What I Learned in Writing 101 The fall of 2015 is when I first learned that I had to take Writing 101. I was pretty worried, throughout my time in school, I always struggled with my writing skills. Be that as it may, this class was exactly what I needed to build confidence in my writing. I have discovered many things during this class that I will carry with me while on my journey to obtaining a degree from UMUC. The three most important ones I will be taking away are the proper usage of verb tense throughout my essays, how to come up with and support my thesis, and finally being able to properly alter the tone of my paper effectively based on my audience. Growing up, grammar was never exactly my strongest forte. Throughout my time spent in school I always struggled with the basics of verbs and adjectives, sentence fragments and run-on sentences. Anything and everything with grammar was a hassle for me. For this reason, the fear of writing followed me into college. For example, while writing my initial essay I struggled from beginning to end to use the right verb tense. I was constantly going back and forth from past tense to present tense, and I never noticed it until the professor corrected me on it. Fortunately, when the time came around for my second essay, I was well aware of the issue and was able to use the proper verb tense. For example, I exchanged “am” for the...

...Adam Nyre Sociology 101 Assignment 1 Dating and Sex among College Students Dating and Sex should be seen as an intertwined idea in society, but in today’s world and in the college world specifically these two ideas have different meanings and are practiced at different times. In order to prove my point I will have to conduct an experiment in which I discover two variables, alcohol and co-ed dorms, and through these variables I hope to achieve a conclusion that sex and dating are two different concepts when it comes to college students. In the beginning of my experiment I would first select a group of individuals to study, who would be male and female college students ranging from the ages of freshman to sophomore. With this I would introduce my first variable, that seems to have a big effect on college students, and that would be the use of alcohol. When people become intoxicated there decision-making becomes impaired and they might wake up in the morning with regrets. Most people are warned about rape and need to be around people to look after them when they are drunk. This usually doesn’t happen with people who have a partner and are dating. In order to discover if this idea correlates with the topic I would conduct a survey of college students both male and female, freshman to seniors, and see what their experiences tell us. To conduct a survey, I would have people answer the questions of: Have you ever had sex with someone random while sober? Have you...

...study and take good notes. Some are actual studies completed by renowned universities and others are merely guides written by persons based off of their personal experience. The first source I selected “Taking Notes: 5 College Success Tips” was posted by Dennis G. Jerz as submitted to him by one his Technical Writing Students Vivinette K. Dietsche. In her paper, Dietsche outlines five basic principles that are beneficial when it comes to taking notes: go to class prepared, improve your listening skills, develop a note taking method that works for you, pay close attention to content and review and edit your notes. Going to class prepared can be as simple as ensuring you have all the supplies i.e., paper, binders and writing instruments necessary to complete assignments. Also covering the course material before showing up to class will give you a better idea what is going on in the day’s lesson plan. Improving your listening skills is crucial in understanding what is being taught. Dietsche talks about having what we called in the military a PMA or Positive Mental Attitude. If you start the class thinking negatively you will not be of the right mindset to actively listen to what the instructor is trying to teach you. This will cause you to miss pertinent information needed to complete assignments. The best way to take notes is the way that is most beneficial to you. What format do you understand the most? Starting each class...

...Assignment #1: Consensual Relationship Agreements in the Workplace Case Study BUS 520: Leadership and Organizational Management Submitted to: Dr. Thomas Schaefer, Strayer University Instructor Submitted by: Aythea L. Jackson 1. Argue for the use of Consensual Relationship Agreements (CRAs) in your current (or future) workplace. Most employers have realized that employees send a great deal of time within the week in the environment. Due to the time spent in close professional relationships, people learn of similar interests such as education, intellectual interests, common personal acquaintances, as well as shared workplace stresses, and/or pleasantries, therefore personal relationships often evolve. In a 2005 SHRM poll (Parks, 2006) 40 percent of employee acknowledge being involved in a workplace romance, yet only 12 percent of organizations have a formal or written workplace romance policy. (Shellenbarger, 2004) Employers often in past practices had an established policy or non-fraternization between employees. In at least two of my past employers I have had to sign a policy of non-fraternization. Now is it realistic to think a policy like that can be fully enforced? Relationships forged at work have led to people eating lunch together, attending church with one another or may even visit...
